Globalization from top and below: (re)framing (brazilian) margins in two north-american documentaries
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010This dissertation analyzes the configuration of socioeconomic and national margins in two contemporary North-American documentaries entirely filmed in Brazil--Favela Rising (Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary, 2005) and Manda Bala (Jason Kohn, 2008). In an attempt to contribute to the research on the representation of Brazil in foreign films, the investigation draws upon concepts such as globalization (Appadurai, 1996; Jameson, 2003), identity (Min-ha, 1997), and difference (Appadurai, 1996; Bhabha, 1996) to approach the documentaries not as fixed representations of a given reality, but as cultural texts that might or not be articulated through the notion of nation. The hypothesis is that the analyzed documentaries are sites for the configuration of margins and, for that reason, are privileged instances to observe the constitution of identities and differences. The conclusion-reached through individual and comparative analyses-is that the documentaries present very distinct articulations of socioeconomic and national margins. On one hand, Manda Bala, through an argumentative and circular structure, reinforces socioeconomic identities circumscribed by a Brazilian national margin. Besides presenting a totalizing portrayal of Brazil, Manda Bala reproduces a colonial gaze that fixes Brazilian society as cannibal, and reinforces the dominant gaze that it seeks to criticize. On the other hand, Favela Rising, through a mainly narrative structure, moves the gaze of national proportions towards the favela of Vigário Geral, in Rio de Janeiro. Less than creating a micro-portrait of Brazil, Favela Rising suggests the existence of social formations beyond national margins, whose political strength exists in its refusal of the negative difference imposed by socioeconomic margins. Another conclusion is that the documentaries present, in an opposite and complementary manner, contradictory forces at play in globalization
Natural Variation of the Circadian Clock in Neurospora
Most living organisms on earth experience daily and expected changes from the rotation of the earth. For an organism, the ability to predict and prepare for incoming stresses or resources is a very important skill for survival. This cellular process of measuring daily time of the day is collectively called the circadian clock. Because of its fundamental role in survival in nature, there is a great interest in studying the natural variation of the circadian clock. However, characterizing the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation of circadian clocks remains a challenging task. In this chapter, we will summarize the progress in studying natural variation of the circadian clock in the successful eukaryotic model Neurospora, which led to discovering many design principles of the molecular mechanisms of the eukaryotic circadian clock. Despite the success of the system in revealing the molecular mechanisms of the circadian clock, Neurospora has not been utilized to extensively study natural variation. We will review the challenges that hindered the natural variation studies in Neurospora, and how they were overcome. We will also review the advantages of Neurospora for natural variation studies. Since Neurospora is the model fungal species for circadian study, it represents over 5 million species of fungi on earth. These fungi play important roles in ecosystems on earth, and as such Neurospora could serve as an important model for understanding the ecological role of natural variation in fungal circadian clocks.Advances in Genetics, Vol. 99

Jika tradisi mattula bala ini diperhadapkan dengan konsepsi kebudayaan islam, ditemukan sebuah titik singgung antara tradisi mattula bala tersebut dengan tugas dan tnaggung jawab kekhalifaan, yaitu mengabdi kepada ALlah SWT., penguatan tula' bala tersebut disebabkan karena masuknya Islam bagian dari hukum tatanan kemasyarakatan (syara') sehingga hampir dari semua ritual masyarakat Desa Umpungeng tersebut terwarnai dengan semangat pengabdian hanya kepada penguasa alam semesta
A Study on Bala Karappan
Fifty children with Bala karappan were diagnosed clinically for the trial as Out patient and Inpatient department for clinical dianosis, laboratory diagnosis and treatment of trial medicine.
The medicine chosen for clinical treatment and management of Bala Karappan was “Nannari ver ennai” both internal and external medicine.
Internal:
1. Age: 1-7 years - Dosage: 2.5 ml, 2 times/day -after diet,
2. Age: 8-12 years - Dosage: 5 ml, 2 times/day -after diet.
External:
As needed They were treated for 7 to 15 days depending upon the severity of the illness with further follow up for any recurrence.
The etiology and clinical features of Balakarappan may be correlated with Atopic Dermatitis.
Clinical features of Bala karappan was done on the basis of clinical features described in Balavagadam text.
More number of cases were admitted in koothir kalaam.
Various siddha aspects and modern aspects of examination of
Balakarappan were carried out and recorded in proforma.
Quetionnaires and case sheets, lab investigation reports were maintained separately for each patients.
Laboratory diagnosis was done by modern methods of examinations.
Out of the fifty cases, the signs and symptoms were releived in 72% of cases, Moderate improvement seen in 24% of cases, Mild improvement occurred in 4% of cases.
The observation made during the clinical study showed that the trial drug Nannari ver ennai was clinically effective.
During and after the course of treatment no relapsing effects were reported. Patients and their parents were educated about the do’s and don’ts during the course of treatment.
CONCLUSION:
All the fifty patients of BALAKARAPPAN treated with NANNARI
VER ENNAI exerted good prognosis.
Clinical cases found to have significant improvement in 72% of cases, moderate improvement was found in 24% and mild improvement was found in 4% of cases.
No adverse effects were noticed during the treatment period. The ingredients of Nannari ver ennai are plant origin mainly roots that are rich in phyto chemicals, easily available and harmless to children.
Since my trial drug is a single medicine which can be used both internally and externally and its also cost effective.
