The metabolic profile of Asinara (albino) and Sardo donkeys (pigmented) (Equus asinus L., 1758) points to unequivocal breed assignment of individuals
This study pointed to explore if variations in circulating levels of metabolites in the blood stream of no. 25 feral donkeys occur in view of the different coat color between specimens of Asinara (albino, no. 8) vs. Sardo (dun-grey, no. 17) breed. All individuals involved in this investigation are living in the nature, at Mediterranean latitudes and roam in the same areas all over the National Park of Capo Caccia, where they feed on spontaneous vegetation sources. The study was conducted during the positive photoperiod of the boreal hemisphere (peak in the month of June, 2019) to maximize the effect of exposure to the natural sun radiation and thus elicit the coping ability of albino (Asinara) in comparison with pigmented donkeys (Sardo). The biochemical profile of all donkeys was used in a Discriminant Analysis (DA) to explore if circulating levels of metabolites could point to metabolic markers for breed assignment of individuals following a canonical discriminant analysis (CANDISC). The biochemical investigation included also the determination of the circulating Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol, α-TOH), as an essential biologically active compound involved in antioxidant mechanisms, and its respective status (circulating α-TOH to total triglycerides and total cholesterol ratio). In the CANDISC, the distance between the two breeds was not significant. However, it pointed to different metabolites (UREA, total protein, total triglycerides, Zn) capable of describing biochemical patterns on each respective breed (Asinara vs. Sardo). The multivariate analysis DA carried out using 22 metabolites correctly assigned individuals to the two breeds in the 100% of cases. In view of such metabolic background, circulating α-TOH found in the bloodstream of Asinara vs. Sardo donkeys under free grazing conditions turned out to reach similar values (2.114 vs. 1.872 µg/ml, respectively, p = 0.676). It is worth noting that significant differences were observed as to circulating lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, p = 0.022) levels, in association with increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK, p = 0.076), both above the upper limit of the physiological range reported in other donkey breeds, and found in the totality of Asinara (albino) donkeys solely, still apparently clinically healthy
Stories from the Lapidarium: legio IIII Flavia Felix in Dalmatia
The author discusses the fragment of a single-section funerary stele kept in the Lapidarium of the Archaeological Museum Zadar. Although it does not contain any special features – even its inscription is not fully preserved – a detail of the inscription reveals an interesting fact that can be seen as solid evidence that legio IIII Flavia Felix was actually a reconstituted legio IIII Macedonica that had occupied the vacated encampment on the River Krka. The known facts about the founding of IIII Flavia Felix Legion and its deployment in Dalmatia are also discussed. An overview of the inscriptions containing the legion’s members from Dalmatian soil is also provided
Do-It-Yourself Opinion-Poll Sampling Experiments
This article, created by Flavia R. Jolliffee of Brunel University, describes a sampling experiments based on opinion-poll type data as an alternative to coin-tossing experiments for social science students. Jolliffe includes interesting data sets within this basic lesson plan. It seems that the author is attempting to provide a more riveting experience for students, at least in comparison to a coin-tossing example. The author provides references for those looking for further information on this topic
Feed Preference, Daily Intake, and Laying Performance of Captive-Born Sardinian Partridges (Alectoris barbara barbara Bonnaterre, 1790) Offered Whole Defrosted Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor L., 1758) as Raw Feed Material with Diet
