Will smart homes improve our lives? A design perspective towards effective wellbeing at home

New solutions for home automation show novel approaches to the design of products and systems for domestic use, and promise innovative performances. Nevertheless, there is still a gap, that is worthwhile to investigate, between the state of the art of technology-based solutions and what is actually adopted at home. This paper discusses this topic from a design point of view. The research is based on cross-examination of case studies and the results of extensive ethnography in domestic environments. We discuss the tangle of practical and nonfunctional needs that characterize the experience of users at home in an ampler way, aiming at effective wellbeing. To synthesize the results of ethnography, we introduce the concept of resilience in domestic environment arguing that, in the design of solutions for home automation, we must consider home as a dynamic place, apt to support the continuous change of needs and lifestyles of users

The role of the emotional design in bridging products and cultures

The actual globalised market suggests that most indus- trial products can be sold everywhere in the world. As a matter of fact, the purchase of an object (or the access to a service) is usually motivated and pushed not only and often not mainly by its intrinsic function capability and quality, but by its meaning (from a metaphoric point of view) and the cultural values it expresses. Meaning and expression of values are mainly given to a product through design. According to recent studies on perception, based on neuroscience, it is possible to examine perceptual formal elements (e.g. shapes, colours, touch, interaction protocol, etc.) and to model both emotional meanings and cultural values. While this kind of modelling is a pioneer activity, still in its first tentative explorations, it seems to provide an unavoidable step toward a more aware a more responsible design activity. The paper addresses to the above topics, presents a pro- vocative model to depict the relationship between struc- ture elements, emotional feelings and the cultural values, and it presents some cases of analysis of products/servi- ces available in the market. The different cultural values within different countries are examined and classified on the base f some social sciences results; emotional feelings and the values expressed by some products’ design are abducted on the base of the hinted metaphors. The paper outlines a relationship between the formal characteristics of products and services, and the success factors overall in the world, and again in provides provocative guidelines to avoid cultural rejection in some countries. Examples and experiences are discussed

"Social Consensus: Contribution to Design Methods for AI Agents That Employ Personal Data

The emerging complex IoT ecosystems, embodied through Artificially Intelligent (AI) Agents on the front-end interaction with the user, rise many new considerations to be taken into account during the design process, among which the use of sensitive personal data. This paper introduces a case study, a concluded project of a system supported by AI algorithms for delivering tailored services to the drivers, including insurance offerings and supporting drivers in practicing safer driving style. We report on a segment of user studies done within this project that relates to the use of personal data, and we discuss the notion of emerged user values within. Accordingly, we observe and propose inclusion of social consensus considerations within the design process and evaluation of the same

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Anticipating Ethical Issues When Designing Services that Employ Personal Data

Advancements in technology enable cross-device interactions and the creation of complex ecosystems of Internet of Things (IoT). Networked systems support the creation of services for multiple purposes such as smart transportation, health care, wellbeing. The spreading of services based on personal data is shaping current socio-technical systems; it induces innovations that are changing everyday scenarios and behaviors, posing ethical issues that should be taken into account since the very first phases of the design process. As designers, we need to understand the user experience with respect to the usual requirements of usability, acceptability and desirability of the new solutions, and manage delicate issues related to the impacts of these solutions on individuals and communities. This requires knowledge and dedicated design tools enabling designers to make conscious design choices during the design process. In this paper, we present an anticipation method aimed to support awareness of designers about critical issues related to the use of personal data in the project of complex technology-based systems and services. The paper reports the main features of the methods and of the research activity that generated our approach. Furthermore, we illustrate the results obtained applying the anticipation method on a case study, the MEMoSa project. The case study refers to an innovative service offering tailored services for safer driving; this research involved several partners, including a telecommunication company, and insurance offerings services for safer driving. The case study supports the validation of the anticipation method and the discussion of its potentials

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