Hence, the medicine Nannari Ver ennai can be proved as an effective drug for the treatment of Bala Karappan
Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model
This article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. A simulation result shows a finding that is consistent with an analytical result for a state of equilibrium while it also shows different possible equilibria.Dynamics, Network, Game Theory, Model,Simulation, Equilibrium, Complexity
Upacara Gatik Tulak Bala Dalam Masyarakat Pakandangan Kabupaten Padang Pariaman (Bentuk, Fungsi dan Nilai Budaya)
Upacara Gatik Tulak Bala merupakan suatu tradisi yang berkembang di
masyarakat Nagari Pakandangan. Gatik bagi masyarakat Nagari Pakandangan adalah
pengucapan tahlil (Laillahaillallah), tulak berarti tolak, dan bala berarti musibah.
Upacara Gatik Tulak Bala pada dasarnya adalah tradisi dari ajaran agama Islam,
dimana tradisi ini bertujuan untuk meminta kepada Allah SWT agar lingkungan
sekitar terjaga dari wabah, musibah, bencana aJam dan gangguan syetan. Harapannya
adalah agar basil panen melimpah dan rasa persaudaraan mereka tetap terjalin satu
sama lainnya.
Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitataif dengan
menggunakan tiga tahap. (1) Metode pengumpulan data, data dikumpulkan dengan
tekhnik observasi, wawancara, studi kepustakan, pencatatan dan perekaman. (2)
Metode analisis data, data akan dianalisis yang diperoleh dari data primer dan data
skunder, data primer diperoleh melalui tahap pertunjukkan, observasi, wawancara,
pencatatan dan perekaman sedangkan data skunder diperoleh dari buku-buku, artikel,
dan makalah, baik media cetak dan dari internet, akan dianalisis dengan temuan R.
Wiliam Bascom terhadap fungsi folklore dan Hermenuitik yang dikemukakan oleh
Triatmoko yang kemudian ditemukan hasil berupa bentuk, fungsi dan nilai budaya.
(3) Metode pelaporan, data akan dilaporkan dalam bentuk skripsi
Sejalan itu R. Wiliam Bascom, fungsi upacara Gatik Tulak Bala adalah
sebagai sistem proyeksi (Projective Sistem), sebagal alat pengesahan pranata-pranata
dan lembaga-lembaga kebudayaan, sebagai alat pendidikan anak, sebagai alat
pemaksa dan pengawas agar norma-norma masyarakat akan dipatuhi oleh anggota
kolektifnya. Walaupun demikian terdapat juga fungsi lain dari upacara Gatik Tulak
Bala yaitu sebagai ungkapan spritual upacara Gatik Tulak Bala, dan sebagai hiburan.
Hasil analisis Hermenuitik terhadap upacara Gatik Tulak Bala adalah adanya nilai-
nilai budaya, yaitu (I) mufakat dalam perundingan, (2) tawakal dalam pembacaan
do'a, (3) ikhtiar dalam berarak, (4) pemantapan aqidah dalam pelafasan Adzan, (S)
kesempumaan dalam penutupan.
Meskipun Padang Pariaman daerah rantau Minangkabau, ia memiliki tradisi
dan nilai-nilai budaya yang begitu penting sebagai aset Minangkabau ke depan.
Upacara Gatik Tulak Bala adalah salah satunya. Upacara Gatik Tulak Bala sebagai
khasanah sosio-kultural Minangkabau, khususnya bagi masyarakat Nagari
Pakandangan adalah salah satu bentuk tradisi yang patut dipelihara

Herida de bala de aorta
The author presents the case of a 16-year old girl with a bullet wound in the abdominal aorta, operated under shock with two perfusions of rapid onset. Linen suture was performed and recuperation followed without sequella. This seems to be the first case published in Uruguay of survival of aortic wounds.Se relata una observación de herida de bala de aorta abdominal en una joven de 16 años, operada en colapso con dos venoclisis instaladas rápidamente. Binding of inorganic oxo-anions to cationic cobaltammine: Synthesis, characterization, X-ray structures determination and DFT calculations of [Co(NH3)(6)]Cl-2(ClO3), [Co(NH3)(6)]Br-2(ClO3) and [Co(NH3)(6)]Cl-2(IO3) ˖ 2(IO3)
Single crystals of [Co(NH3)(6)]Cl-2(ClO3) (1), [Co(NH3)(6)]Br-2(ClO3) (2) and [Co(NH3)(6)]Cl-2 (IO3) (.) H2O (3) suitable for X-ray structure determinations were obtained directly by reacting hexaamminecobalt(III) halide with appropriate metal halates in 1:1 molar ratio in hot aqueous medium. These hexaamminecobalt(III) complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic studies (e.g. UV/Visible and IR). Single crystal X-ray structure determination of title complex salts revealed the presence of discrete ions, i.e., cation [Co(NH3)(6)](3+) and mixed anions Cl- and ClO3- or Br- and ClO3 or Cl- and IO3- in the solid state. Crystal lattice is stabilized by electrostatic forces of attraction and hydrogen bonding interactions (N-H (...) O-, N-H (...) Cl- or N-H (...) Br-). The formation of definite salts of composition with halate ions suggests that [Co(NH3)(6)](3+) may be used as purely inorganic anion binding agent for these weakly coordinating oxo-anions. The DFT calculations have been carried out to calculate molecular volumes of the oxoanions and separation between two successive cation layers
Influence of Electroslag Weld Metal Composition on Hydrogen Cracking
The number of hydrogen cracks and their average length in welds are related to weld metal composition and microstructure BY R. THIBAU AND S. R. BALA ABSTRACT. The presence of hydrogen in electroslag weld metal is known to produce effects such as the micro-cracking in the weld metal along proeutectoid ferrite veins. The present work investigated the relationship of the atmospheric humidity, the diffusible hydrogen, the alloying elements, the microstructure, and the cracking behavior of the weld metal. The weld metal was obtained by butt-joining A36 plates using a consumable guide electroslag-single electrode process with Arcos BV flux. The composition of the weld metal was varied in the low alloy content ranges by welding with one of seven commercially available electrodes
