This paper presents a dynamic framework to analyze the impact of land utilization conversion charges as a tool for protecting the SPK4-10 farmland that received land title deeds from being converted into non-farmland. The analysis confirms that the optimal investment period of a land development project is further prolong by the application of a higher land utilization conversion charges. This paper applies an optimal development time method to keep SPK4-10 with land title deeds from being over-converted into other types of land use.

The predicted long-term inequality, led by Kuznets (1955), can be eventually reduced because of higher level of economic development. However, Piketty (2014) pointed out that more inequality is likely to occur instead. He also argued that share of income and wealth of the rich in the top income levels tend to be higher than a generation ago. This study, using the idea of social identity and redistribution introduced by Shayo (2009) and Lindqvist and Ostling (2013), investigates the dynamics of inequality in Thailand for three different periods: the early Rattanakosin prior to Bowring Treaty, the period during the reign of KingRama the fifth, and the current period. The results indicated that dynamics of income inequality in Thailand is consistent with the modified Kuznets curve. Multiple equilibria are also possible as suggested by Acemoglu and Robinson (2000, 2002), and some redistributive equilibria are sub-optima

This paper presents an analytical framework for solving dynamic land use problems under uncertainty. Landowners must choose both the optimal development time and the optimal type of land use, simultaneously, given future uncertainty. They will have to pay high land utilization adjustment cost if they make wrong decision. Therefore, landowners may need to keep some vacant lands as their options until sufficient information become available. Imposing high vacant land tax on landowner, as suggested by the approach of a static analysis, may likely fail to reduce the amount of vacant land as targeted.

    Urban land development under uncertainty

The study presents a simple dynamic stochastic model for urban land development under uncertainty. The main objective is to examine the developer\u27s optimal plans when he must choose both the development time and house type for each location. The study employs the following assumptions to limit the scope of interests: (i) there are n types of houses and households, (ii) housing rents follow geometric Brownian motion processes, (iii) developers are risk neutral and share common expectation, and (iv) households can move freely which implies that the model is an open city type. The study is able to obtain the optimal plans for house type and development time. In addition, it shows that urban sprawl can occur as a result of these optimal plans

Navigating urban mobility challenges through push and pull strategies

Sustainable transportation is a global target as stated in the Sustainable Development Goal 11: sustainable cities and communities. It mentions reducing the external costs of transport such as congestion, pollution, and global warming. This is particularly challenging in rapidly growing cities in low-to-medium-income countries (LMICs) because of increasing motorization rates fostered by factors unlike cities in high-income cities (HICs) such as city characteristics, infrastructure supply, and commuter behavior. Hence, the overarching aim of this dissertation is to resolve the main research question “How can a selection of sustainable transportation policies reduce the external cost of transport, specifically by alleviating urban road traffic congestion?”. I explore the policies by categorizing them into push and pull strategies and use Bangkok as the main study area for illustration. This dissertation makes a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge concerning sustainable urban transport policies building on the “Avoid – Shift – Improve” (A-S-I) framework with a focus on car-dependent megacities in LMICs, a field that remains empirically and notably underexplored. Chapter 2 explains that the common transport challenges in LMICs are rapid urbanization, increasing incomes, inadequate public transportation infrastructure, and poorly planned investments in transportation. These cities require specification on the link between city characteristics and multi-level policy harmonization in LMICs. The discussion elaborates into two pull strategies – improving the coverage of the urban rail system and promoting the use of shared pooled mobility, and two combining push strategies – pricing road use and charging for parking. Even though mass transits are proposed as a sustainable transport solution, the evaluation of the impact of urban rail transit expansion on the number of taxi trips in Chapter 3 through a quasi-experimental dataset (big taxi GPS data) and the two-way fixed effect (TWFE) difference-in-differences method is a previously uncharted territory. Since shared pooled mobility is a topic that represents the future of urban mobility, this dissertation offers an integrated exploration of the potential demand for shared pooled mobility in Chapter 4, associated climate benefits from shared pooled mobility using provincial-level data in China in Chapter 5, and the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration within shared pooled mobility in Chapter 6. Most importantly, we provide simulations on the welfare benefits of pricing car use in Chapter 7 – a key transport solution. While discussions surrounding congestion taxes have taken place globally, practical implementations have been limited, primarily observed in HICs like London, Stockholm, Milan, and Singapore. Furthermore, although parking fees are a well-established concept, they have often been empirically discussed in isolation from congestion-related measures. This holistic sustainable urban transport management approach seeks to address the limitations in the current discourse on urban transportation policies in LMICs. Singapore has proven that by transforming its policy planning approach from using the sectoral approach to holistic planning, cities can transition into the sustainable growth phase. However, Singapore is unique in its size and governance. Thus, this dissertation provides evidence useful for megacities in LMICs that are car-dependent and have low public transit modal share like Bangkok and many cities in China.

The study also reviews the sources of database and information systems in many best practice countries in order to recommend suitable catastrophic insurance and information management systems for Thailand. The study uses case studies of frequent catastrophic-hit countries such as Japan, Turkey, China, and the USA. The major problem regarding effective catastrophic insurance is the problem of market failure arising from supply and demand mismatches that lead to the problem of the cycle of catastrophic insurance. This causes market and private insurance companies to be unable to work effectively. The study also reviews the role of government in intervening and correcting market failure problems. Various forms of government interventions, depending on the degree of government involvement, are considered, and advantages and disadvantages are then compared. Potential management problems are also discussed. Based on the research findings, preliminary proposals to establish a catastrophic reinsurance fund are proposed, while fund details are issues for future research. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
