Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

sentimental novel La Femme Auteur by Madame de Genlis, originally published in 1802 and translated into Portuguese in 2021 as A Mulher Escritora (The Woman Writer). This fictional work is examined as a literary representation of female experience during the period, addressing both the challenges faced by women writers and the limitations imposed on their intellectual endeavors. The research develops a bio-bibliography of the author, contextualizing her extensive literary production, her relationship with Enlightenment thought, and her participation in the French cultural scene. By exploring the tensions between Enlightenment values and the social and cultural restrictions imposed on women, the analysis reveals how the novel, while engaging with the philosophical principles of the era, exposes the contradictions and fragility of those ideals when applied to women's roles in public and intellectual spaces. The theoretical approach combines feminist and historical perspectives, considering the conditions of female literary production, the narrative strategies employed by the author, and the impact of her work on the debate surrounding authorship and gender. Thus, the study highlights the challenges and achievements of Madame de Genlis in a society marked by profound philosophical, political, and cultural transformations, emphasizing her significance as a literary and intellectual figure during a period of ideological transition and contestation.Esta dissertação investiga a escrita feminina no século XVIII, tendo como objeto de análise o romance sentimental La femme auteur, de Madame de Genlis, publicado originalmente em 1802 e traduzido para o português em 2021 como A Mulher Escritora. A obra, de caráter ficcional, é examinada como uma representação literária da experiência feminina no período, abordando tanto os desafios enfrentados por mulheres autoras quanto as limitações impostas ao seu exercício intelectual. A pesquisa elabora uma biobibliografia da autora, contextualizando sua vasta produção literária, suas relações com o contexto iluminista e sua participação no cenário cultural francês. Ao investigar as tensões entre os valores do Iluminismo e as restrições sociais e culturais impostas às mulheres, a análise destaca como o romance, ao mesmo tempo em que dialoga com os princípios filosóficos do período, expõe as contradições e fragilidades desses mesmos ideais quando aplicados ao papel da mulher no espaço público e intelectual. A abordagem teórica articula perspectivas feministas e históricas, considerando as condições de produção literária feminina, as estratégias narrativas empregadas pela autora e o impacto de sua obra no debate sobre autoria e gênero. Assim, o estudo evidencia os desafios e conquistas da escritora em uma sociedade marcada por profundas revisões filosóficas, políticas e culturais, ressaltando a importância de Madame de Genlis como uma figura literária e intelectual de relevância em um período de transição e contestação ideológica.São Cristóvã
A voz narrativa em O fim de Eddy (2018) e Quem matou meu pai (2023), de Édouard Louis
Get PDFIn this research, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of the narrative voice of the Édouard Louis’ literary works The End of Eddy and Who Killed my Father, from a
self-writing perspective. To conduct this research, we investigated the formal and paratextual features - interviews, editorial information from the books, etc. - of the works, resting our arguments on Lejeune (2008). Next, we analyzed the composition of the narrative voice guided by Genette (2017), and, from that, the difference between author, narrator, and character, and the aspects related to the narrative time level, and person. To endorse the proposed discussion, the theorists Bal (1997), Friedman (2002), and Leite (2005) were integrated into it. Besides that, since it is a 21st -century narrative, we address in this dissertation the traditional narrator matter supported by Benjamin (1987) with the utilitarian and universal nature of literature, as well as the counterpoint, proposed by Santiago (2002), based on considerations on sexuality, and, above all, the social class of the author and narrator. Throughout this research, we conducted a bibliographical survey dedicated to the chosen works. With this work, we aim to contribute to the debate on self-writing and Édouard Louis’ literary works in Brazil.Na presente pesquisa busca-se investigar as características da voz narrativa das obras O fim de Eddy (2018) e Quem matou meu pai (2023) de Édouard Louis, partindo de uma perspectiva das escritas de si. Para realizar essa investigação, procedemos à análise dos elementos formais e paratextuais – entrevistas, informações editoriais dos livros, etc. – das obras, apoiando-nos sobretudo em Lejeune (2008). Em seguida, analisamos a constituição da voz narrativa norteada por Genette (2017) e, a partir dela, a distinção entre autor, narrador e personagem, e os aspectos relativos ao tempo da narração, nível narrativo e pessoa. Para apoiar a discussão
proposta, os teóricos Bal (1997), Friedman (2002) e Leite (2005) foram incorporados. Além disso, por tratar-se de uma narrativa do século XXI, é abordada na dissertação a questão do narrador tradicional defendida por Benjamin (1987) com a natureza utilitária e universal da literatura, assim como o contraponto, posto por Santiago (2002), a partir de considerações sobre a sexualidade e, sobretudo, a classe social do autor e narrador. No decorrer desta pesquisa, realizamos igualmente um levantamento bibliográfico da fortuna crítica dedicada às obras escolhidas.
