Critical Discourse Analysis for Material Development for English Language Teaching in a Thai Military Academic Context
Get PDFThis paper analyses critical perspective (CP) as one of the approaches to language teaching and learning in a Thai military academic context. Regarding related perspectives from critical race theory, identity studies, social justice and critical multiculturalism, the use of the pedagogy in a Thai context stresses empowering learners in a military school to think and act critically with the aim of transforming their life conditions and enhancement of their overall for their well being. Therefore, the present study aims to explore CP including pedagogies that support the problem posing with education in a specific context, a military school; and to offer suggestions for applying problem posing as a framework for developing materials in ELT classrooms. The preliminary analysis demonstrates that the CP, despite being a new and innovative approach, can be used in educational contexts to better understand how learners learn and position themselves in their context. The study suggests that critical perspectives implemented into EFL curriculum and classrooms practices in Thai contexts which will meet the needs of diverse students
Functions of English versus Other Languages in the Domain of Buddhism in Thailand
Get PDFThis study focuses on the functions of English versus other languages in a Thai Buddhist context. It demonstrates that English has an effect on religious practices and the use of English in the religious domain has been developed to serve the changing society. The framework for this study is based on a previous works on the language of Hindu rituals by Pandharipande (2012) and Herat (2015). It is stated that in the old days, English was excluded from Buddhist rituals in Thailand. Therefore, this paper attempts to highlight primarily research The Journal of Humanities Vol. 10 No.2 July – December 2018 99 data in a fact that: nowadays, English has an effect on religious practice and diffusion in a Thai context in some degree because (a) the media promotes it; and (b) it impacts the degree of functional load for the languages of rituals. The following research questions are examined: (1) What are the ways in which English and other languages work in the domain of Buddhism? (2) What are the main characteristics of languages and contents used by monks , scholars and other people regarding Buddhism? The content analysis was employed to focus on data analysis regarding language use in the domain of Buddhism which promotes some better understanding on religious practices. Further suggestions are made within the domain of World Englishes and functional use of languages
An Analysis of Attitudinal Resources in the Popular Thai Online Original Soundtrack,“Orchao-oey” (You) of the Period Soap Opera “Buppe San Nivas” (Love Destiny): Systemic Functional Linguistics and Appraisal Perspective
Get PDFVisual appraisal analysis has gained much attention from systemic functiona llinguists (Camelia et al,2016;Economou, 2009;Unsworth,2006) to discuss how images influence the multimodal texts and the visual and verbal appraisal systems are refined and extended (Ngo&Unworth, 2015). While such system addresses some aspects of visual semiosis, detailed analysis of attitudes is little studied in terms of images and verbal elements in a popular Thai period original soundtrack “Orchao-oey” (You) between February 2018 and April 2018, originated from the most famous soap opera, “Buppe San Nivas” (Lovedestiny). Therefore, this study analyses some distinctions of explicit visual inscription from a range of strategies for implicit invoking of attitudes in images underpinning the systemic functional linguistics and appraisal framework. The findings of the study reveal that the use of the distinctive affordances of visual, verbal resources and sound is much presented in the soundtrack concerned and appraisal resources of attitude which are mainly evoked visually and verbally. The study suggests some implications for further research in order to fulfill visual appraisal analysis and multimodal literacy pedagogies are also offered
English Clause Complex Analysis on Thai Lottery Rituals from the Perspective of SFL: Integration of Western Language Theory into Eastern World

According to their critics on Thai lottery rituals, the farangs (Westerners) may approach the subjects of Thai studies, but are unable to gain insight and intimacy. Therefore, this study attempts to apply SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics) for better understanding on Thai identity in a Thai context.To study SFL linguistic resources from this data, this paper discusses the meanings of clauses by a series of process that are combined in the logical process of the clauses. Theoretically, complex clauses can be combined through one of two logical semantic relationships: expansion or projection. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the English text on Thai lottery rituals from Thaisabai.org. Based on the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday 1985a, 1985b, 1994), the analysis revealed that there are two types of logical semantic relations: expansion and projection are embedded and realized in the text through a system of mutual dependence or taxis that can be divided into paratactic and hypotactic relations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
