This article analyses a grant for developing social innovation projects promoted by a philanthropic foundation in Turin. The analysis is carried out against the backdrop of the critical debate that problematises the key role of philanthropy in financing the strategies related to the 2030 Agenda. The aim is to understand how and to what extent the alignment of philanthropic action with the 2030 Agenda is translated into policies supporting a neoliberal urban development agenda. The case study was investigated using a qualitative method derived from the Cultural Political Economy approach, which combines participatory observation, documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews. The results show how the effectual character of the call as a neoliberalisation dispositive can be read by virtue of its duplicity. One side of this duplicity lies in the ability to express its promoters’ interest in the marketisation of the third sector. The other side consists in the possibility of legitimising this interest only through discourses and practices that conceal it through a mix of depoliticising strategies in which the territorial dimension has primary importance. This article analyses a grant for developing social innovation projects promoted by a philanthropic foundation in Turin. Partial discharges within two spherical voids in an epoxy resin

A void in a dielectric insulation material may exist due to imperfection in the insulation manufacturing or long term stressing. Voids have been identified as one of the common sources of partial discharge (PD) activity within an insulation system, such as in cable insulation and power transformers. Therefore, it is important to study PD phenomenon within void cavities in insulation. In this work, a model of PD activity within two spherical voids in a homogeneous dielectric material has been developed using finite element analysis software to study the parameters affecting PD behaviour. The parameters that have been taken into account are the void surface conductivity, electron generation rate and the inception and extinction fields. Measurements of PD activity within two spherical voids in an epoxy resin under ac sinusoidal applied voltage have also been performed. The simulation results have been compared with the measurement data to validate the model and to identify the parameters affecting PD behaviour. Comparison between measurements of PD activity within single and two voids in a dielectric material have also been made to observe the difference of the results under both conditions

“A place for my art”: independent artist-run spaces as incubators of artistic careers in Italy

This paper investigates the role of Italian independent artists-run spaces as incubators of artistic careers. Considering the trade-off between the sustainability of artist-run spaces and that of the careers of the people working in them, this article raises questions about the viability of the artists' support provided by these organizations in the medium and long run. Based on an in-depth analysis of fourteen case studies in Italy, our findings provide evidence of how artist-run spaces' organizational, managerial, and financial characteristics can work towards the professional development of artistic careers. We identify different trajectories of development of such organizations which vary according to the field of intervention chosen and to the motivation to establish and run the space. Results show how these factors influence the capacity of artist-run spaces to provide more effective strategies than those individually pursued by the artists to face the complexity of their labour market

Urban alternative cultural production in Turin: An ecological community approach

From the ashes of the creative city paradigm, there is a growing awareness of the urban creative economy as an adaptive complex system of intertwined actors and institutions. Yet, especially in the European context, little attention has been given to understanding informal and alternative art spaces and venues that contribute to the vibrancy of the urban cultural scene. Drawing on the emerging creative and cultural ecology literature, the article proposes a conceptual and empirical framework to analyze alternative cultural production as an ecological community. After providing a conceptualization of distinct types of alternative cultural organizations, we investigate the economic, spatial, and relational structure of more than 50 art spaces in Turin, Italy, an industrial city that has experienced a radical urban transformation based on culture-led development strategies. Using both a quantitative and qualitative approach, our findings unveil a distinction between centers pursuing artistic specialization and those more oriented toward aggregating diversified cultural activities. The two types of organizations coexist within the community, but the difference in their mission and operation influences the organizational structure, the involvement in neighborhood revitalization, and features of the local network of collaborations. From a spatial perspective, while the centers tend to cluster in the main peripheral areas of social and urban transformation, the analysis points out possible different locational choices and spatial dynamics for the two types of organizations in distinct areas of commercial and real-estate-led transformation

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
