Experiencing and Responding to Crisis: Layered Discourses and Hybrid Epistemologies in Early Modern English Culture

    No full text
This chapter explores, with reference to several primary texts, a deep epistemic crisis in English culture of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century and proposes to observe it from the angle of its complex discursive stratifications. In several texts of this period we register a mixture of two or more disciplinary codes, a fact that can be seen both as symptom of crisis and as a strategy of coping with intense cultural conflicts. Textual references to works by Shakespeare, John Donne, Sir Thomas Browne, John Dee, Sir Francis Bacon, Joseph Glanvill, John Wallis, and Robert Boyle are discussed to illustrate the fact that, in this age of profound transitions, mathematicians speak like mystics or divines, scientists like religious authorities and vice versa, rhetoricians like political advisers, and so forth. This intense hybridization of disciplinary codes and perspectives allows us to perceive crisis as a salutary malady of culture, a moment in which new cultural challenges in philosophy, religion, science, and politics were successfully met

Clio – Mnemosyne – Europa.

The Reality of TV News: Towards a Narratological News Theory

By bridging the basic concepts of News Theory and Narratology, he shows that the news has no choice other than to narrate. Those narratives are independent from categories such as facticity and fiction, and they might even contribute to the claim of authenticity within the News itself. In detailed analyses Bietz develops a narratology of telemedial news and fundamentally challenges the conventional approaches of News Theory with its claim of objectivity

Robert Menasse’s Die Hauptstadt (The Capital), published in 2017, was immediately awarded with the prestigious Deutscher Buchpreis and considered as an unequivocal success for the author in the German-speaking and above all European literary field. The seven members of the jury highlighted that in his novel Menasse digs “with a light hand into the deeper strata of this world that we call our own” and they praised the book as “a multilayered text that interweaves existential questions on the private and political spheres in a masterly fashion, and releases the reader into open-endedness” (Peschel 2017

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Mandy Merck‘s edited volume The British monarchy on screen comprises seventeen articles dealing with the multifaceted layers of media representation of the British monarchy. Its sections are devoted to studying topics covering the interactions between monarchy and media in Victorian times as well as the role of the empire and commonwealth relations within filmic depictions of the monarchy, leading to forms of popular participation in royal events and contemporary Anglophone cinematic takes on the British monarchy. The collection thus offers new perspectives on an ancient institution whose popularity indicates its enduring importance for British culture and society. The thematic and material diversity in conjunction with the methodological clarity of the featured contributions offers an interesting read, providing several points of departure for fruitful future research both in the realm of media studies and royal studies
