Roberto Piva's poetry is composed of three volumes, in a re-edition of his seven books, sold out since 2000, including an unpublished one. This research comprehends his works, which present three distinct stages: the first stage of his poetic production approaches the city of São Paulo, the environment, the pedestrians and the inhabitants, under a surreal and beat light; the second stage strongly identifies with the counterculture and a psychedelic imaginary, and the third phase where, adding its surreal and psychedelic tool to approach his favorite subjects, the poet emphasizes a tendency that emerges since the first volumes, when identified, in a macro manner, with pantheistic ways to let itself penetrate in the world. Engaging in that tendency, the poet will become a Xamã, naming the third phase Xamanic. Two subjects are highlighted in Piva's poetry: the body and the space. Through these recurrent themes, he will go through aspects that will come upon them, as capital globalization and Christians' conflict, responsible, according to the poet, by the environment destruction and the annihilation of the interrelational possibilities among the humans. Under moralistic and utilitarian excuses, all repressive and destructive devices are implemented and his poetic works will, in a shocking, ironic, hilarious and even sublime way, demonstrate such devastation, evidencing, transgressively, other possibilities of body relationship and occupation - or not - of the spaces, with its countless interrelationships. So, the instauration of the diversity will be on top of his verses, beyond materialism, rationalism, utilitarianism, where the poet will look for communion, transcendence and pleasure. With the support of the Discourse Analysis from the Bakhtinian current, this work aims at unveiling the critical trajectory of Piva's poetic work, trying to follow his polemics in relation to sexuality and the diversity in the mystic-transcendent relationships, and also concerning the insertion of the creative expression in the formulation of the essence and its existence on its ambivalence. In this way Art, Sex and Magic will begin an aesthetic and ethic debate for the carnavalization of the hierarchies that regulate and fight living diversities, throwing and reflecting back chronotopic forms of being

The simulation of transients in thermal plant. Part II: Applications

This paper deals with the simulation of the transients of thermal plant with control systems. In the companion paper forming part I of this article [G.L. Morini, S. Piva, The simulation of transients in thermal plant. Part I: Mathematical model, Applied Thermal Engineering 27 (2007) 2138-2144] it has been described how a ‘‘thermal-library’’ of customised blocks can be built and used, in an intuitive way, to study the transients of any kind of thermal plant. Each component of plant such as valves, boilers, and pumps, is represented by a single block. In this paper, the ‘‘thermal-library’’ approach is demonstrated by the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a central heating plant of a typical apartment house during a sinusoidal variation of the external temperature. A comparison of the behaviour of such a plant with three way valve working either in flow rate or in temperature control, is presented and discussed. Finally, the results show the delaying effect of the thermal capacity of the building on the performance of the control system

THE FUTURE ROLE OF MACHINE LEARNING IN HR DEVELOPMENT

Using a Gaussian process classifier, Frey and Osborne (2017) examine how jobs are susceptible to computerisation in the US labour market by estimating the probability of technological replacement for 702 detailed occupations. The non-neutrality of technology and computerisation in labour markets, in general, is acknowledged in the literature (for a survey, see Piva & Vivarelli, 2017). Indeed, an increasing number of empirical studies (Marcolin et al., 2016) documents the decline of employment in routine intensive jobs, i.e., jobs mainly consisting of tasks following well-defined procedures that can be easily performed by sophisticated algorithms. Our research focuses on a specific occupation, the human resources (HR) manager, which is positioned at the 28th place out of the 702 occupations in the Frey and Osborne study. This evidence suggests that this occupation is hardly replaceable by technology (Chui et al., 2015). However, by disentangling the different tasks included in this occupation, we mainly focus on a complex and non-routine lever in human resource management (HRM) that requires intuition and discretionality, i.e. potential evaluation. By using a precautionary approach, this work tries to understand if machine learning can be effectively used in executing potential evaluation and consequently whether it might assist or even replace HR managers

