Psychological, Physical Dysfunctions and Risk Factors of Hemiplegic Patients in Gaza Strip
The background and the purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the hemiplegic psychological and physical dysfunctions and the rehabilitation effect on these disabilities. Also to understand the different risk factors frequencies among hemiplegic patients in Gaza Strip. The methods: The study depend on cross sectional design. It included 163 rehabilitated hemiplegics, 96 of them are males, and 67 of them are females who were rehabilitated at the period from 1-1-2005 to 31-12-2010 at the national center for community rehabilitation and UNRWA physiotherapy centers in Gaza city and Khanyounes. The physical dysfunctions was measured by Short Form-36 (SF-36) instrument (physical functioning and role limitation due to physical health domains) and the psychological dysfunctions was measured by SCL – 90 - R scale. The researcher used SPSS for statistical analysis, frequency tables for all study variables, correlation between variables, sign-test to identify different mean relationship and cross tabulation using Chi-Square. The results: The study shows that males are exposed to hemiplegia more than females, age group above 40 years are more vulnerable to hemiplegia than younger ages and psychological stresses are the highest frequency risk factor for hemiplegia. The results show that 39.98% of the participants had psychological symptoms and only 6.75% of them passed the standard deviation above the mean which means high level of mental health. The results show that 75.96% had mild to moderate physical disabilities while 22.5% had role limitation due to physical health which means that most of the participants 77.5% has good satisfaction in their activities of daily living. The results show that hemiplegia physical disabilities are age dependent while functional disabilities are affected more by hypertension. The results show that the hemiplegic patients have the most benefits on the physical functioning domain when they commenced rehabilitation directly after having stroke and continued rehabilitation from 30 to 60 days, while the most benefits on the role limitation due to physical health domain when they commenced rehabilitation more than one year after having stroke and continued rehabilitation from 30 to 60 days. The results show that rehabilitation reduces the psychological symptoms effect when commenced directly after having stroke and continued rehabilitation from 30 to 6o days
The Psychological Impact of Al Aqsa Intifada Physical Injury on the Injured Palestinian Adults in Gaza Strip
Background : Researchers long been a concern in the study of physical injury and the extent of their impact on the functional aspect. Recently more attention is given to the psychological side of physical injury , but it is still low. In our region Israeli violence against Palestinians is considered the main cause of physical injury among Palestinian people especially among young adults ( Palestinian Health Information Centre ,2006), and it affect psychological state of Palestinian people at is shown in many studies . Objective of this study : The main purpose of this study is to asses the psychological impact of different physical injuries resulting from El-Aqsa Intifada events on injured Palestinian adults, and to determine the variables that may increase the risk of developing psychological problems after the physical injury including (age, sex, marital status ,educational level, occupation ,time since injury ,site of the injury and type of the injury . Study design : The researcher used in this study descriptive analytical approach, because this approach suits the nature of the study . Participants : The study sample consisted of 300 injured Palestinians from both sexes ,aged 18 or older who were injured through out Al- Aqsa intifada events between the period 2005 and 2008 and they live in Gaza Strip conservatisms, and who were registered in the Support of the Families of Martyrs and Injured Institution (SFMII). We exclude brain injuries. Instruments of the Study: SCL-90 scale was used to measure the nine psychological symptoms including depression ,anxiety, somatization, obsessive compulsive ,interpersonal sensitivity ,hostility ,phobic anxiety ,paranoid ideation and psychoticism , and simple questionnaire that describes the injury characteristics including ( site of the injury, nature of the injury, the type of weapons used , pain due to injury and healing from the injury ). Statistical Analysis : in this study we used Descriptive Statistics, Correlation Coefficient "Pearson" ,t-Test and One Way ANNOVA . Results : (1) The results related to descriptive analysis about the characteristics of the injury suffered by the individuals in the sample showed that The most commonly injured body regions were the limbs (74.0 %) and multiple body parts regions injury (60.0%). The face injury was (33 ,3 %), abdomen injury was (31.3 % ),chest injury was (29,7 % ), back injury was ( 28, 3%), pelvic injury was (16.7%),and finally( 14.3%) of cases was neck injury. Fragments and explosives (63,3 %) were the most common cause of injury. (34.3%) of the respondents were injured as a result of explosion of missile fragments resulting from aerial bombardment, while (29%) were injured as a result of the explosion fragments of artillery shells. Bullets accounted (36.7%), and( 7 %) for other weapons. (2)The results showed that more psychological symptoms which injured individuals suffer from it were somatization with relative weight of (39%), followed by obsessive-compulsive ( 33.2%) , interpersonal sensitivity (32.5%) , (32%) had depression, and (30.9%) for anxiety , and (30.3%) for hostility, (29.5%) for paranoid ideation , (26.2%, )for phobic anxiety and finally (25.1%) for psychotics .These psychological symptoms related to the following factors (older age, female gender ,low educational level, occupation, time since injury, site of the injury and type of the injury, but not related to marital status variable. Conclusions : The physical injury resulting from second Palestinian intifada uprising has a significant impact on the psychological wellbeing of the injured Palestinian adults in Gaza Strip. Recommendations : psychological aspect of physical injury should be given more attention and considered in all stages of trauma care intervention including rehabilitation to decrease the psychological suffering of the injured people and to prevent developing of the psychological disorde
Effectiveness of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) on Schizophrenic patients in Gaza strip
This study was aimed to know the effectiveness of ( WRAP) wellness recovery action plan on schizophrenic patient in Gaza governorate . Total sample of (33) female patients was picked through random selection then divided into two groups, experimental and control. Age, level of education, marital status, work, residential area and income were matched to maintain neutrality. Quantitative and qualitative method through (pre post design) through international scale (Recovery assessment scale ) that modified to be suitable Arabic culture, and focusing group then follow up was done after 4 months to know whether the effectiveness persistence of the program . Experimental group was conducted (WRAP) session (8-12weeks) but control group conducting usual care. Pretest conducted for both group shown there are no statistically significant differences at the level (0.05) between the mean scores of schizophrenic patients at the intervention group and schizophrenic patients at the control group regarding the dimensions of scale wellness recovery action . While for applied posttest for both group is shown that there are significant differences in patients with schizophrenic in the intervention and control groups ( P-value = 0.001), and the differences were in favor of the Intervention group, for the follow up test four month later shown, the presence of statistically significant differences in the dimension scores of hope in patients with schizophrenia in degrees post- test and sequential in the Intervention group (p-value = 0.036), and the differences were for the favor of post-test, this indicates that for degree of hope may decline with members of the intervention group after the passage of time. But other domain of (WRAP) there was no statistically significant differences in the degrees of dimensions scale of wellness recovery action plan regarding (goal, Self-responsibility, Support, Knowledge and self-advocacy) between the degrees in posttest and sequential in the intervention group. (p-value < 0.05). This mean that dimensions degrees of scale of wellness recovery action plan did not show differences or a significances for members of the Intervention group after passage of time. Also Experimental had reported significant increases in their hopefulness for their own recovery , awareness of their own early warning signs of decompensating, use of wellness tools in their daily routine , awareness of their own symptom triggers, having a crisis plan in place, having a plan for dealing with symptoms, and having a social support system, and , ability to take responsibility for their own wellness
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
