The Classics of the First Lorenzo de' Medici. For a New Critical Reading of Corinth
The present work aims to re-read one of Lorenzo de’ Medici’s first works, "Corinto", through the literary themes which characterize it, keeping in mind the Latin, Greek and Italian models on which the author draws and comparing others, pertinent to the themes analyzed. After a quick introduction to the historical context in which the poem fits, it is presented in terms of content and editorial history, detailed in the Appendix, where the reference texts are also presented. Thus follows the new critical reading. The reflection on the concept of classic and on Lorenzo as author and character of the poem concludes the analysis
Testing for international business cycles : a multilevel factor model with stochastic factor selection
The empirical literature on common international business cycles has largely ignored model misspecification in estimated factor models as the various cycles are typically imposed but not tested for. This paper proposes a Bayesian stochastic factor selection approach for multilevel factor models. The procedure is applied to a three-level dynamic factor model with a global factor, six regional factors and three development level factors. We estimate the factor model using real GDP growth data for a panel of 60 countries over the period 1961 - 2017. We find robust evidence for the presence of a global business cycle, four regional cycles (Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia) and two development level cycles (industrial countries and emerging market economies). This suggests that both geographical proximity and the development level of countries are important dimensions of international business cycle synchronization that should be considered simultaneously, a point not previously made in the existing synchronization literature. Measuring time-varying financial market integration: an unobserved component approach
We measure the time-varying degree of world stock market integration of five developed countries (Germany, France, UK, US, and Japan) over the period 1970:1-2011:10. Time-varying financial market integration of each country is measured through the conditional variances of the country-specific and common international risk premiums in equity excess returns. The country-specific and common risk premiums and their conditional variances are estimated from a latent factor decomposition through the use of state space methods that allow for GARCH errors. Our empirical results suggest that stock market integration has increased over the period 1970:1-2011:10 in all countries but Japan. And while there is a structural increase in stock market integration in four out of five countries, all countries also exhibit several shorter periods of disintegration (reversals), i.e. periods in which country-specific shocks play a more dominant role. Hence, stock market integration is measured as a dynamic process that is fluctuating in the short run while gradually increasing in the long run
A dynamic factor model with stochastic factor selection
We investigate the presence of international business cycles in macroeconomic aggregates (output, consumption, investment) using a panel of 60 countries over the period 1961 - 2014. The paper presents a Bayesian stochastic factor selection approach for dynamic factor models with predetermined factors. The literature has so far ignored model uncertainty in these models as common factors (i.e., global, regional or otherwise) are typically imposed but not tested for. We focus in particular on the existence of a global business cycle as the literature has, in our opinion unjustifiably, taken for granted its existence. In contrast to the literature, we find no evidence to support its presence

Pianificazione, EVA e valore: relazioni e meccanismi di feed-back.
The fight against malaria in Sardinia at the turn of the 20th Century: a lesson for the present
This article seeks to estimate the health burden of malaria in Sardinia between the last decades of the 19th Century and the first decades of the 20th Century, emphasizing the distinctive features of the disease in the island. The analysis illustrates the exceptional significance of malaria experience in Sardinia, due to the extremely high death risks among children caused by the epidemiological and seasonal characteristics of the disease. The authors also aim to analyse the effectiveness of the quinine campaign, which allowed a gradual reduction of mortality, without definitively defeating the disease. The partial failure of the health campaign was mainly due to the extreme poverty of the population, its low literacy, and the scarcity of health-infrastructures in the more rural and remote areas of the island. The article provides an analysis, as complete as possible based on the available documentation, of the demographic impact of malaria in the Sardinian health transition and offers, at the same time, a lesson for the current challenges in the poorest countries, showing that to defeat the disease it is essential to combat its social determinants
