ML-Ask - eMotive eLement and Expression Analysis

    No full text

ML-Ask, or eMotive eLement and Expression Analysis system, is a keyword-based language-dependent system for automatic affect annotation on utterances in Japanese. It uses a two-step procedure: 1. Specifying whether a sentence is emotive, and 2. Recognizing particular emotion types in utterances described as emotive. The database of emotemes was hand-crafted and contains 907 emotemes, which include such groups of emotemes as interjections, mimetic expressions (gitaigo in Japanese), vulgar language, or emotive sentence markers. The emotive expression database is a collection of over two thousand expressions describing emotional states. ML-Ask also implements the idea of Contextual Valence Shifters (CVS) for Japanese with 108 syntactic negation structures. Finally, ML-Ask implements Russell’s two dimensional model of affect. The model assumes that all emotions can be represented in two dimensions: the valence (positive/negative) and activation (activated/deactivated).
The software is released under New BSD License. When I am sixty-four… evaluating language markers of well-being in healthy aging narratives

Natural language use is a promising candidate for the development of innovative measures of well-being to complement self-report measures. The type of words individuals use can reveal important psychological processes that underlie well-being across the lifespan. In this preregistered, cross-sectional study, we propose a conceptual model of language markers of well-being and use written narratives about healthy aging (N = 701) and computerized text analysis (LIWC) to empirically validate the model. As hypothesized, we identified a model with three groups of language markers (reflecting affective, evaluative, and social processes). Initial validation with established self-report scales (N = 30 subscales) showed that these language markers reliably predict core components of well-being and underlying processes. Our results support the concurrent validity of the conceptual language model and allude to the added benefits of language-based measures, which are thought to reflect less conscious processes of well-being. Future research is needed to continue validating language markers of well-being across the lifespan in a theoretically informed and contextualized way, which will lay the foundation for inferring people’s well-being from their natural language use

Quaint Fantasy. Apprehension of Michal Ajvaz as an Author of Magical Realism

    No full text
The thesis deals with a question if it is appropriate to consider Czech writer Michal Ajvaz to be an author of magical realism. His fiction usually incorporates supernatural objects or events into a natural fictional world just as in the fiction of magical realism. The thesis analyses the nature of magic motifs and events in the studied literature, as well as literary techniques, which are used to achieve this specific kind of poetics. By examination of the canonical works of magical realism, such as the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by G. G. Márquez, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende or the novel Midnight Children by S. Rushdie, we can specify the structure of this literary genre and compare it to the texts of Michal Ajvaz. In a survey, we focus on two Ajvaz's early novels - the fantastic one The Other City (1993) and the philosophical prose The Golden Age (2001). KEYWORDS Michal Ajvaz, magical realism, magic realism, postmodernism, The Other City, The Golden Ag

Poetics of affectivity by Michal Tallo

Michal Tallo belongs to the young generation reviving certain aspects of anesthetic poetics, which formed in Slovak poetry at the beginning of the 1990s. Anesthetic procedures are directly related to the observed aspect of emotionality in Tallo‘s work. The paper follows the male lyrical heroes from the collections Antimita (Anti-intimacy) (2016), Δ [Delta] (Delta) (2018), Kniha tmy (The Book of Darkness) (2021), and the male characters of the short story Futbal (Football) from the book Všetko je v poriadku, všade je láska (All is well, there is love everywhere) (2024). The paper focuses primarily on one element of Michal Tallo poetics, which is called "admitted affectivity." Affectivity proves specific characteristics of the author\u27s work, which oscillate between the two extreme positions of suppressing and releasing emotions.Michal Tallo belongs to the young generation reviving certain aspects of anesthetic poetics, which formed in Slovak poetry at the beginning of the 1990s. Conversational repairs on Reddit: Widely initiated but often uncompleted.

    No full text
Conversational repair has been proposed as a universal system for maintaining mutual understanding during social interactions. The repair system has been studied extensively in offline synchronous interactions (e.g., face-to-face, phone calls) and has been observed across cultures and languages. However, the prevalence of conversational repairs is unclear in online asynchronous text-based interactions. Online interactions are increasingly important for public deliberation, and it is therefore important to understand how conversational repairs manifest in different online contexts. To address this gap, we conducted two analyses of Other-initiated repairs in 25 English-language Reddit communities (subreddits), covering a diverse range of topics and communication norms. Analysis 1 examines the frequency of repair initiations across subreddits, finding them to be widespread (in every subreddit) and frequent (58.48% of interactions experience a repair initiation). Analysis 2 examines the emergence of repairs, finding that a repair initiation becomes increasingly likely the longer a comments thread progresses (Median time-to-repair = 6 turns). These results suggest that the prevalence and emergence of repair initiations in online interactions are comparable to offline contexts. However, we also find 44.80% of initiations receive no reply, precluding the possibility of a repair completion. Thus, conservatively, nearly half of the repair initiations in our data went uncompleted. This suggests that the online medium alters the way initiations are completed compared to offline interactions. We discuss the implications of this finding and avenues for future research

Thinking about life in COVID-19: An exploratory study on the influence of temporal framing on streams-of-consciousness.

    No full text
The COVID-19 global pandemic led to major upheavals in daily life. As a result, mental health has been negatively impacted for many, including college students who have faced increased stress, depression, anxiety, and social isolation. How we think about the future and adjust to such changes may be partly mediated by how we situate our experiences in relation to the pandemic. To test this idea, we investigate how temporal framing influences the way participants think about COVID life. In an exploratory study, we investigate the influence of thinking of life before versus during the pandemic on subsequent thoughts about post-pandemic life. Participants wrote about their lives in a stream-of-consciousness style paradigm, and the linguistic features of their thoughts are extracted using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). Initial results suggest principal components of LIWC features can distinguish the two temporal framings just from the content of their post-pandemic-oriented texts alone. We end by discussing theoretical implications for our understanding of personal experience and self-generated narrative. We also discuss other aspects of the present data that may be useful for investigating these thought processes in the future, including document-level features, typing dynamics, and individual difference measures
