First person – Poonam Sehgal
ABSTRACT
First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Poonam Sehgal is the first author on ‘Epidermal growth factor receptor and integrins control force-dependent vinculin recruitment to E-cadherin junctions’, published in Journal of Cell Science. The work in this article was carried out while Poonam was a postdoc in the lab of Dr Deborah Leckband at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA, investigating the mechanism of E-cadherin-mediated force-transduction signaling in epithelial cells.</jats:p
Poonam Gulati Salhotra oral history interview and transcript
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.Dr. Poonam Gulati Salhotra was born in a small town called Malakpur in India to a traditional family. Her father was a civil servant for the Indian government, and her mother was a homemaker. When she was 11, the family immigrated to the US along with her younger brother. Coming from a traditional culture in India and religious faith in Hinduism, the family’s culture shock back then included seeing women wearing nothing but bikinis by the swimming pool. Poonam also struggled with the American dating culture and going to the prom in high school. Although she was not allowed to attend her high school prom, she advocated for her younger brother who in the end, was allowed to attend his prom. Later on, she pursued a PhD in microbiology, and has been arranged by her family, and married his husband, Atul, for over 30 years. Now she directs the Center for Community Engagement and service learning at University of Houston downtown, and maintains a research lab as well as her role in teaching. The family has two children, one son and one daughter, both in their 20s

Proposed Optimal Orthogonal New Additive Model (POONAM)
In this paper, the proposed optimal orthogonal new additive model (POONAM) is shown to remain more efficient than the recent additive model introduced by Gjestvang and Singh (2009). Several situations where the POONAM estimator shows efficiency over the Gjestvang and Singh (2009) model are simulated and investigated
