Rosin-Embedded Poly(acrylic acid) Binder for Silicon/Graphite Negative Electrode
We propose the use
of a rosin-embedded poly(acrylic acid) binder,
PAA-Rosin, to improve the cycling performance of silicon/graphite
composites in lithium-ion batteries. Rosin, which is a natural product
derived from pine trees, is chemically bonded with a rigid PAA polymer,
which affords additional adhesion and elasticity of the PAA backbone,
resulting in an effective binder with optimal properties. The hybridization
of PAA-Rosin is achieved through an efficient one-step process, and
the chemical structures of the components are systematically confirmed.
In terms of the cycling performance, the cell based on PAA-Rosin shows
excellent specific capacity retention (65.2%) with superior utilization
of silicon/graphite composites even after 200 cycles. In addition,
the PAA-Rosin electrode exhibits excellent specific capacity as well
as remarkable capacity retention in bending tests. We demonstrate
that the remarkable electrochemical characteristics of PAA-Rosin can
be attributed to improved electrode uniformity, which results in the
electronic networks remaining intact and minimizes electrode fatigue
related to internal crack formation, delamination, and pulverization

Rosin-Modified Polyurethane Elastomers with Room-Temperature Self-Healing Ability, High Strength, and Recyclability Based on Oxime Dynamic Bonds
Rosin, with a rigid hydrogenated phenanthrene ring, is
a widely
available biomass, but its high-value utilization needs to be enhanced.
Inspired by sustainable development strategies, the design of polymer
elastomers with a room-temperature self-healing capability has been
a hot focus topic. However, designing elastomers that combine the
conflicting properties of high mechanical performance and room-temperature
self-healing is a significant challenge. The hydrogenated phenanthrene
ring of rosin provides a superior solution to this problem. In this
work, the polyurethane elastomer (BPU-X% AP) based
on rosin-hydrogenated phenanthrene ring structure, dynamic oxime,
and hydrogen bonding was reported. The BPU-X% AP
exhibits high tensile strength (37.8 MPa), and good toughness (126.9
MJ m–3). Due to the rosin structure that promotes
the movement of the elastomer chain segments, the elastomers have
fast room-temperature self-healing and recyclability. Benefiting from
their excellent mechanical strength and self-healing properties, BPU-X% AP as adhesives exhibits a strong lap shear strength
of 5.5 MPa, and they can be used as hot melt binders. Corresponding
to the cycling of the elastomer, the adhesive strength of BPU-10%
AP remains almost the same after three cycles of adhesion to the iron
and aluminum plates. This work provides a viable approach for the
preparation of high-performance biomodified polyurethanes
Pine Rosin as a Toxic Cannabis Extract Adulterant
Pine rosin (colophony) has been identified as a new adulterant in cannabis oil. Its inhalation toxicity poses a significant health concern to users. For example, pine rosin fumes are released during soldering, and have been cited as a causative agent of occupational asthma. Symptoms also include desquamation of bronchial epithelium, which has also been observed in EVALI patients. The sample analyzed herein was acquired from a cannabis industry source, also contains medium chain triglycerides and oleamide, the latter of which is a hypnotic that is commonly found in the synthetic marijuana product Spice, or K2. A combination of NMR and HPLC-ESIMS was used to unambiguously identify major pine rosin ingredients such as abietic and other resin acids. Comparison to commercial samples of pure pine rosin confirmed the assignment
How Does Rosin Affect Sound?
The effects of rosin properties on the bowed-string sound are frequently discussed among string players and luthiers. The following comments and questions are common: Rosin is rosin. Should I use different rosins for summer and winter? Does anyone actually have a method for quantitatively measuring the physical behavior of different rosins? What are the effects of hair scales and hair flexibility? In this article the author, who has been studying these effects over a number of years both as a professional player and as an acoustician, presents some of the underlying physical aspects relevant for further discussion. </jats:p
Amidations of Rosin with Isocyanates
Amidations of abietic acid and rosin with isocyanates, a novel approach to modify rosin, were invest, igated using three isocyanates, namely cyclohexyl isocyanate, phenyl isocyanate, and tollyl isocyanate. The experimental results demonstrate that abietic acid and rosin reacted with the three isocyanates at 100 to 150 ℃ for 1 to 5 h to produce rosin amides in yields of 90 to 100%. The reaction temperatures were much lower than 200 to 300 ℃ at which conventional modifications of rosin are carried out. The amidation of abietic acid with phenyl isocyanate in toluene proceeded much faster than that in acetone or dioxane. The addition of triethylamine or N-methylpiperidine as a catalyst greatly accelerated the amidation rates of abietic acid and rosin with phenyl isocyanate. Molten rosin could react, with phenyl isocyanate without using a solvent, which can shorten synthetic route of rosin amides, and reduce reaction times. The rosin amides prepared under these conditions were in light color, and suffered from little oxidation and decarboxylation

Old Rosin the Beau
[Verse 1]I live for the good of the nation, My sons are all growing low,I hope that my next generation,Will resemble Old Rosin the beau,I\u27ve travell\u27d this country all over,And now to the nest I will go,I know that good quarters await me,To welcome Old Rosin the beau.
[Verse 2]In the gay round of pleasure I\u27ve travell\u27d,Nor will I behind leave a foe,And when my companions are jovial,They will drink to Old Rosin the beau; But my life is drawn to a closing,And all will at last be so,So we\u27ll take a full bumper at parting,To the name of Old Rosin the beau.
[Verse 3]When I\u27m dead and laid on the counter,The people all making a show,Just sprinkle plain whiskey and water,On the corps of Old Rosin the beau,I\u27ll have to be buried I reckon,And the ladies will all want to know,And they\u27ll lift up the lid of my coffin,Saying, here lies Old Rosin the beau.
[Verse 4]Oh, when I am going to my grave,The children will all want to go. They\u27ll run to the doors and windows,Saying there goes Old Rosin the beau; Then pick me out six trusty fellows,And let them all stand in a row,And dig a big hole in the circle,And in it toss Old Rosin the beau.
[Verse 5]Then shape me out two little donocks,Place one at my head and my toe,And do not forget to put on it, The name of Old Rosin the beau; Then let those six trusty fellows,Oh let them all stand in a row,And rake down that great big round bottle,And drink to Old Rosin the beau
