Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
A new LAD curve fitting algorithm: slightly overdetermined equation systems in L_1
We present a new algorithm for the discrete LAD curve-fitting problem for n points in k < eq n dimensional space. When k is about n/3 it begins to out-perform the best current methods, and the advantage increases with k. The algorithm should be of interest in approximation theory and in robust regression. Moreover our approach may be useful in linear optimization, especially in linear programming.Technical report DCS-TR-10

Sacred and Contested Landscapes: Dynamics of Natural Resource Management by Akha People in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China
Through careful analyses of rich oral texts of their migratory history, genealogies and rituals, as well as using historical records in Chinese, archaeological evidence, and ethnographic data, this study traces the history of Akha people, a Tibeto-Burman speaking group in Zomia, back to their original homeland Tmqlanr where their ancestors were hunter-gathers. The author hypothesizes the Tmqlanr refers to Tianchi (Sky Lake) in Tianshan or Sky Mountain, northwest China. The author argues that their animist belief and community-of-beings worldview were well developed when they were hunter-gathers. A huge wild fire forced the ancestors of the Akha to leave their original homeland and started their millennia long southward migration. It is evident that the Akha ancestors became agriculturalists and were involved in building several ancient Tibeto-Burman states and contributed to several ancient civilizations in Southwest China and eventually established their own state Jadae, centered in Yuanjiang valley of the Red River, roughly in AD1054 through AD1274 when it was conquered by the Mongol Empire of the Yuan Dynasty. The author argues that the Akha identity was formed in the process of building, defending and losing the Jadae State. Rice cultivation in irrigated paddy fields was the economic basis of the Jadae State. Collapse of the Jadae State forced the Akha people to migrate further southward; they became one of the biggest shifting cultivating groups in highlands of Zomia, where they still reproduced sacred landscapes according to the worldview developed by their hunting-gathering ancestors and managed their natural resources through a holistic body of customary law Ghanrsanrkhovq standardized in the Jadae State. As the Akha were integrated into modern nation-states in this region, their sacred landscapes were confronted by the state landscapes of productivity and control. The Akha have not only become successful entrepreneurs who developed tea and/or rubber plantations in the process of adapting to the contested landscapes in China, but also have coped with the challenges imposed by the state through reinterpretation of their ancient animist beliefs and community-of-being worldview. Drawing on lessons learned from the case study of the Akha, issues of sustainable development are discussed at the end
Stefans Grove : Images from Africa - 'n analise (Afrikaans)
Images from Africa bestaan uit ses stukke, naamlik Rain Valley, Night Music from Somewhere, Yemoja, Great Mother of the Waters, Innovation of the Water Spirits, Lamenting Birds en Dream Memories of an Old Dancer. Hierdie stukke is elkeen individueel bespreek met betrekking tot ritme, toonhoogte, melodie, vorm en tekstuur. Elke hoofstuk is van notevoorbeelde voorsien. ENGLISH The works in Stefans Grové's Music from Africa series are thought of as some of the most important in the South African art music repertoire. Although piano works such as Nonyana, the Ceremonial dancer and Songs and Dances from Africa are very popular and often performed, Images from africa is relatively unknown. The author supplied a short biography of the composer, as well as 'n summary of the Music from Africa series. In the latter chapter, the so-called "Damascus experience" that gave way to the Africa oeuvre, is explained. The most important compositional techniques (such as melodic and rhythmic permutation) are also explained, and supplied with music examples, where necessary. Images from Africa consists of six pieces, entitled Rain Valley, Night Music from Somewhere, Yemoja, Great Mother of the Waters, Invocation of the Water Spirits, Lamenting Birds and Dream Memories of an Old Dancer. These have been discussed individually with reference to rhythm, pitch, melody, form and texture, Each chapter has been supplied with music examples.Musicunrestricte

Yu. N. Chumakov: Memories of Meeting Yu. M. Lotman
The article features an excerpt from Chumakov’s memoirs, describing how, in the late 1960s, he got acquainted with Lotman’s book Lectures on Structural Poetics and then met the author of the lectures at the Pushkin Conference in Pskov. According to the memoirist, Lotman’s Lectures on Structural Poetics gave literary studies in the 1970s a new language, which may then have been modified within some other schools of literary studies, but it laid the foundation for the scientific description of the fiction text. Investigation of the fiction text has been characterized since the late 1960s by the structuralist approach. The memoirs also mention Chumakov’s defending his candidate dissertation, in which Lotman acted as an opponent (the dissertation was entitled “Problems of Pushkin’s Poetics: (Lyrics, The Stone Guest, Eugene Onegin)” and was defended in Saratov, in 1970.
