Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Muutosta tukevan organisaation vaikutus digitaalisten innovaatioiden diffuusioon mikroyrityksissä
Tutkimus on toteutettu toimintatutkimuksena, koska diffuusio, eli innovaatioiden leviäminen, voidaan nähdä sosiaalisena muutoksena. Digitalisation brings benefits to businesses, but its efficient utilization requires the adoption and spread of digital innovations. This research examines how an organization which supports change can contribute to the diffusion and adoption of digital innovations through micro-enterprises through workshops. Workshops have been designed based on innovation diffusion theory, UTAUT and UTAUT2 models and TAM and TAM2 models. The research has been carried out as an action research, as diffusion, i.e. the spread of novel innovations, can be seen as a social change. The research material was Digital Growth Path (Digipolku) Project Group's memos and the feedback survey and follow-up survey conducted for the participants in the workshops. The research results show that about a third of respondents in the survey have implemented some of the measures they planned in a workshop. The results support the use of opinion leaders as a catalyst for innovation diffusion, but a light approach to identifying opinion leaders is needed. By identifying the right opinion leaders, communication can also be enhanced. Communication is an integral part of the spread of innovations, but the challenge for change agents is that they use too technical language. The adoption of digital innovations could be promoted more efficiently if innovations are carefully chosen for these measures. Characteristics of the innovations, such as ease of use and compatibility, affect the spread of innovations. Companies took the most actions in the context of social media and this could be attributed to the characteristics of innovation. On the other hand, the introduction of more difficult digital innovations can promote the spread of innovations, as the first step in the innovation diffusion process is awareness. Action research findings can be utilized when planning measures to support the diffusion of innovation in micro-enterprises and the use of workshops to promote diffusion of innovations. The workshop can be used as such or it can be developed an extension model that takes into account the points raised in this research.unknown accessibilityei tietoa saavutettavuudest
Changing Perceptions of Tourism as a Respectable Career Choice for Omani Women
Tourism in Oman is projected to offer 500 000 new jobs by 2040, but the sector has challenges in attracting local employees, especially women. Tourism is widely not perceived as a respectable career choice for women in the society.
The aim of the thesis was to find solutions for how the perception of tourism can be influenced to assist in lowering the threshold for Oman Tourism College (OTC) female students to choose tourism as a career and how the OTC’s women in tourism network (Lady Leaders in Tourism Network) could be used best in the process. The qualitative research applied insider action research with focus group discussions and desk research as data collecting methods. The focus group discussions with OTC female students and the network participants were held in the 3rd annual event of the network in March 2017.
Awareness raising of tourism and careers in tourism and developing tourism education with the sector to be more practical were the main outcomes of the focus groups.
The network is proposed as a CSR program between OTC and the sector companies and stakeholders, aligning with three UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Gender Equality, Quality Education and Decent Work & Economic Growth. A change cycle through network activities is presented to increase the number of Omani women joining tourism education and starting a career in tourism, to the increase of the overall number of Omani women in tourism, to women being more empowered in tourism, in training and as entrepreneurs
Sosiaalinen tuki jaettiin taloudelliseen, tiedolliseen,
toiminnalliseen ja tunnetukeen.
Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan kvantitatiivinen kyselytutkimus ja kokonaistutkimus. Kohdejoukkona
olivat yli 60-vuotiasta omaistaan hoitavat omaishoitajat, jotka saivat rahallista omaishoidon
tukea. Lomakehaastattelut tehtiin touko-kesäkuussa 2012. Tutkimukseen osallistui
25 haastateltavaa. Kerätty aineisto käsiteltiin tilastollisesti. Avoimista kysymyksistä saadut
vastaukset kirjoitettiin suoraan tutkimukseen.
Suurin osa omaishoitajista koki taloudellisen tuen olevan riittämätöntä työn vaativuuteen,
sitovuuteen ja raskauteen nähden eikä rahallisen tuen koettu riittävän edes kaikkiin kuluihin.
Taloudellisen tuen toivottiin olevan verovapaata. Suurin osa omaishoitajista oli saanut
tiedollista tukea omasta mielestä riittävästi, mutta tulosten perusteella omaishoitajat tarvitsevat
lisää neuvontaa ja ohjausta taloudellisten tukien hakemiseen. Toiminnallisen tuen
osalta suurin osa omaishoitajista kokee käyttämänsä tukipalvelut riittäviksi. Kotiin annettavaa
apua olisi vielä mahdollista lisätä, sillä esimerkiksi kodinhoitopalveluja omaishoitajat
käyttävät vähän. Kaikki omaishoitajat olivat tietoisia omaishoitajalle kuuluvista vapaapäivistä
ja suurin osa heistä niitä käyttikin. Hyvin usein tai melko usein itsensä uupuneeksi tunsi
kaksi kolmasosaa omaishoitajista. Kehittämistä vaatii omaishoitajien vapaiden järjestämisen
vaihtoehtojen lisääminen ja omaishoidettavien hoitaminen omaishoitajille järjestettävien
tapahtumien ajaksi. Jatkotutkimusaiheena voitaisiin tutkia omaishoidon ulkopuolelle
jäävien omaishoitajien tuen tarpeita. The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis’ survey was to get new information on the need of support among the
family-informal care givers in Pielavesi. I found out what kind of support the caregivers are getting at the
moment, do they feel the amount of support to be adequate and what kinds of support and services they
would hope to have in the future to have the power to tend their relative at home as long as possible.
The survey was quantitative, an investigating study and a general study. I accomplished the interviews in
June 2012. I personally visited each informal care giver’s home and asked the questions of the questionnaire
orally from the informal care givers. The target group of the study were the informal care givers that
were tending their over 60-year-old family member. 25 interviewees took part of the study. The collected
material was processed statistically.
The results of the study suggest that the majority of the informal care givers considered the amount of financial
support to be inadequate due to the difficulty, validity and the gestation of their work. They also
stated that the informal care giver’s fee hadn’t been adequate for all their expenses. The received allowance
had also affected the managing of the informal care givers. The majority of the informal care givers
had received enough informational support when being active about the issue. With regards to functional
support, the majority of the informal caregivers felt that the support services they had been using were adequate.
According to the results of this survey, it would be possible to increase the help given at home because
informal care givers used for example housekeeping support services only a little.
All of the informal care givers were aware of the legal free days and the majority of them had taken advantage
of them. Two out of three informal care givers had been feeling exhausted very often/ quite often.
The help of the children or other family members was stated to have an effect on the emotional managing
of the informal care givers. The financial family informal care giving allowance was hoped to be larger and
also tax-exempt. Also, more free days were requested. According to this survey, there is a lot to develop in
the organization of the informal care givers’ free time and the tending of the cared-for person during the
organized event. The need of support of the informal caregivers’ outside of the care giving system could
be investigated as a subject of follow-up research
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
