    Interpretation of human pointing by African elephants : generalisation and rationality

    This research was carried out with funding from a departmental studentship from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience of the University of St Andrews, awarded to AFS.Factors influencing the abilities of different animals to use cooperative social cues from humans are still unclear, in spite of long-standing interest in the topic. One of the few species that have been found successful at using human pointing is the African elephant (Loxodonta africana); despite few opportunities for learning about pointing, elephants follow a pointing gesture in an object-choice task, even when the pointing signal and experimenter’s body position are in conflict, and when the gesture itself is visually subtle. Here, we show that the success of captive African elephants at using human pointing is not restricted to situations where the pointing signal is sustained until the time of choice: elephants followed human pointing even when the pointing gesture was withdrawn before they had responded to it. Furthermore, elephants rapidly generalised their response to a type of social cue they were unlikely to have seen before: pointing with the foot. However, unlike young children, they showed no sign of evaluating the ‘rationality’ of this novel pointing gesture according to its visual context: that is, whether the experimenter’s hands were occupied or not.Peer reviewe

    Multi-level fine pointing test-bed for space applications

    For space applications that need high accuracy pointing of the payload, fine pointing system is an indispensable tool. To reach high level of high accuracy pointing and tracking, proper synchronization between the attitude of the satellite and each stage of the pointing module should be considered. This study focuses on developing and demonstrating staging control for fine pointing system. Currently, an experimental model for multi-stage control has been built in the laboratory to be used as a testbed and a teaching tool to validate the control strategies. This paper gives a brief introduction of the study, experimental model design criteria and staging control strategy. An example of a controller synthesis for multi-stage actuators based on Hinfinity is also presented

This work addresses the question on how pragmatic factors affect content distribution between the modalities speech and gesture. This is done by analyzing a study on deictic pointing gestures to objects under two conditions: with and without speech. The relevant pragmatic factor was the distance to the referent object. As one main result two strategies were identified which were used by participants to adapt their gestures to the condition. This knowledge can be used, e.g., to improve the naturalness of pointing gestures employed by embodied conversational agents

    Domestic dogs use contextual information and tone of voice when following a human pointing gesture

    Domestic dogs are skillful at using the human pointing gesture. In this study we investigated whether dogs take contextual information into account when following pointing gestures, specifically, whether they follow human pointing gestures more readily in the context in which food has been found previously. Also varied was the human's tone of voice as either imperative or informative. Dogs were more sustained in their searching behavior in the 'context' condition as opposed to the 'no context' condition, suggesting that they do not simply follow a pointing gesture blindly but use previously acquired contextual information to inform their interpretation of that pointing gesture. Dogs also showed more sustained searching behavior when there was pointing than when there was not, suggesting that they expect to find a referent when they see a human point. Finally, dogs searched more in high-pitched informative trials as opposed to the low-pitched imperative trials, whereas in the latter dogs seemed more inclined to respond by sitting. These findings suggest that a dog's response to a pointing gesture is flexible and depends on the context as well as the human's tone of voice

    A comparison of feedback cues for enhancing pointing efficiency in interaction with spatial audio displays

    An empirical study that compared six different feedback cue types to enhance pointing efficiency in deictic spatial audio displays is presented. Participants were asked to select a sound using a physical pointing gesture, with the help of a loudness cue, a timbre cue and an orientation update cue as well as with combinations of these cues. Display content was varied systematically to investigate the effect of increasing display population. Speed, accuracy and throughput ratings are provided as well as effective target widths that allow for minimal error rates. The results showed direct pointing to be the most efficient interaction technique; however large effective target widths reduce the applicability of this technique. Movement-coupled cues were found to significantly reduce display element size, but resulted in slower interaction and were affected by display content due to the requirement of continuous target attainment. The results show that, with appropriate design, it is possible to overcome interaction uncertainty and provide solutions that are effective in mobile human computer interaction

    Dogs (Canis familiaris), but not chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), understand imperative pointing

    Chimpanzees routinely follow the gaze of humans to outside targets. However, in most studies using object choice they fail to use communicative gestures (e.g. pointing) to find hidden food. Chimpanzees' failure to do this may be due to several difficulties with this paradigm. They may, for example, misinterpret the gesture as referring to the opaque cup instead of the hidden food. Or perhaps they do not understand informative communicative intentions. In contrast, dogs seem to be skilful in using human communicative cues in the context of finding food, but as of yet there is not much data showing whether they also use pointing in the context of finding non-food objects. Here we directly compare chimpanzees' (N = 20) and dogs' (N = 32) skills in using a communicative gesture directed at a visible object out of reach of the human but within reach of the subject. Pairs of objects were placed in view of and behind the subjects. The task was to retrieve the object the experimenter wanted. To indicate which one she desired, the experimenter pointed imperatively to it and directly rewarded the subject for handing over the correct one. While dogs performed well on this task, chimpanzees failed to identify the referent. Implications for great apes' and dogs' understanding of human communicative intentions are discussed

