Analysis of ships’ performance in port: AIS, experimental campaign, and simulation
The behavior of a passenger ship in a port, concerning power, speed, consumption, and emissions, can be investigated using various methods. To illustrate these different approaches, the outcomes of these three approaches have been compared on a case study of a passenger ship, for which the results of an experimental campaign, a bottom-up method based on AIS data, and the engine simulation results were available. The experimental campaigns were conducted along the vessel’s service routes. For the bottom-up approach, AIS data were processed using a custom MATLAB code to generate a detailed schedule of all in-port operations, and emissions were estimated using a globally recognized methodology based on emission factors. The engine simulation was calibrated using test bench results and validated during sea trials. Comparisons were made across various parameters, including speed, consumption, power, and emissions
How emissions from cruise ships in the port of Naples changed in the COVID-19 lock down period
The scope of this work is to try to quantify the reduction of emissions due to COVID-19; an analysis covering the
entire port of Naples will be presented. The explosion of the global pandemic from SARS-CoV-2 led to the adoption of local and global countermeasures aimed at containing contagions. The transportation sector, and in particular the passenger moving sector, was deeply affected; this almost total block of movements between regions and countries if, on the one hand, seriously slowed the economy, on the other, it drastically reduced the emissions on a global and local scale. In this work, the case study of the cruise ships berthed at the Maritime Station (Stazione Marittima) in the port of Naples is examined. The traffic of cruise ships during the lockdown and in the immediately following months was analysed and compared first with respect to the calendars scheduled for the same period and then with respect to the same months of 2019. The reduction in number of cruise ships and passengers were analysed and compared to the previous trends. The vessels collected, for 2019 and 2020 (both those that arrived and those that suffered the effects of the movement block) were subsequently characterized in terms of power and speed. Finally, an estimate of the emissions of NOX, SOX, CO2 produced and saved was carried out. The 2020 results will be compared with the hypothetical emissions that would have occurred in the absence of the lockdown and with those of the same period of the previous year
Climatic and tectonic control on the distribution of the Oligocene reefs of Tertiary Piedmont Basin (NW Italy)
The Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB) stretches along the Piedmont-Liguria border and is a late- to post-orogenic basin that evolved in a piggy-back position on the Monferrato thrust belt. Its depositional story is strongly controlled by tectonic and eustatic events. The basin was filled with mainly marine sediments (upper Eocene-upper Miocene), which unconformably overlie the Ligurian Alps and the Northern Apennines. The early stage of sedimentation of TPB records a transgressive phase (time-transgressive from the eastern to the western sectors, upper Eocene-upper Oligocene), characterized by the deposition of alluvial fan and fan delta siliciclastic conglomerates and sandstones, marine shallow-water coarse to fine grained siliciclastic sediments, and reef limestones. The TPB reefal buildups, which developed close to the paleoshoreline, have a lower Rupelian-middle Chattian stratigraphic distribution and are restricted to the central part of the southern margin of the TPB. The Valzemola-San Bernardino reef is the younger and the westernmost settlement, while the Val Lemme reef represents the older and easternmost one. The depicted stratigraphic and geographic distribution may be the result of a combined climatic and tectonic control. The lack of reef settlements west of Valzemola-Bric S. Bernardino may be due to climatic condition unfavourable for the reef development (temperature cooler than those of the early Rupelian-middle Chattian time interval). The absence of reefs in the area to the east of Val Lemme may be the consequence of bottom instability and high sedimentation rates (unfavourable conditions for the reef development) caused by the syn-sedimentary tectonic activity along the Scrivia fault, during the time interval spanning from the late Eocene to the early Oligocene (notwithstanding the favourable climatic conditions). Finally, the age of the older reefal complex, i.e. early Rupelian (Val Lemme), gives an obvious constraint to the age of the end of the N-vergent thrusting phase of the Voltri Unit onto the flysch units and its sedimentary cover

Desiderio e disciplina : progettare moda allo Iuav
Possible approaches to the study of the emissions from ships during their operations in ports
The quality of the air close to big ports mainly depends on the emissions from ships. Although it is difficult to determine emissions from ships, improving the assessment of these emissions could help port management to find logistic solutions that can contain the effect of the concentration of many large ships in small spaces. In this paper, a new research group will be presented: The cooperation between the University of Naples and Istanbul Technical University will be focused on the study of ship emissions in port. The paper will represent the starting point of these shared research activities; it will try to develop a methodology for estimating, measuring, and validating emissions in ports of the two areas
