    Bilateral Perichondritis of Pinna following piercing of Pinna - A case report

    Piercing of Helix of pinna is a social custom of certain communities in Northern Tamil Nadu. Such a “high helical” piercing is well known to cause Perichondritis of Pinna. Most of the times such a Perichondritis is unilateral. Here we present a case of Bilateral Perichondritis of pinna, following ear piercing, first time from India subcontinent. We also highlight some practical points on management of such cases.</p

    Mitochondrial DNA reveals genetic structuring of <i>Pinna nobilis</i> across the Mediterranean Sea

    Pinna nobilis is the largest endemic Mediterranean marine bivalve. During past centuries, various human activities have promoted the regression of its populations. As a consequence of stringent standards of protection, demographic expansions are currently reported in many sites. The aim of this study was to provide the first large broad-scale insight into the genetic variability of P. nobilis in the area that encompasses the western Mediterranean, Ionian Sea, and Adriatic Sea marine ecoregions. To accomplish this objective twenty-five populations from this area were surveyed using two mitochondrial DNA markers (COI and 16S). Our dataset was then merged with those obtained in other studies for the Aegean and Tunisian populations (eastern Mediterranean), and statistical analyses (Bayesian model-based clustering, median-joining network, AMOVA, mismatch distribution, Tajima’s and Fu’s neutrality tests and Bayesian skyline plots) were performed. The results revealed genetic divergence among three distinguishable areas: (1) western Mediterranean and Ionian Sea; (2) Adriatic Sea; and (3) Aegean Sea and Tunisian coastal areas. From a conservational point of view, populations from the three genetically divergent groups found may be considered as different management units

    Genetic diversity of the Ruditapes decussatus and evidence of its hybridization with the alien R. philippinarum in the Western Mediterranean Sea

    The introduction of alien species in marine ecosystems is often driven by the increasing demand of fishery resources. This is the case of the Manila clam (R. R. philippinarum), ), imported in Europe from Japan since the 1970s, to meet the growing demand for clams that the native species, the grooved carpet shell clam ( Ruditapes decussatus), ), could not satisfy. Alien species introduction could threaten the genetic diversity and integrity of the native clam, also causing hybridization (i.e., gene flow from one species into the gene pool of another). Since R. philippinarum recently spread in a few important Mediterranean coastal areas, a combined approach based on morphological characteristics, length differences of two nuclear species-specific markers (ITS2, 5SrDNA) and the sequence of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), was used to investigate the presence of hybrids in six Mediterranean wetlands (Sardinia, Italy). Eight individuals morphologically identified as R. decussatus were hybrids, having sequences specific to both R. decussatus and R. philippinarum in their nuclear DNA (ITS2 and 5SrDNA). Most of these individuals were found to be post-first generation (F1) hybrids indicating that F1-hybrids may be fertile. Secondly, to study the genetic diversity of R. decussatus in the Sardinian wetlands as well as in its whole distribution area, &gt;380 new COI sequences from the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea were analysed along with those available from public databases. Mitochondrial COI data revealed variable haplotype and nucleotide diversities in different areas, which were not dependent on sample sizes. The aquaculture breeding activities and clam transplantation between different countries, along with the long pelagic larval dispersal and the commercial import of other bivalve species might have promoted gene exchange between different sites and thus higher diversity levels in a few wild populations. Our research, evaluating the genetic makeup of wild and hatchery stocks and clarifying the degree of hybridization, can contribute to develop further recommendations for conserving the genetic integrity of R. decussatus.

    Design and R&D activities of TriPla-CA Consortium in support of ITER Tritium Plant development

    The design of ITER tritium processing systems should benefit from experimental data and process validation on experimental facilities that are ITER relevant. TriPla-CA, which is a consortium of four EU laboratories aiming to support tritium relevant activities for ITER design is carrying out R&D and design for ITER Tritium Plant. Several rigs and experimental facilities have been enhanced and developed in order to explore a wide range of envisaged scenarios of some ITER Tritium Plant systems such as water detritiation system (WDS), isotope separation system and highly tritiated water processing. Beside the experimental activities, the enhancement of the relevant software for simulation and design of various tritium processing systems is ongoing. The main achievements concerning the R&D, the mechanical design including the seismic calculations of some ITER WDS components and the main expertize and the hardware available inside the consortium are presented. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

    This work aims to provide information related to a small cross-section of daily life inside a Bronze Age settlement, using the context of the “Hut 18” of the nuragic village of Bruncu 'e S'Omu - Villa Verde (OR) as a model. The built-up area is a context of extreme interest and provides essential data relating to the daily life of the aforementioned period in this area of central-western Sardinia. The study, following a brief historical-geographical introduction of the territory in which the village is located, begins with the description of the general characteristics of the building and continues with the delineation of the stratigraphic sequence; we continue with a typological and chronological proposal of the finds and, finally, with the analyses carried out in the GIS environment, useful for better estimation of the dispersive trends of the materials

    Sympathetic neurohormonal correlates of linear and symbolic dynamics heart rate variability indexes in chronic heart failure

    The aim of this study was to assess whether in chronic heart failure patients (CHF) linear and nonlinear indexes of heart rate variability (HRV) are associated with the plasma level of norepinephrine, a measure of tonic sympathetic nervous activity. In 99 CHF patients with a 24-hour Holter recording and plasma norepinephrine assay, the absolute (LFP) and normalized (LF-nu) power in the low frequency band (LF, 0.04-0.15Hz), the percentage of 3 beats patterns with no variations (0VP) and with two unlike variations (2UVP) were computed. A significant negative association (Spearman correlation coefficient) was found between LFP and PNE (r=-0.45, p<0.0001) and between LF-nu and PNE (r=-0.26, p<0.01), while the association between both 0VP and 2UVP and PNE was largely nonsignificant (r=-0.07, p=0.47 and r=0.13, p=0.19). The finding that symbolic dynamics indexes were not associated with sympathetic neurohormonal activation, suggests that the physiological link of these variables is limited to the modulation of sympathetic outflow to the sinus node

    Estimation of Spectral Notches from Pinna Meshes: Insights from a Simple Computational Model

    While previous research on spatial sound perception investigated the physical mechanisms producing the most relevant elevation cues, how spectral notches are generated and related to the individual morphology of the human pinna is still a topic of debate. Correctly modeling these important elevation cues, and in particular the lowest frequency notches, is an essential step for individualizing Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs). In this paper we propose a simple computational model able to predict the center frequencies of pinna notches from ear meshes. We apply such a model to a highly controlled HRTF dataset built with the specific purpose of understanding the contribution of the pinna to the HRTF. Results show that the computational model is able to approximate the lowest frequency notch with improved accuracy with respect to other state-of-the-art methods. By contrast, the model fails to predict higher-order pinna notches correctly. The proposed approximation supplements understanding of the morphology involved in generating spectral notches in experimental HRTFs.Design Aesthetic
