Antarctic fur seal predation on cephalopods at Marion Island
We report two observations of adult male
Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, preying on large octopods at subAntarctic Marion Island during July and August 2008. If Antarctic fur seals take cephalopods opportunistically,
as previously suggested, our observations may
be a rare event representing such opportunistic predation

At-sea distribution and habitat use in king penguins at sub-Antarctic Marion Island
King penguins make up the bulk of avian biomass on a number of sub-Antarctic islands where they have a large functional effect on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The same applies at Marion Island where a substantial proportion of the world population breeds. In spite of their obvious ecological importance, the at-sea distribution and behavior of this population has until recently remained entirely unknown. In addressing this information deficiency, we deployed satellite-linked tracking instruments on 15 adult king penguins over 2 years, April 2008 and 2013, to study their post-guard foraging distribution and habitat preferences. Uniquely among adult king penguins, individuals by and large headed out against the prevailing Antarctic Circumpolar Current, foraging to the west and southwest of the island. On average, individuals ventured a maximum distance of 1,600 km from the colony, with three individuals foraging close to, or beyond, 3,500 km west of the colony. Birds were mostly foraging south of the Antarctic Polar Front and north of the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Habitat preferences were assessed using boosted regression tree models which indicated sea surface temperate, depth, and chorophyll a concentration to be the most important predictors of habitat selection. Interestingly, king penguins rapidly transited the eddy-rich area to the west of Marion Island, associated with the Southwest Indian Ocean Ridge, which has been shown to be important for foraging in other marine top predators. In accordance with this, the king penguins generally avoided areas with high eddy kinetic energy. The results from this first study into the behavioral ecology and at-sea distribution of king penguins at Marion Island contribute to our broader understanding of this species.</p
The relationship between photography and ethnography in anthropological studies, albeit ancient and deep, is uncertain and complex. Photography has been increasingly used in anthropological researches but it´s potencial as something beyond illustration and it´s interaction with the Other as a technique is very little explored. This research is dedicated to the analysis of this relationship by taking the work of Pierre Fatumbi Verger, his life and legacy. A French man, rooted in Bahia, Brasil, in the decade of 1940, Verger is known worldwide for his work as a photographer as well as for his etnographic studies. However, the reason of this recognition is undefined and examining the reason for these indefinitions can be a fruitful field of reflection concerning ethnographic researches, especially when related to the photographic universe. The Pierre Verger Foundation is the institution that hosts his photographic and ethnographic collection and it´s also where the field research of this work took place. Through the field research combined with the readings of photographs related to candomblé and it´s manifestations in Africa and Bahia, a photographic analysis methodology was created that privilege interaction and dialogue as a way to build definitions about ethnography. By the contact with the Foundation, it´s users and it´s available photographic collection, this research intends to reflect about the ethnography and the creation of an ethnographic view in direct relation to the exercise of photography
Sensitivity of δ13C values of seabird tissues to combined spatial, temporal and ecological drivers: a simulation approach
Biologging technologies have revolutionised our understanding of the foraging ecology and life history traits of marine predators, allowing for high resolution information about location, and in some cases, foraging behaviour of wild animals. At the same time, stable isotope ecologists have independently developed methods to infer location and foraging ecology (trophic geography). To date, relatively few studies have combined these two approaches, despite the potential wealth of complementary information. In marine systems, spatial and trophic information are coded in the isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen in animal tissues, but interpretation of isotope values is limited by both the lack of reference maps (isoscapes) needed to relate the isotopic composition of an animal's tissues to a location, and the relatively large number of variables that could influence tissue isotope compositions. Simulation modelling can help to interpret measured tissue isotope compositions of migratory animals in the context of spatio-temporally dynamic isotopic baselines. Here, we couple individual-based movement models with global marine isotope models to explore the sensitivity of tissue δ13C values to a range of extrinsic (environmental) and intrinsic (behavioural, physiological) drivers. We use in-silico experiments to simulate isotopic compositions expected for birds exhibiting different movement and foraging behaviours and compare these simulated data to isotopic data recovered from biologger-equipped female northern giant petrels Macronectes halli incubating eggs on sub-Antarctic Marion Island. Our simulations suggest that in the studied system, time is a strong driver of isotopic variance. Accordingly, this implies that caution should be used when comparing δ13C values of marine predators’ tissues between seasons and years. We show how an in-silico experimental approach can be used to explore the sensitivity of animal tissue isotopic compositions to complex and often interacting drivers. Appreciation of the principle drivers behind isotopic variance specific to a given animal and geographic context can enhance inferences of geolocation as well as foraging behaviour, and can be applied to any mobile predator. Models can be relativey simple or complex and multi-layered depending on the level of ecological realism required. Future investigations can use other isoscapes, including terrestrial isoscapes and more complex or different movement models.</p
Overlap and temporal variation in the diets of sympatric Antarctic and Subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus spp.) at Marion Island, Prince Edward Islands
Antarctic (Arctocephalus gazella) and Subantarctic (A. tropicalis) fur seals are important predators in the Southern Ocean. Marion Island (southern Indian Ocean) hosts the largest sympatric breeding populations of these two species. Environmental and population changes here over two decades may have influenced their diet and trophic interactions. To quantify diet, we analysed prey remains in scat samples from Antarctic (661 scats) and Subantarctic (750 scats) fur seals collected at Marion Island (2006–2010). We assessed diet composition over time and calculated dietary overlap. The diet of both species was dominated by fish prey (98.2% and 99.4% of prey items), mainly myctophids. Antarctic fur seals consumed small numbers of penguins, cephalopods and crustaceans. In Subantarctic fur seal scats, crustaceans and cephalopods were rare and penguin remains were absent. The diets of the two species overlapped substantially (Pianka’s index = 0.98), however, small but significant differences in the relative proportions of prey were evident. Seasonal and annual diet changes suggest that their diet is similarly influenced by patterns of local prey availability and abundance. Despite substantial changes in the population size and trajectory of Antarctic and Subantarctic fur seals – which would be expected to influence trophic interactions between them – comparing our data to those from earlier studies (1989–2000) did not reveal significant long-term dietary changes in either species
