Infrared fibres in astronomical instrumentation
For several years multi-object spectroscopy systems have been available for carrying out survey work in the visible region, but until very recently there has not been a system for the near infrared region. This thesis describes the design, manufacture and commissioning of the first multi-object fibre system for near infrared spectroscopy. SMIRFS (Spectroscopic Multi-object Infrared Fibre System) is a prototype system that has been designed at the Department of Physics in Durham to couple the Cassegrain focus of the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT) to a cooled long slit infrared spectrograph (CGS4). Two different fibre bundles are available, each containing 14 fibres. One bundle is made from zirconium fluoride fibres, for K band spectroscopy and the second bundle is made from silica fibres, for J and H band spectroscopy. During the design process of SMIRFS a number of issues were addressed. These included; the characteristics of infrared fibres, in particular their throughput and FRD, atmospheric features in the near infra-red and suitable sky subtraction techniques, fibre preparation and evaluation, the use of microlenses for coupling slow focal ratio beams with fibres, and the thermal emissions from the warm material of the instrument. These, along with the design, manufacture and testing of the SMIRFS are described in detail, including the fibre evaluation results and estimates for throughput, instrument thermal background derived from the commissioning run data. Finally, there is a brief discussion on the development of infrared fibre system for astronomy

Measuring cosmic ray radio signals at the Pierre Auger Observatory
International audienceThe recent results of the LOPES and CODALEMA experiments open the door to a renewal of the radio technique for cosmic ray induced shower measurements. The demonstration has been done of its potential and performances at energies below 1018 eV, this upper limit being due to the small scale of the current experiments. A natural stage toward the improvement of the method is thus to install radio detectors in association with a large cosmic ray detector such as Auger. Besides surface and fluorescence detection, radio detection could be an alternative method, providing a complementary information. The Pierre Auger Collaboration has thus engaged a R&D effort which will lead to the installation of a radio engineering array covering 20 km2 on its southern site. Outline of the technique, results of the first phase of the tests and current plans for the future engineering array will be presented
A library of
A sample of 37 stars of luminosity classes I, III, V, including few
SMR stars observed in the H band with a medium resolution
(R=1500-2000) is presented. This sample of flux calibrated spectra is
intended to widen existing stellar libraries.
A new IR spectrograph, ISIS/IR, foreseen for CFHT has been used. Its
main characteristics are briefly described. Stellar spectra obtained
with this new spectrograph are compared to similar data obtained with
the ESO NTT IRSPEC spectrograph.
The behaviour of some prominent features is described and it is shown
that the COλ1.60/SiIλ1.60 line ratio is a good
luminosity indicator for stellar types later than K0
