Finding Josep Solanes: mobilizing the legacies of Republican exile in Spanish cultural studies
Using the example of Republican exile Josep Solanes, this article argues how the category of exile and the reality of the Republican exile of 1939 can be mobilized for a political questioning of the meanings of “Spanish” in twentieth-century Spanish culture as defining and framing disciplinary areas. Still a very little known author, the article reconstructs the disciplinary fields, historical conflicts, personal encounters, border and language crossings necessary to assess Solanes’ work, the conditions of his radical intervention in the field of psychiatry, first in Catalonia and later in France and Venezuela, and how they framed his conceptualization of the experience of exile. The last part of the article, through a consideration of Solanes’ explorations of the exilic as a post-national condition, reflects on what could be the political and ethical conditions to recuperate a legacy that resists being inscribed in, or identified with, the nation. In an important way, this article should be read as an introduction to the very little known Josep Solanes that lays out the importance of his work and signals its potential for further research on new directions in the study of exile

The privatization of public water utilities
Includes bibliographyLatin America has kept in step with the worldwide trend towards the privatization of public utilities. Its motivation for doing so stems from a number of factors: an economic philosophy, its quest for greater efficiency, macroeconomic situations, debt-equity swaps, decisions to bring private capital into the management of public utilities during times of economic crisis, and others. This article analyses the characteristics and components of public utilities, the differences existing between one utility and another (particularly in terms of their capital/revenue ratio);, the rigidity of supply and investment, the possibilities of giving consumers a choice, the concept of economies of scale and how it ties in with the notion of monopolies, and the legal implications of monopolistic systems. It also examines some aspects of the legal regulation of utilities, such as administrative controls, the idea of reasonable profit levels, control by holding companies, regulation and monitoring mechanisms, and terms and conditions of service, including some components of the relationship between water use and the management of water resources. Among the specific cases of utility privatizations which are reviewed, particular attention is devoted to the case of the United Kingdom, which is currently the subject of public debate; selected aspects of Spain's Public Administration Contracts bill are outlined as well. In conclusion, the author suggests that the countries of the region should take comparable legislation and the experience of other nations into account and should set up suitable regulatory and monitoring systems prior to privatization

Integral geometry and valuations
Valuations are finitely additive functionals on the space of convex bodies. Their study has become a central subject in convexity theory, with fundamental applications to integral geometry. In the last years there has been significant progress in the theory of valuations, which in turn has led to important achievements in integral geometry. This book originated from two courses delivered by the authors at the CRM and provides a self-contained introduction to these topics, covering most of the recent advances. The first part, by Semyon Alesker, is devoted to the theory of convex valuations, with emphasis on the latest developments. A special focus is put on the new fundamental structures of the space of valuations discovered after Alesker's irreducibility theorem. Moreover, the author describes the newly developed theory of valuations on manifolds. In the second part, Joseph H. G. Fu gives a modern introduction to integral geometry in the sense of Blaschke and Santaló, based on the notions and tools presented in the first part. At the core of this approach lies the close relationship between kinematic formulas and Alesker's product of valuations. This original viewpoint not only enlightens the classical integral geometry of Euclidean space, it has also produced previously unreachable results, such as the explicit computation of kinematic formulas in Hermitian spaces
To thirty years of the death of Franco and in a moment of extension of the "revisionisms" of diverse signs, but that have in common the little attention or ignorance of the nature of the dictatorship and of the real conditions of the process of political change in Spain in the second half of the seventies, the author propose a brief commemorative one of the setting of the dictatorship' end and the start of the democratic transition
The local universe in the era of large surveys. I. Spectral classification of S0 galaxies
This is the first paper in a series devoted to review the main properties of galaxies designated S0 in the Hubble classification system. Our aim is to gather abundant and, above all, robust information on the most relevant physical parameters of this poorly-understood morphological type and their possible dependence on the environment that could later be used to assess their possible formation channel(s). The adopted approach combines the characterisation of the fundamental features of the optical spectra of 68, 043 S0 with heliocentric z ≲ 0.1 with the exploration of a comprehensive set of their global attributes. A principal component analysis is used to reduce the huge number of dimensions of the spectral data to a low-dimensional space facilitating a bias-free machine-learning-based classification of the galaxies. This procedure has revealed that objects bearing the S0 designation consist, despite their similar morphology, of two separate sub-populations with statistically inconsistent physical properties. Compared to the absorption-dominated S0, those with significant nebular emission are, on average, somewhat less massive, more luminous with less concentrated light profiles, have a younger, bluer and metal-poorer stellar component, and avoid high-galaxy-density regions. Noteworthy is the fact that the majority of members of this latter class, which accounts for at least a quarter of the local S0 population, show star formation rates and spectral characteristics entirely similar to those seen in late spirals. Our findings suggest that star-forming S0 might be less rare than hitherto believed and raise the interesting possibility of identifying them with plausible progenitors of their quiescent counterparts.© 2020 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical SocietyThe authors thank the reviewer for his/her detailed, insightful and
