Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Abstract: Sleep bruxism is a rhythmic jaw muscle activity, while snoring is defined as audible vibrations of the upper airways produced during breathing. Although the association between these conditions has been studied in the literature, there are still gaps. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the association between sleep bruxism and snoring in adult individuals. Two studies were conducted: 1) a descriptive study; 2) an observational study with data from a population-based sample. The first study included individuals referred for polysomnography (PSG) at Baia Sul Hospital in Florianópolis. Data were collected using questionnaires, clinical evaluation, and polysomnography results. Statistical analysis was performed using the Jamovi software. The association between sleep bruxism and snoring was not significant (p>0.05). Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regressions were performed regarding sleep periods (REM, NREM, and total sleep time). The dependent variable was sleep bruxism. During REM sleep, adjusted logistic regression showed that snoring is associated with episodes of sleep bruxism. Age, sex, and body mass index classification were not associated with sleep bruxism. Regarding other sleep periods, logistic regression was not considered significant. Other variables related to sleep architecture, as well as sleep quality and drowsiness, were not associated with sleep bruxism. The second study used data from the third edition of the EPISONO study, a population-based study conducted in São Paulo in 2007. The sample included 502 adult individuals without obstructive sleep apnea. Data were collected using questionnaires, clinical evaluation, and polysomnography results. Statistical analysis was performed using the Jamovi program. The association between sleep bruxism and snoring was not significant (p>0.05). Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regressions were performed regarding the severity of sleep bruxism. The dependent variable was sleep bruxism. Adjusted logistic regression indicated an association between anxiety symptoms and mild sleep bruxism. Adjusted logistic regression was also used to assess sleep variables, demonstrating that the duration of REM sleep was associated with sleep bruxism. In the first study, snoring was associated with episodes of sleep bruxism during the REM period. There was no association between sleep bruxism and sex, age, body mass index, sleep architecture-related variables, sleep quality, or drowsiness. In conclusion to the second study, anxiety symptoms and REM sleep duration may be associated with sleep bruxism. However, sleep bruxism and snoring, smoking, and alcohol consumption were not associated. Additionally, there was no association between sleep bruxism and variables related to sleep architecture. As a conclusion of the thesis, it is possible to highlight the complexity of sleep bruxism, presenting an association with snoring in a descriptive sample, and an association with anxiety symptoms and percentage of REM sleep in an observational study with data from a population sample

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro de Ciências da Saúde. Odontologia. Purpose. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the association between sleep bruxism (SB) and anxiety symptoms in adults. Methods. Studies assessing SB by means of questionnaires, clinical examination, and/or polysomnography (PSG), and validated questionnaires to assess anxiety, were included. Search strategies were developed for seven main electronic databases and for three gray literature databases. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies and confidence in cumulative evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation criteria. Results. Five cross-sectional studies were included, of which four were judged with low and one with moderate risk of bias. No association with probable SB was observed in two studies that invastigated generic levels of anxiety. One paper evaluated generic anxiety levels through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and a positive association was observed with probable SB in both STAI-1 (p=0.030) and STAI-2 (p=0.010) subscales. Two studies assessed specific symptoms of anxiety using the panic-agoraphobic spectra evaluation (PAS-SR) questionnaire. Significantly higher PAS-SR total scores were observed in both studies with regard to SB. No study with definitive diagnosis of SB was identified. Conclusion. Evidence from properly designed studies, to credit or discredit an association between SB and generic symptoms of anxiety in adults, is still insufficient

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Abstract: Aim: To synthesize and critically review the association between sleep bruxism (SB) and stress symptoms in adults. Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis (MA) was performed. The search was completed using seven electronic databases in addition to a gray literature search. Two reviewers blindly selected studies based on pre-defined eligibility criteria. Studies that associated SB (possible, probable and definite) with self-reported stress symptoms and biomarkers through validated methods were included. Risk of bias of the included articles was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical CrossSectional Studies. RevMan 5.4 (Review Manager 5.4, The Cochrane Collaboration) was used to perform the MA and to generate the figures. Cumulative evidence was evaluated according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). Results: Nine studies were included for qualitative analysis, of which three were also included for quantitative analysis. Two studies presented low risk of bias and seven were assessed with moderate risk of bias. Cumulative evidence was classified as very low for all outcomes. Individuals with SB were found to have higher levels of some self-reported stress symptoms as assessed through questionnaires. Epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, adrenaline, dopamine and noradrenaline levels showed a positive association with SB. Conclusions: Although some associations were identified between SB and self- reported stress symptoms and biomarkers of stress in adults, given that the quality of evidence was found to be very low, caution should be exercised in interpreting these results. These findings suggest that additional and better designed studies are warranted in order to clarify the link between SB and stress

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
