Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
A statistical model for health care quality assessment
In the recent years, the interest in the quality measurement of a specific health care service has increased.
In particular, patient satisfaction ratings are used as health care quality markers and then as profitable competitive tools for health care management.
On the other hand, perceived quality of health care services has a great influence on patient behaviors.
In this context, statistical tools and techniques for assessing patients satisfaction in hospitals and other health care organizations are very useful.
In this paper, a case study on the service quality provided to the long-term cancer patients and the relationship between doctors and patients has been discussed.
In particular, a questionnaire has been submitted to a sample of long-term cancer patients, who follow a therapy at some hospitals belonging to the district of Lecce (Apulia Region).
Several dimensions of perceived service quality including tangible aspects, reliability, empathy (doctor-patient human relations) and hospital organization have been considered.
Statistical methodologies for customer satisfaction have been used in order to identify the service quality factors that are important to patients.
Moreover, multivariate statistical analysis has been performed in order to identify the service critical aspects to be improved and to determine significant associations between the selected dimensions and patients satisfaction
Asthma and allergic rhinitis in childhood: what's new
Novel approaches are currently offered for the diagnostic workup and therapeutic management of allergic rhinitis and asthma. New predictive biomarkers of allergy and asthma are available. Primary and secondary prevention, earlier intervention, and modification of the natural history of allergic rhinitis and asthma are being intensively investigated. This review highlights advances in the understanding of the etiology, diagnosis, and management of atopic airway diseases in childhood, as well as prenatal and early-life risk factors and strategies for prevention
Multilingualism constitutes an urgent objective for education, which needs to involve teachers and researchers at all levels if we are to promote effective and autonomous learning in the young. Like Daniela Zorzi, the author considers herself a socially engaged linguist, and in memory of her friend’s work, offers a reflection on the key roles of languages and cultures and of multilingualism for professional success and social welfare today
PM 10 Time Series Analysis Through Geostatistical Techniques
Particulate matter (PM) is an air pollutant comes from vehicular traffic, industrial activities
and street dust, or from the atmosphere, by transformation of the gaseous emissions. In
recent years the interest in the health effects of this pollutant have increased, since high
concentration levels in urban area have been measured.
Several studies suggest an association between fine particulate air pollution and the increase
of the mortality rate. In particular, PM up to 10 micrometers in size (PM10) could cause
negative health effects such as respiratory illness or cardiovascular problems. Hence, the
analysis of temporal evolution of this pollutant could be useful in decision-making process
for environmental policy.
Typically, in time series analysis, the Box-Jenkins methodology is widely applied and the
autocorrelation function (ACF) is used as a standard exploratory tool to identify the model
structure . In this context, the use of geostatistical techniques could also be convenient,
nevertheless these techniques are usually applied to analyze, through the variogram, spatial
relationships among sample data measured at some locations in a domain and to predict
the corresponding spatial phenomena
Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance
in terms of environmental planning and management.AlBan Programme - n. E05M053040B