One part of Chumakov’s candidate dissertation, as well as his report at the Pushkin conference in Pskov, was devoted to the role of the notes and “Passages from Onegin’s Journey” in Pushkin’s novel “Eugene Onegin”. Independently of each other, Chumakov and Lotman came to the conclusion that the notes are not a supplement, but real independent parts within the novel in verse, along with its eight chapters
Evaluating Citebase, an open access Web-based citation-ranked search and impact discovery service
Citebase is a new citation-ranked search and impact discovery service that measures citations of scholarly research papers which are openly accessible on the Web, i.e. papers that are assessable continuously online. Other services, such as ResearchIndex, have emerged in recent years to offer citation indexing of Web research papers. In the first detailed user evaluation of an open access Web citation indexing service, Citebase has been evaluated by nearly 200 users from different backgrounds. The paper details the procedures used in the evaluation, and analyses the results of this study, which took place between June and October 2002. It was found that within the scope of its primary components, the search interface and services available from its rich bibliographic records, Citebase can be used simply and reliably for the purpose intended, and that it compares favourably with other bibliographic services. It is shown tasks can be accomplished efficiently with Citebase regardless of the background of the user. More data need to be collected and the process refined before it is as reliable for measuring citation impact of indexed papers. Better explanations and guidance are required for first-time users. Coverage is seen as a limiting factor, even though Citebase indexes over 200,000 papers from arXiv. Non-physicists were frustrated at the lack of papers from other sciences. The principle of citation searching of open access archives has thus been demonstrated and need not be restricted to current users. Since the evaluation, Citebase has become a featured service of the ArXiv physics eprint archives
Showing the essential science structure of a scientific domain and its evolution
Category cocitation and its representation through social networks is proving to be a very adequate technique for the visualization and
analysis of great scientific domains. Its combination with pathfinder networks using pruning values r=∞and q=n−1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the `most salient structure'. The possible loss of structural information, caused by aggressive pruning in peripheral areas of the networks, is overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great usefulness in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines for development. This article presents the scientogram of the United States for the year 2002, identifying its essential structure. We also show the scientograms of China for the years 1990 and 2002, in order to study its particular national evolution.
Finally, we try to detect patterns and tendencies in the three scientograms that would allow one to predict or flag the evolution of a scientific domain
Two New Amoebae, Striamoeba sparolata n. sp. and Flamella tiara n. sp., from Fresh Water
Author Institution: Department of Biological Sciences, Youngstown State University and Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, University of KansasTwp new amoebae are described from phase contrast observations made on specimens collected from Florida and Ohio, USA. Ohio specimens occurred among Aufwuchs on the midland painted turtle, Chrysemys picta marginata, and the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina serpentina, while Florida specimens were found among the bottom detritus in muddy ponds. Striamoeba sparolata n. sp. (Thecamoebidae) is spearhead-shaped, 35-45 (xm by 12.5-22.5 |^m at the broadest point when in motion, with a clear bulbous anterior end and smooth uroid. There are usually two indistinct dorsal ridges, a spherical nucleus, 2-4 jam in diameter with a variable number of parietal nucleolar pieces and many endoplasmic lightrefractile granules. No pseudopods are formed during locomotion. Flamella tiara n. sp. (Flabellulidae) exhibits continuous changes in shape while in rapid motion but is more or less broadly arcate in steady slow progress. This amoeba is 30-40 |im wide, 12-25 |^m long, with many conical, papulate subpseudopodia extending from the body surface and leading edge. Adhesive, pseudo-uroidal filaments are trailed. An indistinct, spherical nucleus, about 3.5 (im, is present. The endoplasm is finely granular with no crystals. These two rarely encountered species occur as small populations and the present description will enable recognition by future researchers
