Testing normative and self-appraisal feedback in an online slot-machine pop-up in a real-world setting

    No full text
Over the last few years, there have been an increasing number of gaming operators that have incorporated on-screen pop-up messages while gamblers play on slot machines and/or online as one of a range of tools to help encourage responsible gambling. Coupled with this, there has also been an increase in empirical research into whether such pop-up messages are effective, particularly in laboratory settings. However, very few studies have been conducted on the utility of pop-up messages in real-world gambling settings. The present study investigated the effects of normative and self-appraisal feedback in a slot machine pop-up message compared to a simple (non-enhanced) pop-up message. The study was conducted in a real-world gambling environment by comparing the behavioral tracking data of two representative random samples of 800,000 gambling sessions (i.e., 1.6 million sessions in total) across two conditions (i.e., simple pop-up message versus an enhanced pop-up message). The results indicated that the additional normative and self-appraisal content doubled the number of gamblers who stopped playing after they received the enhanced pop-up message (1.39%) compared to the simple pop-up message (0.67%). The data suggest that pop-up messages influence only a small number of gamblers to cease long playing sessions and that enhanced messages are slightly more effective in helping gamblers to stop playing in-session

What pops out in positional priming of pop-out: insights from event-related EEG lateralizations

It is well established that, in visual pop-out search, reaction time (RT) performance is influenced by cross-trial repetitions versus changes of target-defining attributes. One instance of this is referred to as “positional priming of pop-out” (pPoP; Maljkovic and Nakayama, 1996). In positional PoP paradigms, the processing of the current target is examined depending on whether it occurs at the previous target or a previous distractor location, relative to a previously empty location (“neutral” baseline), permitting target facilitation and distractor inhibition to be dissociated. The present study combined RT measures with specific sensory- and motor-driven event-related lateralizations to track the time course of four distinct processing levels as a function of the target’s position across consecutive trials. The results showed that, relative to targets at previous target and “neutral” locations, the appearance of a target at a previous distractor location was associated with a delayed build-up of the posterior contralateral negativity wave, indicating that distractor positions are suppressed at early stages of visual processing. By contrast, presentation of a target at a previous target, relative to “neutral” and distractor locations, modulated the elicitation of the subsequent stimulus-locked lateralized readiness potential wave, indicating that post-selective response selection is facilitated if the target occurred at the same position as on the previous trial. Overall, the results of present study provide electrophysiological evidence for the idea that target location priming (RT benefits) does not originate from an enhanced coding of target saliency at repeated (target) locations; instead, they arise (near-) exclusively from processing levels subsequent to focal-attentional target selection

Pop music and characterisation in narrative film

This thesis discusses the use of pop songs in narrative films, with particular attention paid to their role in characterisation. My argument concerns the potential for pop to retain its specificity as a certain type of music whilst it carries out functions normally attributed to a composed score. Many commentators have assumed that, because a song may be known before it is used in a film, its narrative meanings are "pre-packaged". I combine an appreciation of pop music's propensity to come to a film already 'known' with an attempt to demonstrate how individual narratives ask songs to perform different affective roles. It is my contention that pop music's quality of 'knownness' is fundamental to its narrative affect in films, without, however, pre-determining that affect. I argue my case through close textual analysis, discussing the relationship between real-life pop stars' musical personas and the film characters they are asked to play, as well as offering numerous examples of songs without an on-screen performer becoming involved in processes of filmic narration

Of the people, by the people, for the people: in defense of American pop culture, its meaning, and its impact

    No full text
American pop culture has often been subjected to scorn and ridicule, both at home and abroad, often by those who view it as being immoral or who view it as not being “true” culture. This begs the questions of what exactly are the characteristics of American pop culture, why did it develop along the lines it has, and what are its sociological implications. One can examine the issue by delving into American history, and tracing how American mainstream thought has informed cultural practice. The results of such a study show that the characteristics of American pop culture were directly shaped by the ideals expressed in the American Revolution, and that American pop culture has often been at the heart of a generations-long push towards greater social freedom.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Avinash R. Marketing Approaches to Pop Up Stores: An Exploration of Social Networking