Soc. Nutr. Physiol. (2005) 14 The effect of sodium butyrate on growth and intestinal microflora of weanling pigs (Einfluss von Na-Butyrat auf Wachstum und intestinale Mikroflora von Absetzferkeln). G. Biagi*, E. Vezzali, A. Piva and F.X. Roth – Bologna/Freising-Weihenstephan The period of five to eight weeks after weaning is a critical stage in most pork production systems. In the recent past, these problems were counteracted with widespread use of antibiotic substances and auxinic agents that may select antibiotic-resistant genes in intestinal pathogens with the possibility of a cross spread to human pathogens. Adding organic acids to piglet diets has been reported to be helpful in overcoming problems of the post-weaning period (1). Butyric acid is known to be the main energy source of the hindgut mucosa and has shown positive effects on growth when fed to weaned pigs (2). Aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of feeding sodium butyrate (SB) on piglet growth and intestinal microflora. Methods: Immediately after weaning, 48 piglets were divided into four groups (12 animals per group, housed in individual cages) for a six week trial. Treatments were a commercial diet with a) no addition (control diet) or with b) 0.1%, c) 0.2%, and d) 0.4% of SB. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Animals were weighed every week and feed consumption was recorded. At the end of the trial, six animals per group were killed. Samples of jejunum and caecum content were cultured for viable bacteria and pH, ammonia and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were determined. Results: Feeding SB at 0.4% improved piglet growth (P < 0.10). Intestinal bacterial counts and pH did not show any differences; lactobacilli in jejunum and lactobacilli, coliforms and clostridia in caecum averaged 6.1, 8.5, 6.6, and 6.2 log cfu/ml, respectively. Feeding 0.4% SB resulted in higher caecal ammonia than control (23.0 vs 15.9 mmol/l; P < 0.10) while ammonia in jejunum was not influenced by treatment. Iso-butyric acid in the jejunum was reduced by SB (-47%; P < 0.10). Interestingly, caecal iso-butyric acid was reduced by SB at 0.1% (-24%; P < 0.10) but increased by SB at 0.4% (+40%; P < 0.05). The other SCFA in jejunum and caecum were not affected by SB. Table 1. Live weight, average daily gain (ADG), daily feed intake and feed conversion rate (FCR) of piglets in the six weeks after weaning. Values are means of 12 animals ± SD. Final live weight ADG Daily feed intake FCR (kg) (g/d) (g/d) Control 26.81 ± 3.86 480 ± 73 773 ± 105 1.62 ± 0.07 Sodium butyrate 0.1% 27.98 ± 4.96 508 ± 104 805 ± 141 1.60 ± 0.08 Sodium butyrate 0.2% 27.45 ± 3.37 493 ± 65 777 ± 97 1.58 ± 0.06 Sodium butyrate 0.4% 28.85 ± 2,64* 528 ± 53* 835 ± 97 1.58 ± 0.05 *Different from control by P < 0.10. Conclusion: The present results show an improvement of animal growth when SB is fed at 0.4%. At the same time, SB at 0.4% increased caecal ammonia and iso-butyric acid concentrations, the both being metabolites resulting from bacterial proteolysis, but this effect was not observed when SB was fed at lower doses. Feeding SB to weaned pigs seems to have a positive effect on animal growth but further studies will be needed to better understand how SB influences animal performances and health. 1) ROTH, FX and KIRCHGESSNER, M (1998): J. Enhanced visualisation of complex thermofluid data: Vertical and horizontal combined convection and microscale heat transfer cases

    No full text
Copyright @ 2000 UITIn general, convective heat transfer is an 'n-dimensional' problem where n is well in excess of 3 for steady flows. Traditionally, the method of dimensional analysis results in a small number of dimensionless groups. In the case of steady forced convection these can reduce to three, namely the Nusselt (Nu), Reynolds (Re) and Prandtl (Pr) numbers, for heat transfer, fluid flow regime and fluid properties respectively. Again, traditionally, data are presented on log-log graphs, say of Nu versus Re, with Pr being a possible third parameter. For natural convection, the Grashof number (Gr) expresses buoyancy effects in place of Re, while for combined (natural and forced) convection Gr becomes additional to, rather than replacing, Re. Using sets of data for: (a) vertical combined convection in nuclear safety, (b) horizontal combined convection review material, and (c) microchannel heat transfer, in the first part of this paper we survey this problem. We reach the following conclusions: that heat transfer data are presented in either 'holistic' or 'reductive' modes, and that other thermodynamic performance data are related to the generic scientific cases of (a) 3-dimensional space and (b) multi-dimensional space. In the second part of the paper we present a first attempt at applying design-type procedures to specifying this problem. Visualisation priorities are suggested from which particular solutions will be developed in future
