Interactive Image Generation with Relevance Feedback on GANs

    No full text
Finding information such as images that match the users need is a demanding task. The user has to be aware of the right keywords to search with and the underlying collection might not contain the intended images for all users. We propose a methodology to overcome these limitations by generating images matching the users needs instead of retrieving them from a collection. The methodology combines generative adversarial networks (GANs) capable of generating photorealistic images with relevance feedback from users. The methodology was evaluated with 29 user experiments where users were given a set of image retrieval tasks to find images not present in the collection of images. The images generated using the system were compared to the baseline images the users picked from a set of images representing image search results. The results from the study show that image quality was improved significantly across all image domains (cats, cars, beds, faces) and relative improvement was greater the less the starting image had in common with the target. The results suggest that generating images can be more useful than retrieving them from an existing collection

Generating Images Instead of Retrieving Them : Relevance Feedback on Generative Adversarial Networks

    No full text
Finding images matching a user’s intention has been largely basedon matching a representation of the user’s information needs withan existing collection of images. For example, using an exampleimage or a written query to express the information need and re-trieving images that share similarities with the query or exampleimage. However, such an approach is limited to retrieving onlyimages that already exist in the underlying collection. Here, wepresent a methodology for generating images matching the userintention instead of retrieving them. The methodology utilizes arelevance feedback loop between a user and generative adversarialneural networks (GANs). GANs can generate novel photorealisticimages which are initially not present in the underlying collection, but generated in response to user feedback. We report experiments(N=29) where participants generate images using four differentdomains and various search goals with textual and image targets. The results show that the generated images match the tasks andoutperform images selected as baselines from a fixed image col-lection. Our results demonstrate that generating new informationcan be more useful for users than retrieving it from a collection ofexisting information.Peer reviewe

    No full text
The main idea for this thesis came from the author’s personal knowledge and interest in the gaming in-dustry. The author is strongly interested in studying the ongoing phenomenon of microtransactions. The author actively follows the latest trends and news happening in the industry and has encountered multiple times news or discussions regarding microtransactions. Seeing topics actively brought to daylight re-garding them, the author wanted to figure out how commonly microtransactions are bought and used by active consumers of video games. This thesis will focus on video games and respectively to microtransactions that are offered in the most newly released games. The objective of this thesis is to study microtransactions, their popularity, and the reasons behind their success. During the research process, qualitative data were collected in form of a questionnaire from the survey participants regarding the usage of microtransactions. Desk research was done to gather and study data through different materials available from various online sources including academic literature and online journal articles. One of the main research questions is to find out how popular these microtransactions are with the users, where the built questionnaire acted as a tool to gather data towards this question. The thesis also takes a brief look at the present video games market and their popularity in the entertainment industry and looks through the legal aspects affecting them. Based on the findings it can be pointed out that microtransactions are commonly bought between active users. Players are most willing to pay for a cosmetic form of microtransactions and games where micro-transactions are bought often, are presenting a free-to-play business model

Tämän opinnäytetyön aiheena on musiikkiraidan tekeminen lyhytelokuvaan ”Otus syvältä”. The subject of this thesis was to compose a soundtrack for the short film ”Creature from the Deep - Otus syvältä”. This thesis consists of the artistic part and the written report. The short film itself was shot in the summer of 2018 and the music and final cut was finished in time for this thesis the next autumn. The author feels that the outcome was successful and the information gathered from the process gave good insight on the movie music composing process and encouraged the author to test something completely different. This written part goes through the whole process all the way from brainstorming of the music to the final cut. First, there is a short dive to the history of movie music in general and also to the process of composing movie music. Finally, thoughts and reflections about the work process and the end results are presented

Wage policies and the integration of immigrants

    No full text
Most Nordic countries struggle with the integration of low-skilled immigrants. Relying on research from primarily the Nordics, we discuss to what extent minimum wage reductions can improve labour market prospects for immigrants, whether unskilled and low-pay jobs serve as stepping stones to more qualified and higher-paid jobs and how wages of incumbent workers would be affected by lower minimum wages. We argue that targeted minimum wage reductions aimed at new, previously non-existing jobs and increased differentiation of minimum wages according to experience provide an appropriate balance between the conflicting goals of high employment and low wage inequality. This is a slightly longer version of Ek and Skedinger (2019), We thank Pernilla Andersson Joona, the editors, participants at the seminar arranged by Nordregio on November 6, 2018, and an anonymous reviewer for valuable comments and suggestions. The second author gratefully acknowledges financial support from Jan Wallanders och Tom Hedelius stiftelse and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.</p

The subject of the thesis is to design a menswear collection REMALE which combines feminine and masculine features through cut, material and colour. No full text
Opinnäytetyö käsittelee digitaalisen animaation luontia. Valmis video toimii lyriikka- tai musiikkivideona videon tilaajalle, Volucrine-yhtyeelle. Työssä keskitytään lähinnä animaation tekemiseen yksin; kuinka se toteutetaan mahdollisimman tehokkaasti ja miten toimitaan mahdollisissa ongelmatilanteissa. Opinnäytetyössä käytetyt ohjelmat ovat Adoben Photoshop sekä After Effects. Opinnäytetyö on kirjoitettu koko animaatioprosessin kannalta, joka käsittää grafiikan piirtämisen Photoshopissa ja animoimisen After Effectissä. Koko työprosessi kuvataan loogisesti alusta loppuun. Samalla pyritään selvittämään Photoshopin ja After Effectsin yhteistyökäyttöä, sekä projektin muutosten vaikutusta työprosessiin. Työn tekijä pitää erittäin tärkeänä tapaa jolla Photoshop ja After Effects toimii yhdessä. Myös sovellusten avonainen tapa käsitellä projekteja on erittäin tärkeä ja tämän projektin tapauksessa lähes ehdoton. The subject of this thesis is the creation of a digital animation. The video made for this study acts as a lyric or music video to a band, the Volucrine. This work focuses mainly on making the animation itself; how the work process is carried out as efficiently as possible and how to deal with eventual problem situations. The programmes used in this thesis are Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. This thesis is written in terms of the entire animation process which comprises of drawing graphics in Photoshop and animating in After Effects. The whole work process is described logically, from the beginning to the end. At the same time this thesis seeks to determine the co-operation between Photoshop and After Effects, and clarify the impact that the changes made in the project has on the work process. The author thinks that the way how Photoshop and After Effects work together, is very important. In addition, the open way the applications can be used in dealing with different projects is very important, and in this thesis project almost a indispensable requirement

In this bachelor’s thesis a user management system was planned and implemented for the author’s own web application.
