PIMM: A Performance Improvement Measurement Methodology
This report presents a Performance Improvement Measurement Methodology (PIMM) for measuring and reporting the mission performance for organizational elements of the U.S. Department of Energy to comply with the Chief Financial Officer`s Act (CFOA) of 1990 and the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) of 1993. The PIMM is illustrated by application to the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC), a Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) field center of the Office of Fossil Energy, along with limited applications to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Office and the Office of Fossil Energy. METC is now implementing the first year of a pilot project under GPRA using the PIMM. The PIMM process is applicable to all elements of the Department; organizations may customize measurements to their specific missions. The PIMM has four aspects: (1) an achievement measurement that applies to any organizational element, (2) key indicators that apply to institutional elements, (3) a risk reduction measurement that applies to all RD&D elements and to elements with long-term activities leading to risk-associated outcomes, and (4) a cost performance evaluation. Key Indicators show how close the institution is to attaining long range goals. Risk reduction analysis is especially relevant to RD&D. Product risk is defined as the chance that the product of new technology will not meet the requirements of the customer. RD&D is conducted to reduce technology risks to acceptable levels. The PIMM provides a profile to track risk reduction as RD&D proceeds. Cost performance evaluations provide a measurement of the expected costs of outcomes relative to their actual costs

PiMM: Parameterized and Interfaced dataflow Meta-Model for MPSoCs runtime reconfiguration
International audience—Dataflow models of computation are widely used for the specification, analysis, and optimization of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications. In this paper a new meta-model called PiMM is introduced to address the important challenge of managing dynamics in DSP-oriented representations. PiMM extends a dataflow model by introducing an explicit parameter dependency tree and an interface-based hierarchical compositionality mechanism. PiMM favors the design of highly-efficient heterogeneous multicore systems, specifying algorithms with customizable trade-offs among predictability and exploita-tion of both static and adaptive task, data and pipeline paral-lelism. PiMM fosters design space exploration and reconfigurable resource allocation in a flexible dynamic dataflow context

Expression of non-native transcriptional activators may be a powerful general method to activate secondary metabolites biosynthetic pathways. PAS-LuxR regulators, whose archetype is PimM, activate the biosynthesis of polyene macrolide antifungals and other antibiotics, and have been shown to be functionally preserved across multiple Streptomyces strains. In this work we show that constitutive expression of pimM in Streptomyces clavuligerus ATCC 27064 significantly affected its transcriptome and modifies secondary metabolism. Almost all genes in three secondary metabolite clusters were overexpressed, including the clusters responsible for the biosynthesis of the clinically important clavulanic acid and cephamycin C. In comparison to a control strain, this resulted in 10- and 7-fold higher production levels of these metabolites, respectively. Metabolomic and bioactivity studies of S. clavuligerus::pimM also revealed deep metabolic changes. Antifungal activity absent in the control strain was detected in S. clavuligerus::pimM, and determined to be the result of a fivefold increase in the production of the tunicamycin complex.</p