    No full text
Internet and mobile technologies are redefining how retailers promote themselves to consumers. For instance, over recent years, the high street has witnessed the phenomenon of ‘pop up stores’, which rely on social network sites (SNS) and text messaging to inform consumers of their presence. In essence, they are retail stores that open up at empty retail locations for a temporary period of time and then disappear. The purpose of this paper is to describe this trend in terms of which retailers are doing it, why, where and how are they doing it? In addition, the paper is theoretically underpinned by an examination of literature drawn from entrepreneurial marketing in order to explore how retailers have exploited internet and mobile technologies in order to create marketing and branding opportunities. Finally, the paper offers directions for future research

Human frontal eye fields and spatial priming of pop-out

"Priming of pop-out" is a form of implicit memory that facilitates detection of a recently inspected search target. Repeated presentation of a target's features or its spatial position improves detection speed (feature/spatial priming). This study investigated a role for the human frontal eye fields (FEFs) in the priming of color pop-out. To test the hypothesis that the FEFs play a role in short-term memory storage, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied during the intertrial interval. There was no effect of TMS on either spatial or feature priming. To test whether the FEFs are important when a saccade is being programmed to a repeated target color or location, TMS was applied during the search array. TMS over the left but not the right FEFs abolished spatial priming, but had no effect on feature priming. These findings demonstrate functional specialization of the left FEFs for spatial priming, and distinguish this role from target discrimination and saccade-related processes. The results suggest that the left FEFs integrate a spatial memory signal with an evolving saccade program, which facilitates saccades to a recently inspected location

Opinnäytetyössämme suunnittelimme pop up -konseptin suomalaiselle vaatealan yritykselle R-Collectionille. Konsepti perustuu muunneltaviin kaluste-elementteihin, joilla voidaan muodostaa erilaisia tiloja. Istutimme konseptin kolmeen erikokoiseen esimerkkisijaintiin havainnollistaaksemme konseptin muokattavuutta. Rakensimme myyntikalusteesta prototyypin, jonka osia ja toimivuutta visualisoimme kuvallisin keinoin. Perehdyimme työssämme myös mielikuviin ja niiden muodostumiseen. Lopuksi otimme kantaa konseptin jatkokehitysmahdollisuuksiin. The subject of our thesis was the design and creation of a retail pop up -concept for R-Collection, a Finnish clothing company. The concept is based on adjustable furniture elements which can be used to build different kinds of spaces. The main goal was to design an assemblable and portable retail concept. The building elements are functionally and visually compatible with the appearance of the R-Collection brand. The company’s brand attributes were the basis of our design. Our thesis presents all the parts of the popup concept as a whole and their principal function. We have utilized three location varying in size to demonstrate the adaptability of the concept. We have also built a prototype of the furniture element. Through pictorial means we want to demonstrate its parts and function. We also became familiar with brand images and how they develop in our minds. In conclusion, we consider some further developmental possibilities for this concept

Biodetoxification and Protective Properties of Probiotics

    No full text
Probiotic consumption is recognized as being generally safe and correlates with multiple and valuable health benefits. However, the mechanism by which it helps detoxify the body and its anti-carcinogenic and antimutagenic potential is less discussed. A widely known fact is that globalization and mass food production/cultivation make it impossible to keep all possible risks under control. Scientists associate the multitude of diseases in the days when we live with these risks that threaten the population’s safety in terms of food. This review aims to explore whether the use of probiotics may be a safe, economically viable, and versatile tool in biodetoxification despite the numerous risks associated with food and the limited possibility to evaluate the contaminants. Based on scientific data, this paper focuses on the aspects mentioned above and demonstrates the probiotics’ possible risks, as well as their anti-carcinogenic and antimutagenic potential. After reviewing the probiotic capacity to react with pathogens, fungi infection, mycotoxins, acrylamide toxicity, benzopyrene, and heavy metals, we can conclude that the specific probiotic strain and probiotic combinations bring significant health outcomes. Furthermore, the biodetoxification maximization process can be performed using probiotic-bioactive compound association
