Pott\'s Puffy Tumour: A Case Report

A 10-year-old girl presented with an episode of seizure following osteomyelitis of the frontal bone and subperiosteal abscess due to frontal sinusitis. CT scan confirmed osteomeyelitis of the frontal bone and subperiosteal abscess. At surgery, the subperiosteal abscess and contiguous subdural abscess was drained and sequestrectomy of the affected frontal bone done. Broad spectrum antibiotics and anticonvulsant were given for 4 weeks. The patient recovered without residual problems and has remained well at 5 years of follow up. Pott\'s puffy tumor is now relatively uncommon and associated seizure is unusual. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is necessary to avoid severe neurological complications and sequelae. Keywords: Pott\'s puffy tumour, frontal sinusitis, seizure Annals of African Medicine Vol. 7 (3) 2008: pp. 138-14

Miliary tuberculosis disease complicated by Pott′s abscess in an infant: Seven year follow-up

A 20-month-old boy presented with 1-year history of persistent fever, cough, and progressive abdominal distention. Abdominal ultrasonography showed hepatomegaly and multiple calcifications in the liver and spleen. Thoracic computed tomography showed multiple mediastinal lymph nodes and consolidation in both lungs. Additionally, there was a 2-cm thick retroperitoneal soft tissue mass destroying the T7-8 and L1-L2 vertebral bodies. The patient was preliminarily diagnosed with miliary tuberculosis (TB) and Pott′s disease, and began administering anti-TB treatment consisting of isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. Acid-resistant bacilli analysis and mycobacterial culture of the biopsy specimen of Pott′s abscess were positive. Mycobacterial culture and PCR of gastric aspirate were also positive. The patient′s condition progressively improved with anti-TB treatment and he received 12 months of antiTB therapy. At the end of the treatment all of the patient′s symptoms were relieved and he was well except for kyphosis. Miliary TB complicated by Pott′s abscess is a very rare presentation of childhood TB. The presented case shows that when Pott′s abscess is diagnosed and surgically corrected without delay, patients can recover without squeal

A sufficient condition for the boundedness of operator-weighted martingale transforms and Hilbert transform

Let W be an operator weight taking values almost everywhere in the bounded positive invertible linear operators on a separable Hilbert space H. We show that if W and its inverse W−1 both satisfy a matrix reverse Holder property introduced in [2], then the weighted Hilbert transform H : L2W(R,H) → L2W(R,H) and also all weighted dyadic martingale transforms Tσ: L2W(R,H) → L2W(R,H) are bounded. We also show that this condition is not necessary for the boundedness of the weighted Hilbert transform

Spinal tuberculosis (Pott`s disease) - a rare form of tuberculosis in children

    No full text
Introduction: Spinal tuberculosis (Pott`s Disease) is a secondary form of tuberculosis, which occurs in less than 1% of all infected patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The clinical presentation consist of osteomyelitis and arthritis, resulting in local destruction of the vertebral bodies, mainly in the thoracic region of the spine. Common complications are related to neurological impairment, kyphosis and gibbus formation. Methods and materials: We present a 4-year-old boy with normal physical and neurological development and no history of frequent infections. The child received Bacillus Calmette - Guérin (BCG) vaccine in the neonatal period but the local reaction and the induced immunity were not evaluated subsequently. In October 2017 the patient was admitted to St. Marina University Hospital with clinical evidence of persistent pneumonia and lower extremity paraparesis with muscular hypertonus, as well as hyperreflexia with expanded reflex receptive fields, clonus of the lower limbs and bilaterally positive Babinski sign. At the same time a tender, painful deformity in the interscapular region was present at hospitalization. Results: Diagnostic images revealed the presence of mediastinal and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy, significant paravertebral liquefaction in the thoracic region, destruction of vertebral bodies with spinal cord compression and formation of a gibbus. The Mantoux test was positive, the T-SPOT.TB test - negative, because of suppression of functional T-lymphocytes activity. Conclusion: Pott`s disease is a rare condition, but remains one of the most dangerous forms of secondary tuberculosis, due to the neurological complications. Regular vaccination and strict evaluation of the induced immunity are the most important part of the preventive strategy

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

    Non-Hogkins lymphoma ′masquerading′ as pott′s disease in a 13-year old boy: A case report

    No full text
Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of the lymphoid lineage which are broadly classified as either Hodgkin disease or as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Burkitt lymphoma, a variety of NHL, is most common in sub-Saharan Africa, where it accounts for approximately one half of childhood cancers. A case of paravertebral high grade non Hodgkin′s lymphoma (Lymphoblastic Lymphoma) ′masquerading′ as Pott′s disease in a 13-year old child is reported. A brief appraisal is provided of the clinical parameters of Burkitt′s lymphoma and strategies and challenges in its management

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