    This report contains eight linked feasibility studies conducted in Cairns during 2010. These exploratory studies examine the complex challenges of compiling and sharing information about incidents of person-to-person violence in a late night entertainment precinct (LNEP). The challenges were methodological as well as logistical and ethical. The studies look at how information can be usefully shared, while preserving the confidentiality of those involved. They also examine how information can be compiled from routinely collected sources with little or no additional resources, and then shared by the agencies that are providing and using the information.Although the studies are linked, they are also stand-alone and so can be published in peer-reviewed literature. Some have already been published, or are ‘in press’ or have been submitted for review. Others require the NDLERF board’s permission to be published as they include data related more directly to policing, or they include information provided by police.The studies are incorporated into the document under section headings. In each section, they are introduced and then presented in their final draft form. The final published form of each paper, however, is likely to be different from the draft because of journal and reviewer requirements.     Principle demonstration of fine pointing control system for inter-satellite laser communication

    Due to high data rates and reliability, inter-satellite laser communication has developed rapidly in these days. However, the stability of the laser beam pointing is still a key technique which needs to be solved; otherwise, the beam pointing jitter noise would reduce the communication quality or, even worse, would make the inter-satellite laser communication impossible. For this purpose, a bench-top of the fine beam pointing control system has been built and tested for inter-satellite laser communication. The pointing offset of more than 100 mu rad is produced by the steering mirror. With beam pointing control system turned on, the offset could be rapidly suppressed to lower than 100 nrad in less than 0.5 s. Moreover, the pointing stability can be kept at 40 nrad for yaw motion and 62 nrad for pitch motion, when the received beam jitter is set at 20 mu rad

    CIRCLING INTERFACE: AN ALTERNATIVE INTERACTION METHOD FOR ON-SCREEN OBJECT MANIPULATION

    An alternative interaction method, called the circling interface, was developed and evaluated for individuals with disabilities who find it difficult or impossible to consistently and efficiently perform pointing operations involving the left and right mouse buttons. The circling interface is a gesture-based interaction technique. To specify a target of interest, the user makes a circling motion around the target. To specify a desired pointing command with the circling interface, each edge of the screen is used. The user selects a command before circling the target. Empirical evaluations were conducted with human subjects from three different groups (individuals without disability, individuals with spinal cord injury, and individuals with cerebral palsy), comparing each group's performance on pointing tasks with the circling interface to performance on the same tasks when using a mouse button or dwell-clicking software. Across all three groups, the circling interface was faster than the dwelling interface (although the difference was not statistically significant). For the single-click operation, the circling interface was slower than dwell selection, but for both double-click and drag-and-drop operations, the circling interface was faster. In terms of performance accuracy, the results were mixed: for able-bodied subjects circling was more accurate than dwelling, for subjects with SCI dwelling was more accurate than circling, and for subjects with CP there was no difference. However, if errors caused by circling on an area with no target or by ignoring circles that are too small or too fast were automatically corrected by the circling interface, the performance accuracy of the circling interface would significantly outperform dwell selection. This suggests that the circling interface can be used in conjunction with existing pointing techniques and this combined approach may provide more effective mouse use for people with pointing problems. Consequently, the circling interface can improve clinical practice by providing an alternative pointing method that does not require physically activating mouse buttons and is more efficient than dwell-clicking. It is also expected to be useful for both computer access and augmentative communication software

    Man’s Underground Best Friend: Domestic Ferrets, Unlike the Wild Forms, Show Evidence of Dog-Like Social-Cognitive Skills

    Recent research has shown that dogs’ possess surprisingly sophisticated human-like social communication skills compared to wolves or chimpanzees. The effects of domestication on the emergence of socio-cognitive skills, however, are still highly debated. One way to investigate this is to compare socialized individuals from closely related domestic and wild species. In the present study we tested domestic ferrets (Mustela furo) and compared their performance to a group of wild Mustela hybrids and to domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). We found that, in contrast to wild Mustela hybrids, both domestic ferrets and dogs tolerated eye-contact for a longer time when facing their owners versus the experimenter and they showed a preference in a two-way choice task towards their owners. Furthermore, domestic ferrets, unlike the wild hybrids, were able to follow human directional gestures (sustained touching; momentary pointing) and could reach the success rate of dogs. Our study provides the first evidence that domestic ferrets, in a certain sense, are more dog-like than their wild counterparts. These findings support the hypothesis that domestic species may share basic socio-cognitive skills that enable them to engage in effectively orchestrated social interactions with humans
