Belonging to one of the most common families of insects in the world, Lucilia cuprina has great importance for being a veterinary causing of myiasis in animals of economic importance and humans. Due to its importance, attempts to control this species have been carried out.
However the use of chemical insecticides besides the development of resistance by insects, is harmful to the environment. The present work, sought to find a strain of Brevibacillus laterosporus that could be used as biological control agent of L. cuprina, given the lack of side effects to the environment and to humans. For such tests twelve solutions containing
strains of this bacterium were mixed to the diet offered to newly hatched larvae. As a result, we obtained rates of larval mortality 30-70% being inversely proportional to the concentration of bacteria in dilution afforded by having the highest mortality occurred with the lower density of bacteria. Besides sublethal effects such as the occurrence of deformities both inside and outside - as evidenced by the micrographs taken - deviations in sex ratio and changes in the viability of adult emergence of the test groups. The strain NRS 1648 proved to be the most promising as it caused the highest larval mortality. Moreover, it demonstrated, as well as the strain NRS 661, effectiveness in all dilutions afforded. The results of this study contradict the findings of Oliveira et al. (2004) that according to their criteria, NRS 1648 and NRS661 had the lowest toxicity to Nematocera Diptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and the mollusk Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818). Our results suggests that this bacterium is promising in the control of L. cuprina
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Educational processes of the professors of graduation courses in dentistry in the state of Goiás and the context of implementation of the national curriculum guidelines
The professors of the graduation courses in Dentistry are considered unprovided of certain types of knowledge which are inherent to the practice of higher education due to the fact that they are graduated in a bachelor‟s degree mode. Therefore, a question arises: how are they educated to practice teaching? For this reason, we present a short history about the interface health and higher education and this professor‟s educational processes. We also discourse upon the National Curriculum Guidelines for the graduation courses in Dentistry because those guidelines propose changes in the profile of the professionals, which demand a need for changes in the profile of the professor who educates those professionals. The present study aimed at analyzing the educational processes of the professors of the graduation courses in Dentistry and the context of implementation of the National Curriculum Guidelines. For this purpose, we investigated the pedagogical projects of the courses regarding teaching; we raised the professors‟ academic profile, the identification of experiences related by professors about their educational processes and perspectives in the context of implementation of the National Curriculum Guidelines, as well as the verification of the relation of those processes and the professors‟ knowledge of that document. We developed the study in the State of Goiás within the years of 2009 and 2010 and we used a quanti-qualitative methodology in three stages: analysis of documents, a self-applicable questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview. We opted for thematic analysis, which is one of the types of content analysis, and we made use of data triangulation. The main results we found were: there is little mention of potential educational processes in the Pedagogical Projects of the courses; the educational processes we found include family influence, schooling, interpersonal relationships, culture, socio-geographical characteristics, leisure activities, and professional experience. The professors presented little knowledge about the National Curriculum Guidelines and we did not find a direct relation between this knowledge when one or another educational process in present. The professors‟ formation does not take place in the professional dimension only. It is also personal, and the actors who are involved in this formation can be gathered as individual, collective, and/or institutiona
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
O ensino da odontologia no Brasil: concepções e agentes
The aim of this documental exploratory study was to investigate the evolution of dental education in Brazil based on three main organizations: the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Kellogg Foundation (KF) and
the Brazilian Dental Education Association (BDEA). The study covers the period since the institutionalization of dental education in Brazil in 1856, until the National Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses in 2002. References: high education and health education legislation, the history of high education in Brazil, and PAHO, KF and BDEA documents and recommendations about health human resources. Changes until 1961 were determined by government and were not attended by professional categories. Education was not in accordance with norms and disciplines were not homogeneous in different courses despite of the existence of legislation. In 1961, the Education Basis and Guidelines law, some distortions were amended. Universitary Reform in 1968, influenced by the North-American model, introduced changes like modernization of high education, and inclusion of levels
of education in Dentistry. Learning and practice models had structural limits due to high costs and difficulties for implementation. Many interventions tried to adjust dental education to the regional and national scenario and to include Dentistry in the health area. It must be highlighted the importance of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses, as a result of the Viña del Mar Seminar (1955), and the involvement of PAHO, KF and BDEA in this process. The collective construction of the National Curriculum Guidelines emphasized the need of an effective public health system and professional education in
accordance with public services. Different protagonists and concepts originated many discussions and tensions, often not understudied by professionals. Concepts and political and pedagogical projects in dental education need to be more cleared and professional categories must lead the construction of a new dentist and reinforcement of the Sanitary Reform. Local and regional disparities also may be taken into account in this process. Dental profession must also conduct discussion about dental personnel, including
Período do estudo abrangeu desde a
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
