Philip Mirowski, The Birth of the Business Cycle

    No full text
The Birth of the Business Cycle results from a 1979 PhD dissertation by Philip Mirowski, a “lumbering and unwieldy manuscript” (according to the 1985 preface by the author), first revised in 1980 and discretely published in 1985 by Garland Publishing. Since then it could be found in some libraries but certainly not everywhere. Thirty years passed and it is now available for a larger public. Yet, Routledge preferred to print it as a facsimile of the original edition, failing to correct the mis..

    Competition through Technical Progress

    No full text
The relationship between technical progress and price competition is a controversial issue in economics. This paper highlights the fact that investment in technical progress is an authentic type of competition which benefits the consumers rather than the industry. This type of competition exists when the potential for technical progress, which can be incorporated by firms through investment, is high enough. Competition is, in fact, made up of two components: A static one which is known as price or quantity competition and a dynamic one, the Technical Progress competition which also contribute to reduce prices and increase quantities for consumers. Consequently, the economic factors that increase a firm's margin do not have to be viewed as the consumers' enemy, but rather as an ally, under specific conditions, because they allow higher investments in new technology by which firms increase their capacities and attract higher demand from consumers. This paper also underlines that, for a mature market, the maximum Consumer Surplus as well as Social Welfare are attained by a constant level of combined competition which is only dependent on the size of the market and the number of firms. The level of combined competition can be defined as the product of the static and the dynamic level of competition. As a consequence, the higher the potential of technical progress is, the lower the level of static competition must be in order to reach the maximum level of Consumer Surplus and Social Welfare. --Investment,Competition,Technical Progress,Dynamic Competition

Birth and Early History of Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics

Since the 1980s, nonlinear dynamic modelling is becoming a popular methodology in economics. However, it is not as new as many researchers seem to believe. Before the linear approach dominated economic theory around the 1950s, many economists were actively involved in the development of nonlinear models, this tendency being particularly strong during the period 1930-1950. The main objective of this essay is to offer a systematic and comprehensive survey of the early developments in nonlinear dynamics in economics, ranging form Frisch’s original impulse and propagation model in 1933, to Goodwin’s formalisation of the limit cycle in 1951.modelos no lineales, ciclos económicos, macrodinámica, fluctuaciones endógenas/exógenas, historia del pensamiento 1930-1950, nonlinear modelling, economic cycles, macrodynamics, endogeneous/exogenous fluctuations, history of thought 1930-1950

    No full text
The article demonstrates that both the classical and the neoclassical theory of value are a transformation of conservation principles of the Physics of their time into Economics. Instead of basing value on nature, the author tries to emphasize a social theory of value that connects to early American institutionalism, which presents value as a contingent and socially constructed phenomenon

ONCE AGAIN ON LIMESTONES REINFORCED WITH A “STABLE SILICA” TECHNIQUE

Nos 3 — 4 of the 1981 edition of “Ochrona Zabytkow” (pp. 172—180) contained an article by Ryszard Mirowski entitled “Properties of Pinczow Limestone Reinforced with a “Stable Silica” Technique”. The article quoted results of studies on samples of limestone hardened by means of the method recommended by Zdzisław Bąkowski. As can be seen form the publication, results obtained were negative. Finding the preservation of stone monuments an important problem, the author of the present article decided to give a few comments to accomplish the above-mentioned paper. Dr Z. Bąkowski elaborated a method to preserve stone by employing “stable silica” to sandstone monuments. The first objects on which the method was applied came from Faras, i.e. the Nubia sandstone was the subject of preservation. Positive results were obtained. Then objects from magma rocks were presered and also in that case the technique gave good results. Of utmost significance are results of the studies published by R. Mirowski confirming the fact that multi-directional mineralogical- petrographic studies must be made prior to the conservation of carbonate objects, which would allow for the use of various preservation techniques. This procedure has been employed by Dr Z. Bąkowski with a great ssuccess in the recent years
