RETAINING STYLE WITHOUT HARMING FIDELITY: A CASE OF TRANSLATING PAULINE METAPHORS
Get PDFThe objectives of this study are to legitimize the retention of metaphors in the translation when they do not harm meaning and dynamic fidelity, to assess renderings on the basis of their fidelity, and to suggest alternative renderings for the ones violating the fidelity. This study shows surprising findings. Applying Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) metaphorical concepts on Pauline metaphors, the researcher finds that many English and Indonesian metaphors have the same metaphorical concepts. This potentially makes the retention of the metaphors in the rendering meaningful or natural due to its match with the dynamic fidelity. The context of the meaningful metaphors, then, must be analyzed to determine the accuracy or meaning fidelity. This study echoes the notion that style is as important as meaning (Mahmkjer, 2004; Shi, 2006:10), even though Nida and Taber (1969) strongly suggest that meaning must be the top priority when it is in tension with style in their translation. To the translators, this study suggests not hastily discarding metaphors in the translation, replacing them with non-metaphors and, therefore, missing the significance of metaphors.Key words: metaphor, translation, fidelit

A SOCIO-PRAGMATIC STUDY OF PHATIC UTTERANCE IN MOVIE ENTITLED THE SECRET LIVE OF PETS
No full textThe research aimed to describe the phatic utterance functions expressed by the characters in themovie entitled The Secret Life of Pets. This was descriptive-qualitative research. The data of thestudy were the words, phrases, and clauses expressing the phatic utterances in the movie. Thedata collection technique was content analysis. The data analysis technique was ethnographic;therefore, domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural themeanalysis were carried out. The data was analyzed on the basis of the socio-pragmatic approach.The research showed that there were four functions of phatic utterances found in the movieentitled The Secret Life of Pets, namely breaking the silence, having small talks, keeping theconversation going, and expressing solidarity; the most dominant function was breaking thesilence. Breaking the silence as the dominant phatic utterance strengthened the notion thatphatic utterance was not informational. This dominance was closely related to the object of theresearch in which breaking the silence followed by having small talks were very important intheir everyday life.  Key words: socio-pragmatics, phatic utterances function

No full textEmotional isolation originates from traumatic experiences in a person’s past that are hiddenfrom consciousness and may cause problems during adulthood in the form of obsessive orcompulsive behaviors. These behaviors were portrayed in Philip Carey, the main character inWilliam Somerset Maugham’s novel Of Human Bondage. The research was qualitative, and thetechnique of collecting data was ethnographic. The approaches used were the psychologicalapproach and sociological approach. This research used psychoanalysis theory: personalprinciples and defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud, which contains about the conscious andunconscious side of humans and the application in their behavioral life. Emotional isolationbehaviors portrayed in Philip Carey were a self-conscious person, an introvert, an impulsive,and an attention seeker. Philip Carey’s abnormal behaviors occurred for some reasons. First, hedid not have parents taking care of him. Second, he had to live with his cruel and abusive uncle.He also became an object of bullying because of his clubfoot. These behaviors influenced PhilipCarey’s life. At first, he became self-conscious and delusional. Next, he failed to control his mostburdensome bondage: passion. Javanese Virtual Communication and Its Politeness Performance in Cyberpragmatics Perspective

The phenomenon contributes to a lucrative object of research in cyberpragmatics. Concerning this, the research aimed to explore the virtual politeness of the Javanese netizens in social media based on the cyberpragmatics approach. The discussion focused on how Javanese adopted the Javanese politeness principles in WhatsApp Group
(WAG). The observation method was employed to collect the data from the 3
WAGs of Javanese netizens of the 40s of age. All the conversational data were
transcribed for textual analysis. The data classification was based on the types
of speech acts. The semi-structured interview was applied as well to comprehend the perception of Javanese towards virtual politeness in WAG. The occurrence of virtual tokens was taken into consideration in the cyberpragmatics analysis. The result showed that Javanese politeness maxims were adopted in WAG conversations in a particular way. To this extent, the implementation of politeness maxims among Javanese netizens was not only a communicative strategy but also a representation of their cultural personality marker. Therefore, the violation of the politeness maxims would trigger a conflict. Perhaps, the result of the research would give insight into cultural communicative strategies in social media that is applicable for cross-cultural communication involving Javanese.
AMPLIFICATION AND REDUCTION IN THE MOVIE SUBTITLE ENTITLED 500 DAYS OF SUMMER
No full textIn subtitling, both reduction and amplification techniques are used even though, theoretically, reduction techniques are preferable because of space efficiency. This research aimed to analyze (1) the amplification techniques and (2) the reduction techniques movie subtitle in the movie entitled 500 Days of Summer. The data collection technique was document analysis. The documents analyzed were the ones containing theories on translation techniques, the English subtitle of 500 Days of Summer and the Indonesian subtitle of 500 Days of Summer. The result was that there were amplification techniques consisting of addition, explicitation, and paraphrase, in which the most dominant technique was explicitation. There were also reduction techniques consisting of implicitation, deletion, and concision, in which the most dominant technique was concision. No full textThe aim of this research was to describe cultural words in JK Rowling's novel entitled Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince and to analyze their translation techniques of them. The form of the data was language units, namely words, and phrases containing cultural words in the novel. The data were collected with document analysis. The findings were that all types of cultural words were found in Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, namely material culture, habits, organization, ecology, and social culture. The translation techniques that were used are established equivalent, pure borrowing, literal translation, adaptation, generalization, particularization, explicitation, paraphrase, addition, and modulation. TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES OF HUMOR PUNCHES IN "WEREWOLVES WITHIN" MOVIE
No full textA punch line is an unexpected and humorous conclusion to any show, situation, or story. This is the most crucial thing in humor. It must be retained in the translation. Therefore, the choice of translation technique must be more careful. This research was aimed at analyzing the type of translation techniques on each punch line in the Werewolves Within movie. In this research, the researcher applied Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques. This research was classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique is document analysis, namely by analyzing the movie subtitle entitled The Werewolves Within. The data analysis technique was ethnographic, namely by differentiating the data and non-data, taxonomizing them, analyzing their components, and analyzing their dominant findings. The results showed that ten out of twenty-four types of translation techniques were used in this research. The dominant type of translation technique was established equivalence, and the least one was addition, adaptation, implicitation, concision, particularization, modulation, and compensation.
