Sociocultural Adaptation Of The Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (speq) In Brazil [adaptação Sociocultural Do Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (speq) No Brasil]
No full textPURPOSE: to translate into Brazilian Portuguese and culturally adapt the Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ) to climacteric women. METHODS: the original English version from the University of Melbourne, Australia, was initially translated into Portuguese and back-translated into English. A sociocultural adaptation of vocabulary and linguistic constructions was performed to facilitate comprehension. The questionnaire was then pretested in successive stages in 50 women, until no doubts remained. The final version of the adapted instrument was self-responded by 378 Brazilian-born women, between 40 to 65 years old, with 11 years or more of schooling in a population-based study. The reliability (internal consistency as measured by Cronbach's alpha), the construct validity (correlation coefficients between the items comprising the SPEQ and selected variables) and the criterion validity (correlation coefficient between sexual dysfunction score and overall score of sexual life classification) were analyzed. RESULTS: one hundred and eight women answered all the questions of the SPEQ and were included in the study. Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) for all the nine SPEQ items ranged from 0.55 to 0.77 and the general alpha was 0.68. In the construct validity analysis, most of the correlation coefficients were significant (p<0.005). The criterion validity analysis showed significant correlation coefficients in most cases. The Opinion Of Women On Menopause And Treatment Of Its Symptoms [depoimentos De Mulheres Sobre A Menopausa E O Tratamento De Seus Sintomas]
No full textOBJECTIVE. To evaluate the perception of a group of women from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, with respect to menopause and its treatment. METHODS. A secondary analysis was performed on data from a population-based, cross sectional study carried out with 378 Brazilian born women between 40 and 65 years of age, with 11 years or more of formal education. Some women added spontaneous comments to the end of the questionnaire on sexuality handed out by research assistants and self-responded anonymously. There were those who provided comments at the end of the questionnaire and those who did not. The groups were compared with respect to sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics using Pearson's chi-square test. Comments were transcribed in their entirety to a computerized file for thematic content analysis, and units of meaning were identified and classified. RESULTS. Approximately one-third of the women (114/378) provided comments. Significantly more women with lower income levels provided comments as compared to those with higher income levels. The principal identified categories of analysis were: a) uncertainty and/or confusion, mainly with regard to anguish, stress and doubts about menopause; b) symptoms that lead to negative feelings, such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness and mood changes; and c) hormone replacement therapy, fears and perception of a lack of conviction in the physicians who prescribe it. CONCLUSION. Climacteric Syndrome In A Northeastern Brazilian City: A Household Survey [síndrome Climatérica Em Uma Cidade Do Nordeste Brasileiro: Um Inquérito Domiciliar]
No full textPurpose: To assess the prevalence of Climacteric Syndrome (CS) in women from a municipality of Northeastern Brazil which is less developed socioeconomically. Methods: A prospective household survey was performed in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil with 1,210 climacteric women aged 45 to 60 years. Interviews were applied using previously tested standard questionnaires from April to July 2008. The severity of climacteric symptoms was analyzed by circulatory and psychological indexes and the latter were associated with menopausal status. Multiple correspondence analysis was used to assess the relation among climacteric symptoms. RESULTS: Most patients were 55 to 60 years old (35.3%), mulatto (37.9%), with 9-11 years of schooling (39.8%), with a partner (56%), Catholic (73.9%) and belonged to the socioeconomic class C (51.1%). The prevalence of CS was 85.9%, and hot flashes (56.4%) and sweating (50.4%) were the most prevalent symptoms. The most frequent psychological symptoms were nervousness (45%) and emotional liability (44.8%). The severity of vasomotor and psychological symptoms was significantly higher during the peri and postmenopausal period (p<0.05). Vaginal dryness (62.7%) was the most prevalent urogenital complaint. Quality Of Life And Adverse Events After Radiotherapy In Gynecologic Cancer Survivors: A Cohort Study
No full textPurpose: To evaluate quality of life (QOL) in gynecologic cancer survivors after radiotherapy (RT), investigate the frequency of adverse events and demonstrate an association between these symptoms and QOL. Methods: A prospective cohort study of 95 women aged 21-75 years undergoing RT for gynecologic cancer was carried out. QOL was assessed by the WHOQOL-BREF before, at 4 months, 1 year and 3 years after RT and adverse events were evaluated following RT by the (CTCAE) v 3.0 scale. QOL scores were assessed by the Wilcoxon signed rank test over time. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify predictors of QOL. Results: The most frequent adverse events were pain (64.2%) and dyspareunia (45.9%). A significant increase in QOL scores was observed in the psychological domain, general health and overall QOL. No full textHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has increased considerably among middle-aged women. In this work we reviewed recent studies aimed at identifying possible factors related to HIV infection in climacteric women. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
