Institutional economics analysis of contractual arrangements; managing wildlife and landscape on Dutch farms
This thesis focused on land use in which agriculture is combined with wildlife and landscape management. The objective of the study was to analyse the design of contractual arrangements for wildlife and landscape management by farmers. An important method used in this thesis was a literary approach combined with statistical tools using data from mail surveys. The literary approach is based on theory and makes use of close reasoning. Other methods used were formal models concerning the decision to contract and the consequences of contracting at the farm level. This thesis has concentrated on the supply side, especially on the institutional organisation. The research focussed on institutional aspects of wildlife and landscape management and contributed to the study of wildlife and landscape because it helps to establish a link between supply and demand. This study has shown that contractual arrangements and environmental co-operatives are suitable arrangements for the provision of wildlife and landscape, and that they deserve attention from the viewpoint of empirical science as well as of policy makers
An in-situ TEM study of the effects of 6 keV He ion irradiation on Si and SiO2
Using the new MIAMI facility (Microscope and Ion Accelerators for Materials Investigations) at the University of Huddersfield, an in-situ TEM study has been carried out on the effects of helium implantation on a tri-layer system consisting of monocrystalline silicon (c-Si), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si). Co-irradiation of these three components enabled direct comparisons to be made of differences between the response of c-Si and poly-Si to the He irradiation; in particular, differences in the development of interstitial clusters and bubbles and eventual amorphisation. For implantations to high fluences (>1017 ions/cm2), very significant levels of porosity were observed to build up in the Si, leading to changes in the width of the Si layers of up to 29% Although no helium bubbles were formed in the SiO2 layer, a very significant dimensional change (but in this case an observed shrinkage) also occurred in this material. Finally, room temperature amorphisation of the Si was observed at high fluences, beginning at somewhat lower fluences in the poly-Si than in the c-Si. A brief discussion of the origins of these effects is presented.</p
Utilizing Eye Tracking Technology to Promote Students' Metacognitive Awareness of Visual STEM Literacy
During a two-week summer camp designed to promote student visual, scientific, and data literacy through infographics, our team developed a curricular component involving viewing infographics while being recorded by an eye-tracking machine. Students viewed data collected by the eye-tracker and reflected on their own process of visual engagement. This activity enabled students to gain metacognitive awareness of their own perceptual and interpretive processes, supporting their performance during the rest of the summer camp
DIRECT EXPERIMENTAL-EVIDENCE FOR TRAP-STATE MEDIATED EXCITATION OF ER3+ IN SILICON
The time evolution of the 1.54 mu m Er3+ photoluminescence intensity of Er-doped silicon following a 30 mu s excitation pulse is investigated. It is found that at 9 K, the 1.54 mu m luminescence from Er3+ continues to increase up to 50 mu s after the pulse is terminated, when excess photocarriers no longer exist. This provides the first direct experimental evidence that a state in the forbidden gap of silicon acts as the gateway to the excitation of Er3+. Further analysis indicates recombination of bound excitons to be the most likely excitation mechanism. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Expanding “Communities and Collections” in the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx) to benefit the K-State Community and Beyond
Kansas State University has used its institutional repository, the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx), to store and share its first year experience program, K-State First, and notably its common reading program, K-State First Book. We have done so with the aim that the accessibility and preservation of these documents ensures program stability, promotes engagement with first year programming, and provides the ability to foster growth,educational opportunities, and community building outside of K-State. Moving away from research concentrated repositories and taking a more holistic approach to scholarship, especially when realizing the pedagogical significance of collaborative campus programming, institutions can showcase, discover, preserve, and grow programs that shape campus communities and engagement.
This session will provide an overview of K-REx and spotlight the digital archive of the university’s first year experience program and common reading program, K-State First Book. We will discuss the benefits and challenges to expanding the purview of your repositories. We talkthrough the types of materials we decide to host in our repository and why we share what we do. We will also provide recommendations on new ways to evaluate what belongs in institutional repositories and how this diversity can benefit your program, your institution, the community, and others
