While the concept of this initiative appears appealing, factors such as trust levels toward China, opinions on China’s national image, and disputes between the Philippines and China have prevented these Chinese-Filipino young professionals from fully accepting the BRI. Focusing on the people-to people bonds of this initiative, this study explores the opinions of third generation Chinese-Filipino young professionals toward China and the BRI using Muzafer Sherif’s Social Judgment Theory. It also suggests the usage of mass media to broadcast positive messages to a wider audience within a shorter amount of time to improve the image of China and increase awareness of the BRI
The Quest for Citations: Drivers of Article Impact
Get PDFWhy do some articles become building blocks for future scholars, while many others remain unnoticed? We aim to answer this question by contrasting, synthesizing and simultaneously testing three scientometric perspectives – universalism, social constructivism and presentation – on the influence of article and author characteristics on article citations. To do so, we study all articles published in a sample of five major journals in marketing from 1990 to 2002 that are central to the discipline. We count the number of citations each of these articles has received and regress this count on an extensive set of characteristics of the article (i.e. article quality, article domain, title length, the use of attention grabbers and expositional clarity), and the author (i.e. author visibility and author personal promotion). We find that the number of citations an article in the marketing discipline receives, depends upon “what one says†(quality and domain), on “who says it†(author visibility and personal promotion) and not so much on “how one says it†(title length, the use of attention grabbers, and expositional clarity). Our insights contribute to the marketing literature and are relevant to scientific stakeholders, such as the management of scientific journals and individual academic scholars, as they strive to maximize citations. They are also relevant to marketing practitioners. They inform practitioners on characteristics of the academic journals in marketing and their relevance to decisions they face. On the other hand, they also raise challenges towards making our journals accessible and relevant to marketing practitioners: (1) authors visible to academics are not necessarily visible to practitioners; (2) the readability of an article may hurt academic credibility and impact, while it may be instrumental in influencing practitioners; (3) it remains questionable whether articles that academics assess to be of high quality are also managerially relevant.Impact;Citation Analysis;Referencing;Scientometrics;Cite

Determinants of diarrheal disease in Jakarta
Get PDFIn this report, the authors develop and estimate a model of household defensive behavior and illness. Using cross-section data from a household survey in Jakarta, they observe defensive behavior (washing hands after using the toilet) consistent with expectations: defensive effort intensifies with exposure to contamination, and with income and education. Variables associated with the cost of defensive behavior - such as interruptions in the water supply - reduce defensive behavior. The data suggest that wealthier households are no less vulnerable to illness. The water sources that supply the wealthy (the water company and private wells) are disrupted more often, interfering with their defensive behavior. There is also evidence, although weak, to support findings by van der Slice and Briscoe (1993): that pathogens within a household are less harmful to household members than are pathogens originating from other households. Given the opportunity and knowledge, individuals try to modify the effect of contamination on the incidence of diarrhea. Distributed data management for large scale applications
No full textImprovements in data storage and network technologies, the emergence of new highresolution scientific instruments, the widespread use of the Internet and the World Wide Web and even globalisation have contributed to the emergence of new large scale dataintensive applications. These applications require new systems that allow users to store, share and process data across computing centres around the world. Worldwide distributed data management is particularly important when there is a lot of data, more than can fit in a single computer or even in a single data centre. Designing systems to cope with the demanding requirements of these applications is the focus of the present work.This thesis presents four contributions. First, it introduces a set of design principles that can be used to create distributed data management systems for data-intensive applications. Second, it describes an architecture and implementation that follows the proposed design principles, and which results in a scalable, fault tolerant and secure system. Third, it presents the system evaluation, which occurred under real operational conditions using close to one hundred computing sites and with more than 14 petabytes of data. Fourth, it proposes novel algorithms to model the behaviour of file transfers on a wide-area network.This work also presents a detailed description of the problem of managing distributed data, ranging from the collection of requirements to the identification of the uncertainty that underlies a large distributed environment. This includes a critique of existing work and the identification of practical limits to the development of transfer algorithms on a shared distributed environment. The motivation for this work has been the ATLAS Experiment for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, where the author was responsible for the development of the data management middleware
A Revista Azougue e o poeta Roberto Piva: o saque e a dádiva