The competence to locate natural feeding sources is one of the main limiting factors for survival in the wild, especially for captive-born birds. Therefore, environmental enrichment through the diet can be strategic before their release into nature. In this research, a feeding trial was undertaken to evaluate the potential use of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) larvae (TM) provisions to captive bred couples of Sardinian partridges (Alectoris barbarabarbara Bonaterre, 1790) during the laying period. Twenty-four couple-caged Sardinian breeding partridges were enrolled during the laying period (April–May 2019) and randomly allotted to two feeding groups of 12 couples each: (a) the control (CON) group was fed a conventional complete pelleted diet for laying quails; (b) the yellow mealworm enriched group was additionally fed 5% whole, defrosted TM larvae (TM5%) on top of the same amount of the control diet. As a prerequisite, partridges were unaccustomed to eating mealworms before the start of the trial. Daily feed intake (DFI), bodyweight (BW), and number of laid eggs (LE) were monitored over five weeks of experimental feeding. Partridges fed the TM5% diet displayed a higher preference for whole mealworms (first choice and complete consumption) than expressed for the CON pelleted feed. Differences in daily dry matter intake (p = 0.028) between CON and TM5% groups were observed (DMI: 42.6 ± 1.73 vs. 43.4 ± 1.62 g, respectively); the final body weights (BW) (p = 0.098) of birds in the CON group was higher than those in the TM5% group (435 ± 36.9 vs. 416 ± 36.3 g, respectively). Differences in daily energy intake relative to BW (p < 0.001) as well as relative to metabolic weight (BW0.75) (p < 0.001) were observed between groups, but this was not followed by higher BW, probably due to the absence of grit and inaccessible nutrients and energy (larval exoskeleton). No difference in the average LE per week and egg weight was observed between CON and the enriched TM5% groups, though in the last weeks, a statistically lower number of eggs was laid in TM5% group. Our results suggest that whole yellow mealworms can be a promising feed material to broaden the spectrum of competence for natural feeding sources with similar physical form and nutritional characteristics available in the environment
Epidemiological survey of gastrointestinal helminths and protozoa in Testudines from Sardinia, Italy
The order Testudines comprises some of the most endangered groups of vertebrates. Under specific circumstances, infectious and parasitic diseases may affect the survival and fecundity of these animals, potentially threatening Testudines populations. In Sardinia, besides the three species of tortoises present in the wild (Testudo hermanni, Testudo graeca and Testudo marginata), many others are kept as pets. However, epidemiological studies on these animals have not been conducted so far. Thus, the aim of the work was to investigate the presence of gastrointestinal parasites in captive and wild tortoises of Sardinia, Italy, with particular regard to those of zoonotic importance. For the 215 animals examined (n = 36 wild caught and n = 179 private-owned), fecal samples were collected and processed by flotation and modified Ziehl–Neelsen technique. An overall prevalence of 81.4% for endoparasites was detected, with oxyurids being the most prevalent (74.4%), followed by Nyctotherus spp. (18.6%), Cryptosporidium spp. (12.6%), Angusticaecum spp. (2.8%), strongyles (0.9%), Balantidium spp. (0.9%), coccidia (0.9%), cestodes (0.5%), and Giardia spp. (0.5%). Data suggest that tortoises are affected by a great variety of endoparasites, and further molecular analysis are required to assess the impact of Cryptosporidium and Giardia species in these hosts. Therefore, regular health screenings are of importance for the management of these animals and for preventing emerging infectious diseases
Il Boccaccio di Baldassar Castiglione: la duplice immagine del Certaldese nelle pagine del "Cortegiano"
Giovanni Boccaccio is quoted several times in Castiglione’s "Cortegiano", but all these mentions are inserted in two specific contexts: on the one hand, the debate on literary language, developed in the letter of dedication to don Michel De Silva and in the first book; on the other hand, the definition of the joke in book II. Starting from these premises, this essay analyses the meanings of Boccaccio’s presence in the "Cortegiano". It shows that Castiglione’s treatise provides two different and concurrent representations of the author of the "Decameron": a positive one, connected to the ‘questione della lingua’, that offers Boccaccio as a promoter of the usage (‘uso’); a critical one, deriving from the theory of the ‘facezia’, that makes Boccaccio a challenging and challenged model

Despite its architectural appeal, no monographic study has been devoted to the monastery of San Pietro in Montorio. By comparing documented sources with present-day surveys of the building, direct observation data and probes conducted with modern technologies, the author retraces the configuration of both monastery and church the time they were restored by Amedeo Menez de Silva (1472-1482) and examines its further development to date, focusing in particular on the construction of the two cloisters
