Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Die Bedeutung von MAGED2 für die Regulation von HIF-1α
Mutationen des MAGED2-Gens, welches für das gleichnamige Protein MAGED2 kodiert, verursachen bei Betroffenen das transiente antenatale Bartter-Syndrom, welches sich phänotypisch mit schwersten renalen Salzverlusten präsentiert, die zu massiver Polyurie und somit zum ausgeprägten Polyhydramnion führen. Die besondere Schwere dieser Erkrankung wird durch die hohe Frühgeburtlichkeitsrate und die hohe Mortalität deutlich. Im Unterschied zu den anderen Formen des Bartter-Syndroms zeigt diese Erkrankung einen transienten Charakter und die Symptome verschwinden einige Wochen nach der Geburt bzw. ab der 30. Schwangerschaftswoche. Der Zeitpunkt des Symptomendes überschneidet sich mit dem Zeitpunkt, ab dem HIF-1α, welches als Indikator für hypoxische Bedingungen gilt, nicht mehr in fetalen Nieren nachweisbar ist und somit von einem ausreichenden Sauerstoffangebot auszugehen ist. Es ist bekannt, dass MAGE-Proteine Zellen vor unterschiedlichen Stressoren schützen. Auf Basis dieses Wissens wurde folgende Hypothese zur Pathophysiologie des transienten antenatalen Bartter-Syndroms verfasst: MAGED2 ist für den Schutz und die Funktion der renalen Salztransportmechanismen unter hypoxischen Bedingungen essentiell. Die Beobachtungen, dass bei Mutationen von MAGED2 ein schnellerer Abbau von NKCC2 stattfindet und auch die Menge von NCC an der apikalen Tubulusmembran reduziert ist, unterstützen diese These. Der zugrundeliegende, detaillierte Pathomechanismus ist bisher nicht geklärt und die weitere Untersuchung Bestandteil dieser Arbeit. Aufgrund der Beobachtung, dass wt-MAGED2 mit Gαs interagiert, während diese Interaktion zwischen Gαs und mt-MAGED2 nicht nachweisbar ist, ist die Vermutung, dass diese Wechselwirkung wesentlich für die Adaptation der Zellen an hypoxische Bedingungen ist. Gαs wirkt stimulierend auf den cAMP/PKA-Signalweg, der wiederum für den Erhalt der Salztransportprozesse unter hypoxischen Bedingungen notwendig ist, da dieser unter anderem stabilisierend auf den Transkriptionsfaktor HIF-1α wirkt. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen bestätigten diese Annahme und machten eine reziproke Beeinflussung zwischen MAGED2, dem cAMP/PKA-Signalweg und HIF-1α deutlich, wobei Gαs als gemeinsame Schnittstelle agiert. Dabei kommt MAGED2 eine Schlüsselrolle zu, die insbesondere in Situationen, in denen die Zellen Hypoxie ausgesetzt sind, zum Tragen kommt. Durch die fehlende Interaktion von MAGED2 und Gαs bei Depletion bzw. Funktionsverlust von MAGED2 kommt es zur fehlregulierten Internalisierung von Gαs. Dies führt zu einer gestörten Aktivierung des cAMP/PKA-Signalwegs sowie einer unzureichenden Stabilisierung von HIF-1α. Um die Bedeutung des cAMP/PKA-Signalwegs und MAGED2 für die hypoxische Induktion von HIF-1α genauer zu untersuchen, wurde in weiteren Experimenten versucht, die beeinträchtigte HIF-1α-Induktion wiederherzustellen. Dabei kamen Isoproterenol und Forskolin zum Einsatz, wobei Ersteres upstream und Letzteres downstream von Gαs wirkt. Forskolin war in der Lage, die HIF-1α-Expression in den MAGED2-depletierten Zellen deutlich über die Kontrollwerte zu steigern, während die Exposition mit Isoproterenol keine erkennbare Wirkung zeigte. Um die beteiligte PKA-Isoform der beschriebenen Prozesse zu identifizieren, wurde der Einfluss zweier PKA-Inhibitoren untersucht. Die Ergebnisse machten deutlich, dass PKA-Isoform II an der Regulation von HIF-1α beteiligt ist. Interessanterweise konnte außerdem eine Erhöhung der MAGED2-mRNA und -Proteinexpression durch den Einfluss des cAMP-Mimetikums Forskolin unter Hypoxie beobachtet werden. Außerdem zeigte sich die Abhängigkeit der MAGED2-Proteinexpression von HIF-1α, was zusätzlich die Beobachtung der wechselseitigen Regulation von MAGED2 und HIF-1α unter hypoxischen Bedingungen unterstützt. Die dargestellten Ergebnisse erklären in Teilen die unzureichende Anpassung der MAGED2-depletierten Zellen an hypoxische Bedingungen.
Bei Patienten mit der transienten Form des antenatalen Bartter-Syndroms macht sich die unzureichende Anpassung an hypoxische Bedingungen anhand des Zusammenbruchs der Salztransportprozesse während der hypoxischen Phase in der Fetalperiode bemerkbar, was zumindest in Teilen eine Erklärung für den transienten Charakter ist. Auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse ist es denkbar, dass Betroffene im Verlauf ihres Lebens erneut Phasen erleben, in denen die Salztransportmechanismen aufgrund von Hypoxie, beispielsweise bei Aufenthalt in großen Höhen oder bei entzündlichen Prozessen, nicht aufrechterhalten werden können. Die Schwere des Phänotyps lässt sich vermutlich nicht allein auf Grundlage der oben dargestellten Mechanismen erklären und bedarf ebenso wie die Erforschung möglicher Therapieoptionen beispielweise mit Forskolin weitere Untersuchungen. Neben der bedeutenden Rolle von MAGED2 für die beschriebene Erkrankung sollte MAGED2 auch im Zusammenhang mit anderen Krankheiten nicht vernachlässigt werden. So wird MAGED2 in vielen Tumoren überexprimiert. Im Zusammenhang mit unseren Ergebnissen ist eine Überlegung, dass MAGED2 in der Tumorgenese eine bedeutende Rolle für die Anpassung der Tumorzellen an hypoxische Bedingungen hat und somit zum Progress und Wachstum von Tumoren beiträgt. Somit sollte ebenfalls die Rolle von MAGED2 für die Tumorgenese erforscht werden und MAGED2 als Angriffspunkt neuer Therapieansätze in Betracht gezogen werden
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
