Towards a relational ethics in pandemic times and beyond: Limited accountability, collective performativity and new subjectivity
It is often said that desperate times call for desperate measures. Yet, in the contemporary pandemic crisis, desperate organizational measures seem all but present. Instead, for most of us it is 'business as usual' while we are at the same time required to take care of our kids. The situation makes us highly uncomfortable and overwhelms many of us with feelings of stress - when trying to keep on going with the flow - or feelings of guilt - when just not being able to juggle all the different things. In this short piece, I draw on a personal vignette to first theorize how the pandemic crisis leverages the constitution of a masculine subjectivity and, so doing, further increases the ontological struggle in the constitution of a female subjectivity under neoliberal governance. In a second instance, I turn to an email sent by my PhD supervisor to illustrate how a relational ethics, recognizing the openness and generosity in the relation, and collective performativity can lower the ethical burden we face. I conclude by arguing that such an alternative script and the subjectivity fostered through it is urgently needed, not only today in pandemic times, but also in times beyond.Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, Grant/Award Number: G.0630.14N; Flemish Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium, Grant/Award Number: G.0630.14 NDe Coster, M (corresponding author), Hasselt Univ, Martelarenlaan 42, B-3500 Hasselt, Belgium.

More Than Prefigurative Politics? Redefining institutional frames to reduce precarity under neoliberal capitalism
This paper responds to the emergent calls for recovering the role of contentious politics in prefigurative communities to more effectively transform capitalist institutions. Theoretically drawing on the work of Judith Butler, our paper points to the importance of addressing the institutional frames that demarcate who will be (mis)recognized in the public space and which are at the core of politics. Our analysis of the Coop case shows how prefigurative and contentious politics are not incompatible, but can rather strengthen each other in a virtuous circle. When articulated to redefine existing institutional frames, they can reduce precarity. Through this articulation an assembly is constituted where a redefined subject can emerge outside the precarizing frames of neoliberalism. At the same time, our analysis suggests that Coop's political practices do not completely redefine the individualized, calculative neoliberal subject. Project workers embraced the assembly only to the extent that it helped them reduce their self-responsibility and advance their professional and life projects. Overall, these insights advance the literature on grassroots organizations by showing the importance of contentious politics in attempting to redefine the institutional frames, as opposed to solely relying on prefigurative politics outside institutions. Yet they simultaneously confirm the difficulty of redefining the precarious neoliberal subject through collective emancipatory projects. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.
Yet were there early on, and especially since the late eighteenth century, women sculptors who worked for the (semi) public space, and this more than has hitherto been assumed. In Sisyphus' daughters, Marjan Sterckx takes up these unique sculptors and their work in the urban public and semi-public space in the period ca. 1770-1953. Paris, London and Brussels act as a case study. After an analysis of the presence and representation of the sculptures by women in the three cities studied, the author describes the difficulties and opportunities for women with various profiles to become a sculptor then, to enjoy a proper training and to obtain commissions in those cities. Then she goes on to the formal and iconographic characteristics of the traced sculptures, and their visibility in the public and semi-public space. A final section deals with the reception, past and present, of the studied sculptors and their (semi) public works. A second volume, the catalogue, inventories 365 not previously gathered sculptures by women in public and semi-public outdoor and indoor spaces in Paris, London and Brussels in the period ca. 1770-1953
How Can Disease Control Program Contribute to Health System Strengthening in Sub-Saharan Africa : A Concept Note for Engaging in the Global Debates on Health Systems Strengthening
Recently, there has been broad consensus in the global health community on the need for health systems strengthening (HSS) to make further progress toward the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is still divergence
on how HSS should be framed, what HSS practically entails, and how it should be done.
We set out to clarify HSS for managers of disease control programs (DCPs).
In September 2000, the United Nations
created a new movement in the fight against poverty: 189
countries in the General Assembly expressed their commitment
to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the Millennium
Declaration (World Health Organization 2004). The
recognition of health as one of the key determinants of
human development is translated in three health-related
MDGs. MDG 4 and 5 focus respectively on children and women
as priority target groups, and MDG 6 focuses on priority
diseases (HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other major diseases),
representing the bulk of the disease burden in low-income
countries. In section two, the author first focuses on how
national health systems can be understood, with their
strengthening in mind, with a special focus on service
delivery and on its pluralistic nature. In section three,
the author uses the Anna Karenina principle to explain an
approach to health systems assessment at the national level.
Finally, in section four, the author develops an approach on
how Disease Control Program (DCP) can contribute to Health
systems Strengthening (HSS) at country level
Historical memory about Jews of Prekomurje
Marjan Toš is a systematic representation of the fate of Slovenian Jews. The story focuses on both the destruction and the post-war memory of the Jewish community of Prekomurje. The author paints images of the controversial, fragmented, and largely repressed memory of growing anti-Semitism between the two wars, deportation in 1944, the return of a handful of survivors, expropriation, and emigration. The reader is confronted with a drama of various regional and national actors, their interests, knowledge, views, aspirations, in which the author does not interfere with any excessive moralizing or even apology. On the contrary, based on in-depth research work, it shows us how such a complex topic as systematic genocide can be thought of" (part of the review of dr. Irena Šumi).Knjiga je objavljena uz podršku Javne agencije za knjige Republike Slovenije (the book was published with the support of the Public Book Agency of the Republic of Slovenia)
Aplikasi Bahan Bantu Mengajar Rasulullah S.A.W. dalam Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Ibadah Khususiah dari Perspektif Muhammad Fu'ad Abdul Baqi dalam Kitab Al-Lu'lu' Wal Marjan (Application of teaching aids of Prophet Peace be Upon Him on Teaching and Learning Worship from the perspective of Muhammad Fu'ad Abdul Baqi in Scripture Lu'lu 'Wal Marjan)
(English Translation: Use of teaching aids in teaching and learning have a positive impact throughout the lesson. Teaching aids are also able to attract and encourage students to concentrate fully on the topic of the teacher during a learning process. For teachers of Islamic Education in particular, Prophet p.b.u.h education be used as an example because he is the best role model in all aspects of life. Purpose made him p.b.u.h as a model of teaching is to inculcate the spirit Islamic Education teachers in educating students, especially Muslim students. Overview Prophet p.b.u.h education is seen through his hadiths that asserted by two famous narrators of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim. Thus this paper would like to see BBM applied by the Prophet p.b.u.h from the perspective author of the book al-Lu'Lu 'wa al-Marjan, namely Muhammad Fuad Abdul Baqi and restricted by the researcher only to the hadiths related to worship pillar)
