Genome-wide meta-analysis identifies 11 new loci for anthropometric traits and provides insights into genetic architecture

    No full text
Approaches exploiting trait distribution extremes may be used to identify loci associated with common traits, but it is unknown whether these loci are generalizable to the broader population. In a genome-wide search for loci associated with the upper versus the lower 5th percentiles of body mass index, height and waist-to-hip ratio, as well as clinical classes of obesity, including up to 263,407 individuals of European ancestry, we identified 4 new loci (IGFBP4, H6PD, RSRC1 and PPP2R2A) influencing height detected in the distribution tails and 7 new loci (HNF4G, RPTOR, GNAT2, MRPS33P4, ADCY9, HS6ST3 and ZZZ3) for clinical classes of obesity. Further, we find a large overlap in genetic structure and the distribution of variants between traits based on extremes and the general population and little etiological heterogeneity between obesity subgroups

Michael Walzer's conception of social criticism. The debate between the liberals and the communitarians

    No full text
The autor aims to specify Michael Walzer's place in the discussion between the liberals and the communitarians in the first part of the work and then to define particular levels of the debate. This task of course reflects both secondary literature and Walzer's own understanding of his part in it. In the second part of the work the author tries to describe possible ways (three paths) of social criticism in the conception of Michael Walzer and deals with its features. The author claims that Walzer's concepton of social criticism suffers of inner inconsistency. Then the author tries to clarify the main critic's arguments and tries to find new ways of argumentation about social criticism. So as the author deals with hermeneutical interpretation and reflects its potential and limits (in the third part of the work). The fourth part of the work interprets Walzer's conception of social criticism with respect to cathegories of power, history and membership. One of the key concept in the grounds of Walzer's conception is concept of shared meanings. Then the author tries to point out some one-sidedness of Walzer's concept and deals with Walzer's conception of the tolerantion and criticism of foreing political communities

Basic Income and its possible implementation in the Czech Republic

    No full text
This diploma thesis deals with the concept of (unconditional) basic income as a policy instrument and the conditions, costs and possible consequences of its full or partial implementation in the Czech Republic. The first aim of the diploma thesis is to describe this concept, which is still rather unknow in the Czech Republic, and put it into the context of Public and Social Policy. The diploma thesis decribes its alternative models, which are - in certain extent - interchangeable with it as well as the praxis of the basic income in the world The author tries to identify the main problems within the system of today's social policy and with respect to them put forward the main reason for the implementation of the basic income in the Czech Republic. Finally, some models and ways of implementation are presented as well as the estimation of the costs and possible consequences of their implementation. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org

The Examination of One Form of the Atlantic Modernization's Moral Background

Ondřej Lánský The Examination of One Form of the Atlantic Modernization's Moral Background Abstract This thesis deals with critique of fundamental moral pattern of the Atlantic social space, that shapes some important features of social, political, and human action in the global era and endorses legitimacy of the reigning social order. The main task of this thesis is to show pathological moments of the contemporary development of global society through comparison of some constitutive features of Atlantic and Latin-American societies. The most important theoretical basis for this thesis is Axel Honneth's theory of recognition. As articulations of constitutive features of social normativity (ergo as expressions of shared social imaginaries of social configuration) are used chosen social philosophical concepts: John Rawls' liberalism and Enrique Dussel's philosophy of liberation. The thesis contains therefore four steps in three main chapters. Firstly the author sociologically analyzes the concept of social esteem in the context of theory of recognition. Secondly he examines John Rawls' normative theory of justice. Thirdly the author points some aspects of Rawls' theory, which allow certain interpretation and critique of the social esteem and of the liberal definition of moral legitimacy of the Atlantic..
