[ENG] This doctoral dissertation has been presented in the form of thesis by publication. The present dissertation covers the contributions made by the author in the context of three astronomy-related projects, namely: the Euclid satellite, the AOLI (Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager) instrument for ground telescopes and the COELI (COvariancE of Lucky Images) algorithm for the post-processing of astronomical images. All the contributions have been made in the field of engineering, solving technological problems that will help the astronomers to achieve the specific scientific goals of each project. Euclid is a space mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) whose scientific objective is to map the geometry of the dark Universe. The author of this dissertation was involved in the design of the control unit of the infrared instrument on-board the satellite. Such involvement derived in the creation of a new line of research aimed to improve the reliability of digital circuits in space. The strategy that was followed to reach this objective was to optimize the implementation of the EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) codecs, a kind of very recurring element that is used to protect volatile memories from the hazardous radiation that exists in the space environment. AOLI is an instrument for ground telescopes that has been designed to image the skies with resolutions even finer that the ones that can be achieved from space telescopes with the absence of the turbulent atmosphere. In order to make this possible, AOLI combines two well-known high-resolution techniques that had never been specifically combined in an instrument before: Adaptive Optics (AO) and Lucky Imaging (LI). The author of this thesis has been in charge of the real-time control of the AO subsystem of AOLI, which involved the use of a novel wavefront sensor that had not been used before in an astronomical application. The last of the contributions, named COELI, is also related to high-angular resolution astronomy, but following a post-processing approach. This new algorithm takes advantage of the statistical properties of atmospheric distortion so as to avoid any residual halo in the resulting images, as opposed to what would happen with conventional Lucky Imaging. The results of the executed tests prove that this newer technique provides enhanced contrast capabilities for detecting faint objects very close to a host star.

The impending population ageing and the definition of the accidents as the 6th leading cause of morbimortality have been the main motivation for this research entitled: “Accident risk factors for older adults with everyday activities who are patients at C.S. Conde de la Vega Baja. Lima - 2008”. The objective is to identify all the risk factors that could affect this older adults group. Regarding the type, level and method, this is a quantitative, applied and cross-sectional descriptive study. The author used an intentional non-probability sampling to calculate the sample size which was 63 older people. The data collection tool and technique consisted of surveys and interviews conducted at the same time, from November to December 2008.
Firstly, the author used the Katz Index and the Lawton-Brody Scale, two internationally validated instruments, to assess functional status of the total number of older adults (63) to perform both basic activities (BADL) and Instrumental activities (IADL) of daily living. According to the Katz Index, 38 (63.31%) are independent in rank A and 25 (39.68%) are independent in rank B. On the other hand, the Lawton-Brody Scale indicated 40 (63.45%) older adults as 8-point independent and 23 (36.50%) as 7-point independent because most of them are male older adults which do not perform one of the eight areas of function: cooking.
Based on the previous assessment, the research results showed the risk of having accidents is present in 54 (85.80%) out of 63 (100%) older adults. In addition, the 63 (100%) older adults run different types of risk especially at home: falls, burns and food poisoning risks were identified in 42 (66.50%), 25 (39.70%) and 23 (35.80%) cases respectively. This shows that some older adult people are susceptible to have more than one accident.Tesi

Measurements of B(Ds -> lvl) and fDs using data collected from the BaBar experiment
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This thesis presents measurements of the branching fractions B(Ds -> lvl) and measurements of the pseudoscalar decay constant, fDs , using all the data acquired at the BaBar detector at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which were collected
from September 1999 to April 2007, and comprised 531 fb-1. The following mea-
surements are made: B(Ds -> eve) = (6:11 +/-0:38 +/- 0:33) * 10-3, B(Ds -> tvt) =
(5:06 +/- 0:34 +/- 0:50) * 10-2 , and a limit B(Ds -> eve) < 1:46 * 10-4 is obtained. Using these measurements a value of fDs = 252 +/- 6 +/- 7 +/- 1MeV is obtained, where the first uncertainties account for the statistical limitations of the data, the second uncertainties account for the systematic uncertainties, and the third uncertainties account for uncertainties associated with other physical constants (dominated by the lifetime of
the Ds meson). This work is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Counci
ABSTRACT.
This essay briefly analyzes de philosophical and political production of Francisco Javier Conde in connection with the military uprsising of 1936, the political representation and, specially, the caudillaje. The intention is to report the author’s thought in the immediately following years of the Spanish Civil War, targeting the major internal inconsistencies and lack of historical rigor of his postulates.
The interest of analyzing this author so far in time lies in the importance that Conde ant other authors like Legaz Lacambra or Corts Grau had in the legal and philosophical legitimation of an totalitarian state that lasted nearly 40 years.

ijkey=6orgUM5fkIjedYn&keytype=refThe intracellular accumulation of organic compatible solutes functioning as osmoprotectants, such as polyols, is an important response mechanism of several plants to drought and salinity. In Olea europaea a mannitol transport system (OeMaT1) was previously characterised as a key player in plant response to salinity. In the present study, heterotrophic sink models, such as olive cell suspensions and fruit tissues, and source leaves were used for analytical, biochemical and molecular studies. The kinetic parameters of mannitol dehydrogenase (MTD) determined in mannitol-growing cells, at 25 °C and pH 9.0, were as follows: Km, 54.5 mM mannitol and Vmax, 0.47 μmol h-1 mg-1 protein. The corresponding cDNA was cloned and named OeMTD1. OeMTD1 expression was correlated with MTD activity, OeMaT1 expression and carrier-mediated mannitol transport, in mannitol- and sucrose-growing cells. Furthermore, sucrosegrowing cells displayed only residual OeMTD activity, even though high levels of OeMTD1 transcription were observed. There is evidence OeMTD is regulated at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. MTD activity and OeMTD1 expression were repressed after Na+, K+ and PEG treatments, both in mannitol- and sucrose-growing cells. In contrast, salt and drought significantly increased mannitol transport activity and OeMaT1 expression. Altogether, these studies support that olive tree copes with salinity and drought by coordinating mannitol transport with intracellular metabolism. This work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (research project ref.
