Optical concept of a compressor for XUV pulses in the attosecond domain

    No full text
The design of a grating compressor for attosecond pulses in the extreme-ultraviolet region is presented. The instrument adopts a double-grating configuration with grazing-incidence gratings in the off-plane mount. The configuration preserves the length of the optical paths of the different rays coming from the source at the same wavelength, while it realizes a controlled dispersion of the length of the optical paths of rays at different wavelengths. The corresponding group-delay dispersion can be either positive or negative, depending on the geometry of the system. As a test case, the application to the compression of an attosecond pulse in the 50-100 eV region is discussed

Stability Analysis of Uniformly Fluidized-beds In Terms of the Elastic-modulus of the Dispersed Phase

    No full text
Theoretical criteria defining the transition from bubble free to ordinarily bubbling beds have been examined on the basis of results of a number of experimental studies reported in the literature. It is suggested that the various theoretical approaches may be compared by considering the values of elastic modulus of the dispersed phase determined using each approach. Theoretical approaches based solely on gas-particle interactions do not generally agree with the experimental results. Further studies on the structure of constitutive equations of elastic moduli, and their validation by means of critical experiments are required to evaluate possible effects of particle to particle cohesive forces on bubble free gas fluidization

Age and postmenopausal state relsted risk of axial bone demineralization in goitrous women treated with L-Tiroxine : Longitudinal study

The demineralizing effect of L-thyroxine (L-T4) treatment at lumbar spine level was prospectively evaluated in 27 nontoxic goiter women (14 premenopausal, 13 postmenopausal; age 34-65 years) before and after one year of therapy. All the patients admitted had normal densitometric parameters for age and sex. The L-T4 dose was adjusted to reduce circulating TSH without suppressing it below the limit of sensitivity of the method, and to maintain FT3 and FT4 within normal range throughout treatment. At the control after therapy, mean densitometric parameters were decreased; in particular, the mean bone mineral density (BMD) percentage change was -1.85 [2.6]%, a decrease not significantly different from the expected change due to the physiological rate of bone loss at lumbar spine. However, a relevant individual variability was observed, with an annualized BMD decrease > 3.0%, suggestive of increased risk of osteoporosis, in 5 out of 27 women. By logistic regression analysis, the elevated BMD decrease (> 3.0% year) was positively correlated with age and postmenopausal state, but not with other parameters examined (body mass index, TSH levels during treatment, bone Gla-protein, L-T4 daily dose pro kg, L-T4 cumulative dose). Our longitudinal study indicates that thyroid hormone treatment, even when complete suppression of circulating TSH is avoided, can significantly increase the risk of spinal demineralization in aged and/or postmenopausal subjects. Conversely, the treatment with not completely suppressive doses of L-T4 was effective in reducing goiter size in a proportion of patients (48%) comparable to previous reports obtained with higher doses of L-T4

Infection propagator approach to compute epidemic thresholds on temporal networks: impact of immunity and of limited temporal resolution

    No full text
The epidemic threshold of a spreading process indicates the condition for the occurrence of the wide spreading regime, thus representing a predictor of the network vulnerability to the epidemic. Such threshold depends on the natural history of the disease and on the pattern of contacts of the network with its time variation. Based on the theoretical framework introduced in [E. Valdano, L. Ferreri, C. Poletto, V. Colizza, Phys. Rev. X 5, 21005 (2015)] for a susceptible-infectious-susceptible model, we formulate here an infection propagator approach to compute the epidemic threshold accounting for more realistic effects regarding a varying force of infection per contact, the presence of immunity, and a limited time resolution of the temporal network. We apply the approach to two temporal network models and an empirical dataset of school contacts. We find that permanent or temporary immunity do not affect the estimation of the epidemic threshold through the infection propagator approach. Comparisons with numerical results show the good agreement of the analytical predictions. Aggregating the temporal network rapidly deteriorates the predictions, except for slow diseases once the heterogeneity of the links is preserved. Weight-topology correlations are found to be the critical factor to be preserved to improve accuracy in the prediction
