Flexible Processes in Project-Centered Learning

Berlin Heidelberg: Springer-VerlagProject-centred learning is increasingly used both in academia and in companies; universities train students to master complex tasks, often suggested by real-life situations, while companies train users to learn about new products, methods, technologies. This paper introduces a model-driven, extensible environ-ent, delivered on the Web, which is able to support long-distance collaboration of teams working on complex projects. The main merit of this proposal is the ability to self-organize processes, by using a simple Web interface and a library of activities and templates which cover most of the needs of this well-defined class of applications. This paradigm for dynamic workflow management is very general and can be applied to other application contexts, after understanding and modelling the relevant collaboration activities and templates
Joining the results of Heterogeneous Search Engines
In recent years, while search engines have become more and more powerful, several specialised search engines have been developed for different domains (e.g., geographic services, services dedicated to specific business sectors, library services, and so on). While such services beat generic search engines in their specific domain, they do not enable cross-references; therefore, they are of little use when queries require input from two or more of such services (e.g., vegetarian restaurants in the surroundings of San Francisco”).
In this paper, we study how to join heterogeneous search engines and get a unique answer that satisfies conjunctive queries, where each query can be routed to a specialised engine. The paper includes both the theoretical framework for stating such problem and the description of pragmatic solutions based on Web Services technology
ActiveXQBE: A Visual Paradigm for Triggers over XML Data
Abstract. While XQuery is becoming a standard, the W3C is currently discussing the features of an update language for XML, and its requirements. Therefore, time is ripe for designing and defining the language features and extensions that are usually needed when updates are supported: reaction policies to constraint violations, business rules, and more. In the past years, several languages have been proposed for updates as well as for triggers in XML, such as XUpdate and Active XQuery. In this paper, we propose a visual approach to the formulation of active rules building on XQBE, a graphical query language for XML data. Our approach is motivated by the need to provide unskilled users with the ability to express business rules in an intuitive fashion. Visual triggers are then translated into statements that can be interpreted by query engines
Providing Flexible Process Support to Project-Centered Learning
While business process definition is becoming more and more popular as an instrument for describing human activities, there is a growing need for software tools supporting business process abstractions to help users organize and monitor their desktop work. Tools are most effective when they embed some knowledge about the process, e.g., in terms of the typical activities required by the process, so that users can execute the activities without having to define them. Tools must be lightweight and flexible, so as to enable users to create or change the process as soon as there is a new need. In this article, we first describe an application-independent approach to flexible process support by discussing the abstractions required for modeling, creating, enacting, and modifying flexible processes. Then, we show our approach at work in the context of project-centered learning. In this application, learners are challenged to perform concrete tasks in order to master specific subjects; in doing so, they have to conduct significant projects and cope with realistic (or even real-life) working conditions and scenarios. Often, students are geographically dispersed or under severe timing constraints, because these activities intertwine with their normal university activity. As a result, they need communication technology in order to interact and workflow technology in order to organize their work. The developed platform provides a comprehensible, e-learning-specific set of activities and process templates, which can be combined through a simple Web interface into project-centered collaboration processes. We discuss how the general paradigm of flexible processes was adapted to the learning concept, implemented, and experienced by students

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2013.Com a intenção de delinear o modo pelo qual o escritor italiano Alessandro Baricco se inseriu no sistema literário brasileiro e os caminhos percorridos pelos seus livros traduzidos, esta dissertação dá voz às experiências tradutórias de seus tradutores. A inserção de Bariccono Brasil tem seu início em 1997, através de uma proposição da Profa. Dra. Roberta Barni à editora Iluminuras da tradução de Oceano Mare. A partir daí, outras sete obras foram publicadas no Brasil, sendo três delas traduzidas por Roberta Barni e as outras quatro por quatro tradutores diferentes. De um lado, considera-se o tradutor como figura principal namediação entre culturas, e, de outro, se analisa a realidade desta figuradentro do sistema literário, sua invisibilidade, seus limites e o exercíciode sua profissão. A pesquisa conta, ainda, com críticas e resenhas referentes ao autor italiano publicadas em jornais consagrados no Brasil, considerando estas como parte constituinte da imagem de Baricco refletida em território nacional. Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand,the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here
