Food Assistance in Nordic Welfare states – Questions of Ambiguity and Dignity [Elektronisk resurs]
Forsa conference 2024: Social Work as Emancipatory Practice (17-19 juni) Abstracts to Symposium to Conference theme Social welfare and poverty General abstract [Pollari, Salonen, Leo Sandberg, Söderberg, Linde] Food Assistance in Nordic Welfare states – Questions of Ambiguity and Dignity Milja Pollari, Anna Sofia Salonen, Elinn Leo Sandberg, Maria Söderberg, Stig Linde (corresponding author/symposium convener), researchers from University of Eastern Finland and Lund University in a newly started Nordic research network on food assistance. Access to food has been taken for granted in Nordic welfare states. When food assistance emerged in Finland during the recession of the 1990s, it was not seen as fitting the ethos of the welfare state. However, this has now changed, also in Sweden, as many faith-based civil society organizations, such as City Missions, have become increasingly important actors in combating food poverty by distributing food. This change raises questions about the right to food and whobears the responsibility. A new framework has also emerged that links food assistance to the fight against food waste. Previous studies on food aid in high-income countries show various experiences of deservingness and social and personal shame. The symposium aims to bring together diverse voices on food assistance. In two papers, the voices of food recipients have been documented and analyzed, and one paper is based on the perspective of the professionals involved in food assistance. At an overall level, the analysis shows that not only the visitors but also the professionals themselves were affected by the exposed situation of the visitors. We can describe diverse approaches employed by professionals in safeguarding the dignity of visitors. Relating to the conference theme, on a societal scale, the various types of food aid provided by civil society organizations risk shifting the focus to short-term solutions rather than to underlying factors contributing to both food poverty and food waste. This observation calls for envisioning alternative ways to ensure the right to food

GRAD KAO PALIMPSEST: VIDLJIVA I NEVIDLJIVA URBANA MEMORIJA “STUDENTSKOG TRGA” U BEOGRADU
The New heritage paradigm is changing the way in which the past is valued and affirming the pluralised and user-oriented presentation of visible and invisible urban memory. The assumption of the paper is that reading the city as a palimpsest can be the basis for a democratic heritage presentation and a multivocal and multitemporal understanding of the past by unveiling the visible and invisible layers of urban memory. The question arises to what extent traditional formats of heritage presentation in public spaces can respond to these demands. This paper aims to explain the concept and method of reading the city as a palimpsest and to demonstrate its application in the case of Students Square in Belgrade to discover and unveil invisible urban memory, while critically reviewing the traditional presentation formats and their ability to adequately present it in public spaces. The results of the research confirm the potential of the palimpsest method and point to a selective approach and physical limitations of traditional formats to present the complexity of urban memory in urban public spaces.
Abstract
Food waste is a complex ecological, social, and ethical issue. However, it has not been much discussed in the field of diaconal research. Particularly little attention has been paid to the household perspective, despite the fact that households are the most affected by food waste and that families are a key context for diaconal work. In this study, we look at household food waste in the context of intergenerational interactions. The data for this study consists of individual and group interviews with a total of 42 people in Finland and Canada. The results suggest that food waste issues are negotiated as part of food education in a way that involves two conflicting ideals. The first of these, avoiding throwing food waste, is crystallized in particular in the invitation to finish one's plate. The second ideal is linked to the pursuit of balanced food consumption and involves avoiding the requirement to finish one's plate. The tensions between these two ideals reflect changing educational ideals about food between generations. In addition to ideals, the results also suggest that food waste is associated with practices that create intergenerational friction. People often do not challenge food waste ideals and practices openly, but rather subtly. Navigating and negotiating food waste does not dismantle prevailing ideals but shows both their strength and their contradictions. The production of food waste is not only a problem, but also a form of resistance and creative action, and even a condition of gentle education. Understanding this complexity is essential to supporting households towards more sustainable food consumption
Pasijon Johna Coffeyja: Krščanski simboli in rasni elementi v Zelena milja
In the thesis I explore the presence of Christian and racial elements in Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile. The first chapter describes some basic theories of Christianity and its history as a background to the events and situations depicted in King’s novel and film. The second chapter analyzes how Christian elements have been integrated into literature by other famous authors, to form a comparison with King’s use of these motifs. The main analysis is made in the third chapter, where Christian elements in the novel are identified and parallels are drawn back to the theory of Christianity, especially regarding the character John Coffey as a Christ figure. The thesis also discusses the importance of the religious background of the author while I try to form a generalized interpretation of the novel. In addition, the film adaptation serves as a source for the analysis of visual elements of Christianity. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on racial elements in the novel. These elements are then connected to the history of racial relationships in the United States and reflected in African-American literature, compared to that of white authors such as King, and a connection is made between the racial and religious elements of the novel as they combine to illustrate important themes in American society.Magistrsko delo z naslovom Pasijon Johna Coffeyja: Krščanski simboli in rasni elementi v Zelena milja raziskuje navzočnost krščanskih in rasnih simbolov v romanu Stephena Kinga Zelena milja.
The transformative potential of textbooks: Food waste knowledge and pedagogical text styles in Finnish Home Economics, Geography, and Biology textbooks
Education is recognized as crucial in addressing unsustainable practices, such as food waste. One of the aims of interdisciplinary food education in basic education is to promote sustainable food waste behavior, which can be promoted by transformative learning. This study examined how food waste is addressed in nine Finnish basic education textbooks. The content related to food waste and the pedagogical style of the texts were analyzed from home economics, biology, and geography textbooks designed for secondary level education (grades 7–9, age 13–16). The results were analysed to assess their potential to promote transformative learning. All of the textbooks approached the topic of food waste from the perspective of their own subject, and none presented it as an interdisciplinary phenomenon. Home economics textbooks focused on students\u27 perspectives, emphasizing food waste reduction and waste sorting. Geography textbooks frequently explored the topic in the context of the food supply chain or at a global level, while biology textbooks primarily addressed the sorting of food waste. The textbooks primarily used a neutral text style focusing on information transmission. In some contexts, a persuasive style was employed to encourage critical thinking and action. The participative style, which encourages active student engagement, was utilized the least in all textbooks, and primarily for exercises. By integrating learning-supportive text styles (such as participative and persuasive), including student tasks related to food waste, and fostering an interdisciplinary understanding of food waste, textbooks have the potential to transform student learning and engagement in sustainable food practices
