The thesis titled Adolescent Architecture: Shifting Features of the Architectural Medium, Its Institutions, and Practitioners at the Turn of the 21st Century aims to investigate one of the ontological transformations undergone by the architectural discipline—its contexts, media, and purposes—as well as its agents, during the period from 1970 to the early 2000s in the Western context. It traces the development of a disciplinary discourse within architectural culture, one that—through formats such as museums, magazines, festivals, and universities— has shaped and redefined architectural discourse as a complex cultural phenomenon.
The gradual emergence of what this thesis defines as a cultural infrastructure dedicated to architecture serves both as an object of analysis and as a lens through which to examine the discipline’s engagement with the broader cultural industry. No longer solely focused on the realization of material services, architectural culture is examined as a methodology, a system of knowledge, and a form of entertainment. Through its hybridization with other disciplinary fields, it inherits not only procedures and topics but, above all, systems of production, communication, and economies.
By examining the historical, social, and communication technology conditions that facilitated this disciplinary expansion at the end of the 21st century, the thesis portrays the emergence of tools, platforms, and contexts – beginning with the exhibition format – through which

architecture began to be delivered and consumed, thus rewriting its goals, clients, and responsibilities. Methodologically, the thesis seeks to gather and critically reconstruct the historical precedents to the contemporary establishment of a practice-transforming cultural infrastructure dedicated to architecture – through an archival compost rather than a selection of case studies. This metamorphic tension and disciplinary indeterminacy is described in the thesis as adolescent. On one hand, it reflects the relentless search for diverse outputs within the architectural culture; on the other, it analyzes the interdependent relationships and subjectivities fostered by the proliferation of physical and digital disciplinary platforms.

Discovering High-Utility Itemsets at Multiple Abstraction Levels
High-Utility Itemset Mining (HUIM) is a relevant data mining task. The goal is to discover recurrent combinations of items characterized by high prot from transactional datasets. HUIM has a wide range of applications among which market basket analysis and service proling. Based on the observation that items can be clustered into domain-specic categories, a parallel research issue is generalized itemset mining. It entails generating correlations among data items at multiple abstraction levels. The extraction of multiple-level patterns affords new insights into the analyzed data from dierent viewpoints. This paper aims at discovering a novel pattern that combines the expressiveness of generalized and High-Utility itemsets. According to a user-defined taxonomy items are rst aggregated into semantically related categories. Then, a new type of pattern,namely the Generalized High-utility Itemset (GHUI), is extracted. It represents a combinations of items at different granularity levels characterized by high prot (utility). While protable combinations of item categories provide interesting high-level information, GHUIs at lower abstraction levels represent more specic correlationsamong protable items. A single-phase algorithm is proposed to efficiently discover utility itemsets at multiple abstraction levels. The experiments, which were performed on both real and synthetic data, demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Discovering air quality patterns in urban environments
Monitoring air quality is currently a critical issue in smart cities. Air pollution-related data are commonly acquired through sensors deployed throughout the city area. To analyze these data collections, data analytics algorithms should be combined with reporting tools for discovering critical conditions and informing citizens and municipality actors. This paper proposes a new data mining engine to discover air quality patterns from air pollution-related data. This class of patterns includes many established patterns proposed in the data mining literature. In this study, we focused on a specific type of patterns, namely the frequent weighted itemsets, to identify combinations of pollutants that are, on average, in a critical condition. Modeling correlations among air pollution-related data through generalized association rules
Today's citizens and city administrations have an increasing interest in monitoring the air quality in urban areas. Studying the causes of air pollution entails analyzing the correlations between heterogeneous data, among which pollutant concentrations, traffic flow measurements, and meteorological data. To this end, innovative data analytics solutions able to acquire, integrate, and analyze very large amounts of data are needed. This paper presents a new data mining system, named GEneralized Correlation analyzer of pOllution data (GECKO), to discover interesting and multiple-level correlations among a large variety of open air pollution-related data. Specifically, correlations among pollutant levels and traffic and climate conditions are discovered and analyzed at different abstraction levels. The knowledge extraction process is driven by a taxonomy to generalize low-level measurement values as the corresponding categories. To ease the manual inspection of the result, the extracted correlations are classified into few classes based on the semantics of underlying data. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
