“Eyes on the Street”: Estimating Natural Surveillance Along Amsterdam’s City Streets Using Street-Level Imagery

    No full text
Neighborhood safety and its perception are important determinants of citizens’ health and well-being. Contemporary urban design guidelines often advocate urban forms that encourage natural surveillance or “eyes on the street” to promote community safety. However, assessing a neighborhood’s level of natural surveillance is challenging due to its subjective nature and a lack of relevant data. We propose a method for measuring natural surveillance at scale by employing a combination of street-level imagery and computer vision techniques. We detect windows on building facades and calculate sightlines from the street level and surrounding buildings across forty neighborhoods in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. By correlating our measurements with the city’s Safety Index, we also validate how our method can be used as an estimator of neighborhood safety. We show how perceived safety varies with window level and building distance from the street, and we find a non-linear relationship between natural surveillance and (perceived) safety.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Human-Centred Artificial IntelligenceInternet of Thing

Class separation of mutagenic polycyclic organic material in grilled and smoked foods

    No full text
A method for class separation of mutagenic polycyclic organic material in grilled and smoked foods is described. The procedure involves an initial extraction with acetone, removal of fat and proteins by precipitation at −55 °C, and an acid-base extraction. Further fractionation was carried out by gel filtration and silica gel chromatography. In four samples of grilled sausages, 80%–90% of the extracted mutagenicity (TA98 + S9) was contained in the basic fractions. Flame-grilled sausages showed higher mutagenicity than charcoal-grilled ones. In a smoked fish sample, the mutagenicity was low and evenly distributed between the basic and the neutral/acidic fractions. A few samples showed a weak direct-acting mutagenicity in the neutral/acidic fractions. The presence of nitrite in grilled sausages did not influence the mutagenicity markedly. Gas chromatography-selected ion monitoring was used to successfully identify a number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and tentatively identify several nitro-PAHs and oxygenated compounds. However, the identification of mutagens in the basic fractions was complicated by peak tailing and the presence of co-eluting material

The Finnish abortion law and its development is evaluated and the grounds and aims of the law are examined. The development of the abortion situation is described. On the basis of the above the author has reached the result that the Finnish abortion law has in many ways proven itself serviceable, the rate of abortions has reached such a low level that it is difficult to find a similar situation anywhere else in Europe. Illegal abortions have practically disappeared

The purpose of this thesis was to gather theory about hydrotherapy and its role in stroke patient rehabilitation and gathering information through interviewing clients on their views and experiences with hydrotherapy as being a part of their rehabilitation process post stroke. This topic was researched to get a deeper picture of hydrotherapy and its importance in being a part of a rehabilitation plan. The theoretical part of this thesis talks about hydrotherapy: its history, physiological and therapeutic effects of water and its importance. Thesis also includes theory on stroke: its risk factors, classification and diagnosis. This thesis answers questions on how hydrotherapy has an influence on physical strength, movement in joints, and overall well-being post stroke. For the practical part of the thesis, an interview was conducted for clients who currently have hydrotherapy as a part of their rehabilitation process and get a glimpse of their own experiences. Quantitative data for this study was conducted through an interview interviewed by the author. It was shown that comparing the theory and the client’s own experience, there were similarities between them. After analyzing the interview answers, there were improvements in muscle strength, improvements in joint movement and increase in self-confidence

However, their use in modeling and studying individual mobility and activity spaces is rather recent and limited. This paper focuses on the use of public participation GIS (PPGIS) data in activity space modeling and analysis and aims to draw more scholarly attention to the existing research potentials in this area. While reviewing the pros of using PPGIS for activity space studies, this paper also discusses the existing limitations and outlines how they can be addressed in future research. PPGIS effectively enables collecting data from larger samples, making it possible to conduct more comprehensive geospatial and statistical analyses on the data. Additionally, the strong link between individuals and places in PPGIS data facilitates more person-based approaches in investigating person-environment relationships. However, use of PPGIS for activity space studies comes with analytical and data quality challenges that need to be thoroughly taken into consideration. Particularly, future research needs to seek new ways of including the temporal dimension in PPGIS and find new methods of using the data for activity space modeling and analysis.Peer reviewe
