Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDFIt is obvious that the translation of idioms causes many difficulties for translators. The aim of this article is to pay attention to some problems concerning translation of permanent idioms. The article presents in broad outline the problem of idiomatic equivalence and some aspects which the translator should pay attention to when translating idioms. The author shows some examples that cause only minor difficulties for translators (e.g. idioms taken from mythology, ancient literature and the Bible) and idioms that are a real challenge for the translator (e.g. national variants marked with culture of for-eign country).Artykuł traktuje o problemie tłumaczenia stałych związków frazeologicznych. Przedstawia on również w zarysie problem ekwiwalencji frazeologicznej. Wychodząc od tezy nieprzekładalności lub względnej przekładalności językowej i definicji stałych związków frazeologicznych jako polileksykalnych jednostek, które charakteryzują się tym, że jako jednostki idiomatyczne pełnią funkcję jednego wyrazu oraz są nośnikami kultury, symboli i stereotypów, poprzez przykłady ekwiwalencji całkowitej, częściowej i zerowej autor wskazuje aspekty, na które translator powinien zwrócić uwagę przy tłumaczeniu stałych związków frazeologicznych. Pokazane są przykłady frazeologizmów, które nie stwarzają tłumaczom większych trud-ności (frazeologizmy pochodzenia mitologicznego, biblijnego, łacińskiego i greckiego), jak również takie, które mogą być dla tłumacza wyzwaniem (warianty narodowe i stałe związki frazeologiczne z tzw. komponentami unikalnymi czy też nazwami geograficznymi lub etnicznymi). Autor mówi o nieprzetłumaczalności kulturowej, gdyż język wyjściowy i docelowy należą do języków z różnego kręgu społeczno-kulturowego, przez co utrwalają się w nich realia obyczajowo-społeczne, ludzkie przekonania i poglądy na świat
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Multikodale Gestaltung von Comics
No full textComics stellen ein Musterbeispiel für multikodale Erzähltexte dar. Gegenstand der Überlegungen sind multikodale Gestaltungsmittel und ihre Funktionen in Comics. Im Beitrag wird den einzelnen verbalen (Sprache, Schrift) und visuellen (Bild) narrativen Techniken nachgegangen. Im Focus stehen auch die Interaktionen zwischen den erzählerischen Mitteln sowie die Formen von Sprach- (Sprech-, Denk- und Flüsterblase) und von Bildtechniken (Darstellung von einzelnen Panels und Bildsequenzen). ‚Heterogene‘ Zeichen ikonischer und symbolischer Natur fügen sich im Comic zu einer leicht verständlichen visuell-verbalen Geschichte und ergeben eine multikodale Mischung, in der die sequenzielle Wahrnehmung der Gestaltungsmittel die Handlung vorantreibt und die Kontinuität der Narrativität garantiert. Die Leistungen der in Comics verwendeten Modalitäten kommen in einer Interaktion zum Ausdruck. In dieser Interaktion besteht trotz einer eindeutigen quantitativen Dominanz visueller Mittel keine Hierarchie zwischen sprachlichem Text und Bild, sondern sie stehen sich ergänzend gleichwertig gegenüber. Es existiert in Comics somit eine verbal-visuelle Parallelität

Tłumaczenie innowacji semantycznych stałych związków frazeologicznych
Get PDFThe object of considerations focuses on problems related with the translation of semantic innovations of idioms. The first part of the article introduces the concepts of idioms, idiomatic standards and phraseological innovations. Phraseological connections or idioms are multi-word units that have a relatively stable form and meaning. This meaning is not a combination of the meanings of separate words that form the unit. A norm is accepted by a community and defined as a standard set of rules pertaining to the use and occurrence of idioms. The most common phraseological innovations are demetaphorisation, semantic contamination, desemantisation and idiom accumulation in the text. The effect of innovations is the fusion of the above mentioned factors with a text making it unique and one of its kind. Innovations expand and determine utterances. What is more, they are added value expressed by a pun. Translation of idioms may cause many problems, especially when they appear in the form and meaning different from the standard one. The main strategies in the translation of innovations are literal translation, using a different idiom that reflects the meaning of the original text, paraphrasing or creating new lexical units. Examples of semantic innovations and their translation strategies have been derived from the novel by Gunter Grass and its Polish translation.Niniejszy artykuł traktuje o innowacjach frazeologicznych na płaszczyźnie semantycznej i pokazuje strategie ich przekładu. W artykule zdefiniowano pojęcia stałych związków frazeologicznych, normy frazeologicznej i innowacji frazeologicznej oraz przedstawiono klasyfikację innowacji semantycznych. Tłumaczenie unikalnych, stworzonych na potrzeby kontekstu innowacji frazeologicznych może przysporzyć tłumaczom wiele trudności, zwłaszcza gdy stanowią podstawę gry słownej w tekstach. Innowacje frazeologiczne zostały wyekscerpowane z powieści Güntera Grassa Die Blechtrommel, a strategie ich tłumaczenia zobrazowane i omówione na przykładzie jej tłumaczenia na język polski
