Formalisation and Implementation of the XACML Access Control Mechanism

    No full text
We propose a formal account of XACML, an OASIS standard adhering to the Policy Based Access Control model for the specifica- tion and enforcement of access control policies. To clarify all ambiguous and intricate aspects of XACML, we provide it with a more manageable alternative syntax and with a solid semantic ground. This lays the basis for developing tools and methodologies which allow software engineers to easily and precisely regulate access to resources using policies. To demonstrate feasibility and effectiveness of our approach, we provide a software tool, supporting the specification and evaluation of policies and access requests, whose implementation fully relies on our formal development

The age-related efficacy of dimethyl fumarate and natalizumab in the real-world management of multiple sclerosis

We investigated the comparative age-related efficacy of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) and natalizumab (NTZ) in clinical practice on multiple sclerosis (MS). Research in this area is lacking in the previous literature. In a three-year retrospective and clinical–paraclinical study, we compared 173 DMF patients and 94 NTZ patients with a similar average age (40 years) and disease duration (DD) (10 years). Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores were higher in the NTZ group than in the DMF group at 3.5 vs. 2.5, respectively (p = 0.001). However, in both groups, age values correlated with DD (r = 0.42; p < 0.001), EDSS (r = 0.52; p < 0.001) and age at onset (r = 0.18; p < 0.001). Furthermore, age-adjusted Kaplan–Meier curves showed that NTZ-treated subjects maintained a 1.0–3.0 EDSS status score (p = 0.003) more frequently and a 3.5–7.0 score (p = 0.022) significantly less frequently compared with DMF-treated subjects. The EDSS percentage mean difference between NTZ and DMF groups was 81.6%, decreasing inversely with age (r = −0.34; p < 0.001). Finally, high EDSS score values were reached at the age of 39–40 years, regardless of their experimental group. We demonstrated age as a major contributor in disability and response to therapy in current management of MS. Thus, age should be considered in the risk/benefit evaluation in decision making for the disease modifying treatments in MS

On a Formal and User-friendly Linguistic Approach to Access Control of Electronic Health Data

The importance of the exchange of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) between hospitals has been recognized by governments and institutions. Due to the sensitivity of data exchanged, only mature standards and implementations can be chosen to operate. This exchange process is of course under the control of the patient, who decides who has the rights to access her personal healthcare data and who has not, by giving her personal privacy consent. Patients’ privacy consent is regulated by local legislations, which can vary frequently from region to region. The technology implementing such privacy aspects must be highly adaptable, often resulting in complex security scenarios that cannot be easily managed by patients and software designers. To overcome such security problems, we advocate the use of a linguistic approach that relies on languages for expressing policies with solid mathematical foundations. Our approach bases on FACPL, a policy language we have intentionally designed by taking inspiration from OASIS XACML, the de-facto standard used in all projects covering secure EHRs transmission protected by patients’ privacy consent. FACPL can express policies similar to those expressible by XACML but, differently from XACML, it has an intuitive syntax, a formal semantics and easy to use software tools supporting policy development and enforcement. In this paper, we present the potentialities of our approach and outline ongoing work

KRAS Mutant Allele Specific Imbalance (MASI) assessment in routine samples of metastatic colorectal cancer patients

    No full text
AIMS: Patients with colorectal cancer harbouring KRAS mutations do not respond to antiepidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR) therapy. Community screening for KRAS mutation selects patients for treatment. When a KRAS mutation is identified by direct sequencing, mutant and wild type alleles are seen on the sequencing electropherograms. KRAS mutant allele-specific imbalance (MASI) occurs when the mutant allele peak is higher than the wild type one. The aims of this study were to verify the rate and tissue distribution of KRAS MASI as well as its clinical relevance. METHODS: A total of 437 sequencing electropherograms showing KRAS exon 2 mutation was reviewed and in 30 cases next generation sequencing (NGS) was also carried out. Five primary tumours were extensively laser capture microdissected to investigated KRAS MASI tissue spatial distribution. KRAS MASI influence on the overall survival was evaluated in 58 patients. In vitro response to anti-EGFR therapy in relation to different G13D KRAS MASI status was also evaluated. RESULTS: On the overall, KRAS MASI occurred in 58/436 cases (12.8%), being more frequently associated with G13D mutation (p=0.05) and having a heterogeneous tissue distribution. KRAS MASI detection by Sanger Sequencing and NGS showed 94% (28/30) concordance. The longer overall survival of KRAS MASI negative patients did not reach statistical significance (p=0.08). In cell line model G13D KRAS MASI conferred resistance to cetuximab treatment. CONCLUSIONS: KRAS MASI is a significant event in colorectal cancer, specifically associated with G13D mutation, and featuring a heterogeneous spatial distribution, that may have a role to predict the response to EGFR inhibitors. The foreseen implementation of NGS in community KRAS testing may help to define KRAS MASI prognostic and predictive significance

We aim to provide a critical review of the issue of labor relations as presented in the work of the Italian sociologist Domenico de Masi. Titled The World Is Still Young, the book addresses problems related to our current society and its constant and turbulent progress. Divided into ten chapters, the author, through the inquiries of journalist Maria Serena Palieri, discusses themes related to this problem and its perspectives for the future. Masi has made significant contributions through his works to our understanding of the context of work in the world and the world of work. Let us examine, through this author, what we can do to try to change this reality, based on an understanding and critique of this work, which we analyze through a sociological lens.Nuestro objetivo es ofrecer una revisión crítica de la problemática de las relaciones laborales tal como se presenta en la obra del sociólogo italiano Domenico de Masi. Potts models in the continuum. Uniqueness and exponential decay in the restricted ensembles

    No full text
In this paper we study a continuum version of the Potts model, where particles are points in R-d supercript stop, d >= 2, with a spin which may take S >= 3 possible values. Particles with different spins repel each other via a Kac pair potential of range gamma(-1), gamma > 0. In mean field, for any inverse temperature beta there is a value of the chemical potential lambda (beta) at which S+1 distinct phases coexist. We introduce a restricted ensemble for each mean field pure phase which is defined so that the empirical particles densities are close to the mean field values. Then, in the spirit of the Dobrushin-Shlosman theory (Dobrushin and Shlosman in J. Stat. Phys. 46(5-6):983-1014, 1987), we prove that while the Dobrushin high-temperatures uniqueness condition does not hold, yet a finite size condition is verified for gamma small enough which implies uniqueness and exponential decay of correlations. In a second paper (De Masi et al. in Coexistence of ordered and disordered phases in Potts models in the continuum, 2008), we will use such a result to implement the Pirogov-Sinai scheme proving coexistence of S+1 extremal DLR measures