Get PDFDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2011O estudo da revista de poesia Azougue (SP - RJ, 1996 - 2008) através da indexação no banco de dados do Núcleo de Estudos Literários e Culturais (Nelic) e análise da revista em seu conjunto de dez volumes, me permitiu perceber uma relação especial que se deu em suas páginas: o contato com o poeta Roberto Piva. Isso possibilitou um trajeto de leitura que se baseia na relação poeta/ revista via saque/dádiva, ou seja, há nesse contato uma espécie de reciprocidade: a revista é reconhecida pelos poetas que publica e o poeta é reconhecido por ter tido seus poemas nela publicados. Por conta disso, fez-se necessário voltar aos anos 1960 para verificar o contexto em que se inseriam Roberto Piva e outros poetas próximos a ele, cujos poemas foram republicados pela revista Azougue nos anos 1990. A idéia de rizoma, desenvolvida por Deleuze e Guattari, me permitiu explicar melhor a relação entre esses poetas, mostrando-se mais eficiente do que agrupá-los numa geração, pois há, na revista, antes que um grupo, uma ramificação entre os poetas publicados que iniciaram suas carreiras nos anos 1960 e outros em formação. Esses últimos pela colaboração na revista, passaram a escrever seus próprios poemas e publicá-los, muitos pelo selo Azougue
Anselm of Canterbury and the Development of Theological Thought, c. 1070-1141
Get PDFThis thesis explores the role of Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) in the development of theological thought in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. It aims to demonstrate that Anselm’s thought had a greater impact on the early development of scholastic theology than is often recognized, particularly in the areas of the doctrine of the incarnation and redemption, but also in his discussion of freedom and sin. Through his explanation of the economy of salvation in terms of making satisfaction for sin, and his rejection of modes of discussion that focussed on the rights and role of the devil, Anselm’s writing on the theology of the redemption provided a framework for the discussion of later authors such as Hugh of St Victor, Peter Abelard, Bernard of Clairvaux and authors associated with the School of Laon, among others. Such discussion often utilized Anselm as an explicator of difficult passages in patristic theology, notably Augustine, and his work was most controversial when he was thought to have contradicted earlier authority. Anselm was involved in contemporary polemics with both Jews and Christian theologians, as well as producing works that explored profound theological and metaphysical ideas. In his emphasis on the place and role of reason in divine questions, he crossed the boundaries between ‘monastic’ and ‘scholastic’ thought. Through an exploration of Anselmian elements in the thought of a variety of authors from the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, this thesis aims to contribute to a broadening understanding of the legacy of this great thinker
Corpo & violência: uma leitura das narrativas cinematográficas brasileiras do século XXI

Em meio ao contexto da violência, focalizei o corpo, enquanto elemento materializador da violência, buscando perceber de que forma ele é representado pelas narrativas fílmicas. Neste caso, o foco da pesquisa não se encontra no corpo enquanto elemento físico, porém sim enquanto símbolo representativo de algo que buscaremos identificar ao longo desta investigação. Para tanto, concentrei minha leitura em um conjunto de filmes lançados entre os anos de 2000 e 2004 que, direta ou indiretamente, promovem uma discussão mais contemporânea em torno da violência - sem, contudo, abrir mão de observar e fazer referência a filmes lançados anterior e posteriormente ao período trabalhado. Partindo de conceitos de imagem-tempo de Deleuze e de heterotopia de Foucault, esse trabalho é antes de tudo um olhar para a contemporaneidade através das narrativas fílmicas.This paper work is proposed to make a reading of recent Brazilian film narratives that bring the backdrop of the contemporary violence theme. Among the context of violence, I focused on the body as an element embodiment of violence, seeking to understand how it is represented by film narratives. In this case, the focus of the research is not in the body as a physical element, but rather as a representative symbol of something that will seek to identify, throughout this investigation. For that, I concentrated my reading on a number of films released between 2000 and 2004 that directly or indirectly promote more the contemporary discussion around violence - however don´t give up the observation and to make reference to previous films released before and after the period worked. Starting from the concepts of time-image of Deleuze and Foucault's heterotopy, this paper is primarily a look through the contemporary film narratives
'Beyond, both the Old World, and the New': Authority and Knowledge in the works of Francis Bacon, with special reference to the New Atlantis
No full textPhDThis study investigates the role of authority in the works of Francis Bacon,
arguing that the issue of authority provides not only an interpretation of New
Atlantis, but an important structural component of his body of works. From
the first manifestation of his philosophical project to his last works of natural
history, authority is an all-pervasive issue - the authority of nature, of
scripture, of the named author, and how authority functions in the
dissemination of natural knowledge. Chapter one argues that the publication
of New Atlantis alongside Sylva sylvarum in 1626/7 was more the result of
William Rawley's need to assert his own authority as the protector and
disseminator of Bacon's textual legacy than an appreciation of the work's own
qualities. Chapter two considers Bacon's views of history and time,
suggesting that Bacon not only conceived of a new, progressive mode of
historical time which would allow for the assertion of a textual authority based
on the records of a civilisation unbroken by the vicissitudes of time, but that
he figured these theories in New Atlantis. Chapter three argues that Bacon
used theology both as defence and imperative to his intellectual programme,
while his attempt to move beyond the deterministic, Calvinist world-view to
allow for multiple possible futures, or `chance': Bacon could then present
experiment as the way of eliminating chance, in order to accelerate the rate of
new discovery. Chapter four investigates Bacon's manipulations of textual
authority, from the early rehearsals of the Instauratio magna to the
performance of reliability in print in Sylva sylvarum. Finally, the afterword
seeks to suggest that the New Atlantis hinges on the issues of authority with
which Bacon engaged throughout his career and writings: in the issue of
authority, Francis Bacon found the beginning and the end of his philosophy
