    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Cattle farming is one of the main agricultural activities in the country, playing a fundamental role in the primary economy, based on pasture food. The inappropriate use of these areas has been one of the main causes of the decline in the natural fertility of these soils, with more than half of Brazilian pastures, both native and cultivated, suffering some type of degradation. Thus, we sought to assess whether the decomposition of bovine manure improves the biological, physical and chemical properties of the soil in two pasture areas in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, in the year 2019. The research used a hypothetical-deductive approach method, method of statistical procedure, with experimental research in the field, of quantitative character and technique of intensive direct observation, observation in the field and laboratory. Two experiments were implemented, one in annual pasture with grazing and the other in perennial pasture without grazing. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design, with 3 treatments and 7 repetitions, totaling 21 experimental units of 2 m?. The treatments used were: (SES) original condition of the area without the addition of manure; (ES) application of a 5 cm layer of fresh bovine manure; (ET) application of a 5 cm layer of fresh bovine manure and placing a protective screen against the entry of soil macrofauna. For biological analysis of the edaphic macrofauna, the TSBF method (Tropical Soil and Biology Fertility) was used, the chemical indicators analyzed were pH, P, K, MO, Ca, Mg, H + Al, CTCef, CTCp and base saturation and the physical indicators evaluated were density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, degree of compaction and stability of aggregates in water. The grazing annual grazing area had an average biodegradation of 78% of the manure, showing improvement in the biological quality of the soil with an increase in individuals from the group of Coleoptera, Armadilidiidae, Oligochaeta and Mollusca, chemical improvement through the increase of nutrient contents such as P and K, and in the soil structure by decreasing the density and degree of compaction, and increasing the porosity of the soil in layers between 10 and 20 cm in the ES and ET, however, the layers of 5 to 20 cm showed high rates of degree of soil compaction in all treatments, verifying that animal trampling raises the degree of soil compaction to critical levels, decreasing their macroporosity. The biodegradation of 100% of the manure in the experiment in an area of perennial pasture without grazing, showed in ES and ET a greater number of individuals from the group of Coleoptera, Armadilidiidae and Oligochaeta, increased levels of nutrients P, K, Ca and Mg, and pH levels and base saturation and reduction of H + Al and effective CTC levels, in addition to an increase in macropores in the 0 to 5 cm layer. It is concluded that bovine manure improves chemical, physical and biological properties of soils of perennial and annual pastures, mainly with an increase in beneficial macrofauna, nutrient levels in the soil, and reduction of the degree of compaction and an increase in the amount of macropores.A bovinocultura ? uma das principais atividades agropecu?rias do pa?s, exercendo papel fundamental na economia prim?ria, com base alimentar de pastagens. O uso inadequado dessas ?reas tem sido uma das principais causas do decl?nio na fertilidade natural desses solos, sendo que mais da metade das pastagens brasileiras, tanto nativas como cultivadas vem sofrendo algum tipo de degrada??o. Assim, buscou-se avaliar se a decomposi??o de esterco bovino melhora as propriedades biol?gicas, f?sicas e qu?micas do solo em duas ?reas de pastagens na regi?o noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul, no ano 2019. A pesquisa utilizou m?todo de abordagem hipot?tico-dedutivo, m?todo de procedimento estat?stico, com pesquisa experimental a campo, de car?ter quantitativo e t?cnica de observa??o direta intensiva, observa??o a campo e laboratorial. Foram implantados dois experimentos, um em pastagem anual com pastejo e outro em pastagem perene sem pastejo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com 3 tratamentos e 7 repeti??es, totalizando 21 unidades experimentais de 2 m?. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: (SES) condi??o original da ?rea sem adi??o de esterco; (ES) aplica??o de camada de 5 cm de esterco bovino fresco; (ET) aplica??o de camada de 5 cm de esterco bovino fresco e coloca??o de tela de prote??o contra a entrada da macrofauna do solo. Para an?lise biol?gica da macrofauna ed?fica foi utilizado o m?todo TSBF (Tropical Soil and Biology Fertility), os indicadores qu?micos analisados foram o pH, P, K, MO, Ca, Mg, H+Al, CTCef, CTCp e a satura??o de bases e os indicadores f?sicos avaliados foram densidade, porosidade total, macroporosidade, microporosidade, grau de compacta??o e estabilidade de agregados em ?gua. A ?rea de pastagem anual com pastejo teve biodegrada??o m?dia de 78% do esterco, apresentando melhoria na qualidade biol?gica do solo com aumento de indiv?duos do grupo dos Cole?pteros, Armadilidiidae, Oligochaeta e Molusca, melhoria qu?mica atrav?s do aumento de teores de nutrientes como P e K, e na estrutura do solo atrav?s da diminui??o da densidade e grau de compacta??o, e aumento da porosidade do solo nas camadas entre 10 e 20 cm nos ES e ET, por?m, as camadas de 5 a 20 cm apresentaram ?ndices elevados de grau de compacta??o do solo em todos os tratamentos, verificando que o pisoteio animal eleva o grau de compacta??o dos solos a n?veis cr?ticos, diminuindo a macroporosidade dos mesmos. A biodegrada??o de 100% do esterco no experimento em ?rea de pastagem perene sem pastejo, apresentou nos ES e ET maior quantidade de indiv?duos do grupo dos Cole?pteros, Armadilidiidae e Oligochaeta, aumento de teores dos nutrientes P, K, Ca e Mg, e dos n?veis de pH e satura??o de bases e redu??o dos teores de H + Al e CTC efetiva, al?m de apresentar aumento do macroporos na camada de 0 a 5 cm.
