Alpheid shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda: Alpheidae) of Vietnam

    No full text
The present paper deals with a collection of alpheid shrimps from Vietnam received by Mr R. Serene, formerly Director the Institute of Oceanography, Nhatrang (Vietnam). Though small in size the material has proved to be fairly rich. It contains 23 species belonging to the genera Alpheopsis Coutiere, Synalpheus Bate and Alpheus Fabricius, the last named genus accounting for all but three species. Two new species, one each belonging to Alpheopsis and Alpheus, have been briefly described by the author (Tiwari, 1962) in an earlier paper. The remaining species are already known and some of them have an extensive distribution in the Indo-West-Pacific

An exploration of pharmacological and psychological interventions in patients with treatment-resistant affective disorders

Preface:The Mood and Anxiety Disorder Service in Southampton is a regional specialistservice for patients with complex and usually treatment-resistant affective disorders, which accepts referrals mainly from secondary care mental health services. Professor David Baldwin is the lead consultant for this service. He has clinical and research expertise in the identification, assessment and treatment of depressive illness and anxiety disorders, and is the lead author of evidence-based treatment guidelines for anxiety disorders.I have worked with Professor David Baldwin since 2008. Through his encouragement and support, I have undertaken a series of pharmacological and psychological interventions in patients with treatment-resistant affective disorders. My dual aims were to examine treatment recommendations within the Service, and to investigate the potential feasibility, effectiveness, and acceptability of non-pharmacological treatment options for groups of patients with severe treatment-resistant depression or generalised anxiety disorder (GAD): partly in the hope that this might inform the development of additional treatment interventions within the local services.Inspection of the medical records of patients referred to the tertiary services inSouthampton allowed an examination of currently offered pharmacological and psychological treatments. I realized that for most patients, and often over long periods of treatment in secondary care mental health services, there had been a lack of non-pharmacological treatments options apart from cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). This thesis includes a description of patients referred to the Service, including their demographic and clinical characteristics, and current and recommended treatments: and an account of the effectiveness and acceptability of two non-pharmacological group interventions, namely mindfulness-based CBT in patients with highly recurrent unipolar depressive disorder, and Yogic breathing in patients with treatment resistant GA

Critical Review of Shadang Paneeya: An Ayurvedic Herbal Formulation with Potential Immunomodulatory and Therapeutic Benefits

    No full text
Ayurveda, a time-honored system of medicine, is known for its holistic approach, incorporating dietary and medicinal practices to treat various ailments. Among its many formulations, Shadang Paneeya stands out for its therapeutic potential in managing fever, excessive thirst, and related symptoms. Described in classical texts like the Charaka Samhita, this preparation consists of six herbs with unique pharmacological properties that have been explored for immune modulation, detoxification, and managing febrile conditions. Objective: This review critically evaluates the components and therapeutic significance of Shadang Paneeya, focusing on its relevance in contemporary medicine, particularly its immune-modulatory and therapeutic properties. Methodology: A comprehensive review of classical Ayurvedic texts and modern literature on the immunomodulatory, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects of the ingredients in Shadang Paneeya- including Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Parpatak (Fumaria parviflora), Usheera (Vetiveria zizanoides), Chandana (Santalum album), Uddichya (Pavonia odorata), and Nagar (Zingiber officinale)- was conducted. Discussion & Conclusion: The synergistic effects of these six ingredients support Shadang Paneeya\u27s role in treating fever, dehydration, and inflammation. However, more clinical studies are needed to confirm its safety and efficacy, establishing it as a valuable adjunct in modern healthcare, particularly for viral infections

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30, 2020. There is currently no specific drug or targeted intervention available, and current therapy consists solely of symptomatic treatment and supportive care. Objective: The goals of this theoretical research, which grew out of this literature review, were to critically review Charakokta Mahakashaya in the management of respiratory system disorders w.s.r. COVID-19 pandemic and interpret its significance in the modern era. Methodology: The present work is primarily based on theoretical research using related research articles, standard textbooks of epidemiology and classical treatises of Ayurveda. Discussion: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed several challenges to the Indian healthcare system. In Ayurveda, the concept of epidemic was well defined under the heading of Janapadodhwansa. It has been discovered that deaths in COVID-19 were caused by a lack of immunity. The Rasayana drug, which provides passive immunity based on Ojas, antagonises the strength of disorders and prevents them. The AYUSH ministry has issued numerous guidelines regarding COVID-19 potential treatment, which must be statistically studied. Along with combating the current situation, objective assessment of the scientific plausibility of botanical interventions for prevention and treatment is critical, and the world\u27s scientific minds are expected to begin planning strategies for the future as well. Conclusion: To combat this pandemic, the prophylactic and therapeutic potential of traditional and complementary medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Yoga can be demonstrated as effective COVID-19 prophylaxis and adjuvant therapy

Health Determinants in Ayurveda: A Comprehensive Review of Concepts and Practices

    No full text
Ayurvedic philosophies are the concepts of "Swasthavritta," which encompass key determinants of health- diet, lifestyle, sleep, and mental well-being that maintain balance and prevent disease. In Ayurveda, health is defined as the harmonious integration of these factors, rather than simply the absence of illness. This review explores the foundational principles of Ayurvedic health determinants, examining their theoretical basis, clinical applications, and their potential contribution to modern healthcare systems. By addressing factors such as individual constitution (Prakriti), digestion (Agni), and emotional well-being, Ayurveda provides a personalized framework for preventing and managing chronic diseases. Incorporating Ayurvedic practices, including diet regulation, lifestyle modifications, and stress management, into contemporary medical paradigms could offer a more integrative and preventative approach to health. This paper highlights the potential of Ayurveda to complement modern healthcare practices by promoting patient-centered, holistic care that focuses on long-term wellness and disease prevention
