This study examines for the first time tree cases of inverted amphorae used like soils improvement under floors of domus in Melite at the Roman times. The finality of inverted amphorae is once again recognized, based on studies' experiences of authior, througt analysis of lithological soils characters. In the first book of this Collection (Itinera ,1, 1996) the author offered some technical factors for analysis of the possible function of this biulding method and now, using the same method, i.e. with regard to the natural state of land, their statis lift, etc., has been possible to understand the aim of amphorae structures in Roman age

Exploring the boundaries between theory and practice in Fashion Design at IUAV University of Venice : the case of U/U/U/

Still today, in Italy, fashion design finds it difficult to relate to the dimension of university research, and this is perhaps the consequence of a lack of familiarity with the academic world: only rarely has fashion been taught in universities and it is not considered an autonomous academic discipline. Since its foundation in 2005, the BA programme in Fashion Design at IUAV University of Venice has been actively combining its design workshops with an attitude towards research in the field of fashion studies, with innovative work being carried out specifically in the field of teaching methodologies: students are asked to constantly question and discuss teaching practices and techniques – which tend to be taken for granted – as well as the concept of authorship in design. This approach – quite unique in the Italian academic field – is presented in this article through a discussion of a project originated by designer Mariavittoria Sargentini, founder and owner of the brand Marvielab, and course leader of the first-year Fashion Design Workshop at IUAV. Together with her students, Sargentini started a new collection called U/U/U/, which stands for ‘unconstrained, unisex, uniform’, after asking a group of students to redefine the concept of the daily uniform through their own interpretations. The result is a capsule collection, made of twelve looks, as the expression of a collective author. Thus, Sargentini’s U/U/U/ reflects an idea of fashion design that defies current concepts of authorship, and that questions our concept of the basic/daily uniform through an active design practice that fuses theory and object-based observations

Hints for consider again technology transfer Proceeding from the chapter “De furnum” of the Memoratorio de mercedes Comacinorum ( 713-735 a.D.) the Author offers in this paper an analyse about each structural elements and particulary about caccabi used in vaulted structures. The use of hollow terracotta vaulting tubes or ollae/ caccabi or amphorae has long been known and studied, but is possible for the Author to do many other remarks abouth origin of this peculiar building method. That especially considering hers studies of embedded-amphorae structures, a building technique to reclaim land and improve geotechnical and hydraulical conditions. The paper describes in details and throught many cases and arguments the fil rouge connecting the use of “hollow terracotta elements”. Amphorae, tubuli, caccabi are indeed all “hollow elements” light, examples of engineering applied in domus, bath-house, public buildings or of geology applied for reclaiming system, in a chronological period longer than you can imagine (suppose). Some tables bring up to date, make a synthesis of italic land and support comparisons. If we agree to this proposal ( this thesis), then vaulting structure of a kiln witch Memoratorio describes is a long long way technical and the first use of vaulting tubes is not only from Africa Proconsularis in the course of the 2nd c. a.D.. Into these view we can place the magistri commacini, her builder. The Memoratorio concern those technician, so heirs of ancient knowledge enforced from late republican to imperial times, though the earliest examples are from the greek world

After the study of a large number of embedded- amphorae used to reclaim land and improve geotechnical or hydrogeological conditions, the Author ponders on the verb munire, frequently associated with words like via and iter. Analizing classical texts and meaning of verbal form, the A. think possible that munire was used also for the building method with embedded-amphorae structures. In classical Authors doesn' t existe a specific word; for this reason when we read munire viam, munire iter ,we can be legitimated to suppose the presence of an embedded-amphorae structure, if the natural state of the soil implys a geotechnical reclaim. Following this reasoning we perhaps can moreover use “munitio” to mean embedded-amphorae structures

OBJECTIVE: β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors (ARs) play a pivotal role in myocardial function. We investigated whether functionally relevant polymorphisms within the genes encoding for these receptors indicate susceptibility to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). METHODS: This case-control association study involved 189 patients with DCM and 378 gender- and age-matched control subjects. All of the subjects were characterised by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis in terms of Ser49Gly and Arg389Gly polymorphisms in the β1-AR, and the 5′ leader cistron Arg19Cys, Arg16Gly, Gln27Glu, and Thr164Ile polymorphisms in the β2-AR. Genotype, allele and haplotype frequencies were analysed. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that the distribution of genotype and allele frequencies of the β1-Ser49Gly, β1-Arg389Gly and β2-Arg16Gly polymorphisms was significantly different between the patients and controls, and the β1-Gly49/β1-Arg389 haplotype was significantly more represented in the patients. Multivariate analysis showed that only the β1-Gly49 variant (odds ratio 1.91; 95% confidence interval 1.24-2.95; P = 0.003) and β2-Gly16Gly genotype (odds ratio 1.58; 95% confidence interval 1.10-2.26; P = 0.013) carriers were at significantly higher risk of developing DCM. CONCLUSIONS: In our population from southern Italy, the Gly49 allele of the β1-AR and the Gly16Gly genotype of the β2-AR were significantly and independently associated with the DCM phenotype, thus suggesting their role in favouring susceptibility to the disease

The Author, proceeding from a longitudinal sample area of the Po valley, analyzes the comparative management methods of three lands and cities (Novum Comum – Como, Mediolanum – Milano, Ticinum- Pavia),  different in geomorphology and hydrogeology. The most representative themes in this sense are articulated according to the parameters of Urbanitas and Rusticitas. Urbanitas illustrate the comparison between natural enviromnents and foundational works, from sublicae to inverted amphorae, water supply, sewers, with attention to suburbia and the elements that declare global planning and intervention by the municipality. Among these elements, emphasis is placed on systems with amphorae, true geotechnical or hydraulyc structures capable of adapting the land without upsetting the environment. It is the philosophy of cities and lands “resilient”.  Together with Rusticitas, with elements of “urbanization” in the vicus, the role of hydrographic basins,  connection with limitationes, the  relationship between roads and geomorphologycal opportunities are not overlooked( The roads as memory), we describe those interactions society-enviromnents that best interpret the city-system, in its political and technological indicators and in the ductility of knowledge and applications( The resilience as model).L'autrice, procedendo da una zona- campione longitudinale alla pianura padana dalle prealpi al Po, analizza le modalità di gestione di tre territori (Novum Comum, Mediolanum, Ticinum) differenti per geomorfologia e idrogeologia. The South american Natives, Shuar and Achuar people and their ethnomedical culture constitute the background subject of the Phd research, performed both in Ecuador (Salesian Politechnic University, Quito), and in Italy (Pharmaceutical biology labs, University of Ferrara). Based on ethnomedical responses, Piper aduncum, Maytenus macrocarpa, Schinus molle, Tecoma stans and Eugenia hallii were chosen as amazonian plant species subject of the research. AIMS The research has been focused on: − checking the presence of endophytic fungi in plants; − isolating and subculturing pure endophytic strains; − checking the biotransformation capacity of the isolated endophytes on pure compounds; the most performing endophytes were also tested on phytocomplexes and pure chemicals obtained by the plant from which the fungi were isolated; − phytochemical characterization and bioactivity assays of plant extracts: P. aduncum. − METHODS Biotransformations. Fresh aerial plant parts were properly washed in sanitizing solutions and in vitro cultured using adequate solid media to isolate endophytes. (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one, acetophenone, 1-indanone, 2-furyl methyl ketone, 2-methylcyclopentanone, 2-methylcyclohexanone, 2- methoxycyclohexanone were chosen as substrate model for biotransformations. The cultures were sampled after 1, 3, 7, 10 days of culturing, and ethyl acetate extracted to verify by GC-MS the presence of possible biotransformation products. Biotransformations were also checked on P. aduncum whole essential oil and on dillapiol, cis-ocimene, piperitone, (-)-terpinen-4-ol as most abundant chemicals. Chemical fingerprinting of P. aduncum essential oil. Steam distillation was adopted to obtain the essential oil, then characterized by GC-MS, NMR analyses. In vitro bioassays of P. aduncum essential oil. Antimicrobial activities were checked in vitro using proper agarized media to reach MIC. Antioxidant capacities were checked through DPPH test, ABTS and photochemiluminescence assays. Born's turbidimetric method and Writhing test were respectively adopted to check platelet-aggregation and anti-nociceptive properties. Mutagenic, antimutagenic properties and toxicity were assayed using classical and modified Ames test. MAIN RESULTS 364 fungal strains were in vitro isolated. Among all, 5 strains performed biotransformations on acetophenone to (S)-1-phenylethanol, with important yields (78-97%) and enantiomeric excess (78- 100%). Three strains gave also phenols probably by enzymatic reactions (Baeyer-Villiger oxidations). 15 fungal strains gave the lactones (-)-(1S,5R)-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-3-one and (-)-(1R,5S)-3- oxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-6-en-2-one from (+/-)-cis-bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-en-6-one, probably as result of monooxygenase activation. Phytochemical characterization of P. aduncum essential oil has evidenced dillapiol as the most abundant terpene, followed by cis-ocimene, piperitone and terpinen-4-ol. Only cisocimene and piperitone gave several biotransformation products through dehydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions. The essential oil has evidenced non-mutagenic properties and interesting antifungal and antioxidant activities. CONCLUSIONS Several endophytic fungal strains from Amazonian plants were isolated and checked for biotransformations on pure chemicals and on P. aduncum essential oil. Data obtained will be useful for possible following patents about micro-organisms able to transform pharmaceutically interesting chemicals. Taxonomical characterization of the most performing fungal strains is still in progress. P. aduncum essential oil can be considered genotoxically safe and provides interesting antifungal and antioxidant properties, supporting its ethnomedical use as cicatrising and disinfectant crude drug and suggesting an extension of its employ as preservative ingredient
