Learning the hard way – How a narrative structure can bring out the positive power of failure
Get PDFTämä taiteen maisterin opinnäyte käsittelee tarinankerrontaa ja epäonnistumista selvittääkseen, onko epäonnistumisella positiivinen puoli, ja jos mahdollista, miten sen voi löytaa. Voiko epäonnistumisesta tulla pohja henkilokohtaiselle kasvulle ja myönteiselle voimalle?
Työn taiteellinen osuus koostuu tietokirjasta nimeltä Kantapään kautta, jonka olen kirjoittanut Miika Peltolan kanssa. Kirjaa varten haastattelimme 15 suomalaista eri alojen ammattilaista, jotka ovat tunnettuja niin menestyksestään kuin epäonnistumisistaan, heidän epäonnistumisen kokemuksistaan ja niistä yli pääsemisestä. Kantapään kautta -kirja julkaistiin Tammen kautta Suomessa tammikuussa 2012.
Tyon teoreettisessa osassa sukellan syvemmälle siihen, miten tarinat ja narratiivit liittyvät epäonnistumisen positiivisen puolen loytämiseen. Tämän osan ydin on epäonnistumistarinan kertominen sankarin arkkityypin kautta. Arkkityyppiä sovelletaan kirjan haastateltaviin. Sankaritarinan raamina olen käyttänyt Joseph Campbellin Monomyyttiä (Hero's Journey). Käsittelen epäonnistumisen kokemusta liittämällä sen suurempaan narratiiviseen rakenteeseen, jolloin sen myönteiset puolet voidaan huomata paremmin.This Master’s thesis studies storytelling and failure to find out if there is a positive side to failure and other negative experiences, and if possible, how it can be found. Can failure become a foundation for personal growth and positive vigor?
The production part of the thesis consists of a non-fiction book by the author and Miika Peltola, Kantapään kautta (rough translation: The Hard Way). For the book we interviewed 15 Finnish professionals from different fields, who are well known for their success as well as failure, about their experiences of failure and getting over it. Kantapään kautta was published in Finland by Tammi in January 2012.
In the theoretical part of the thesis I dive deeper into how narratives, stories, tie into finding the positive side of failure. Telling a failure story through the role of one archetype, the hero, is the core of this part. The archetype of the hero is applied to the characters of the book, the Finnish interviewees. As a frame of the hero story I use the Monomyth (Hero’s Journey) by Joseph Campbell. With the pattern, I treat the experience of failure by fitting it in a larger perspective from which its possible positive outcomes can be perceived
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDFTämän opinnäytetyön aiheena on uuden aikakauslehden suunnittelu ja toteutus. Painetun julkaisun nimi on Tuhti ja se ilmestyi tammikuussa 2009. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli näyttää kokonaisvaltaisesti ja konkreettisesti se osaaminen ja tietämys, jota on kartutettu HAAGA-HELIA ammattikorkeakoulun journalismin koulutusohjelmassa.
Opinnäytetyön toimeksiantaja on markkinointitoimisto Redland Oy, mutta idea lehden tekemiseen tuli opinnäytetyön tekijöiltä. Redland Oy on myös Tuhdin kustantaja. Opinnäytetyön tekeminen aloitettiin ideoinnilla vuoden 2008 alussa. Uuden aikakauslehden varsinainen rakentaminen alkoi kuitenkin vasta kesällä 2008. Lehden suunniteltiin olevan kirjamainen ja tarinallinen. Pilottinumero Tuhti 1/2009 oli painovalmis joulukuussa ja se näki päivänvalon tammikuussa 2009.
Opinnäytetyön tekijät laativat paitsi Tuhdin artikkelit, myös pääosin julkaisun ulkoasun sekä osan kuvituksesta. Lehden markkinointi ja mediamyynti sekä osa ulkoasun suunnittelemisesta kuuluivat toimeksiantajalle. Tuhdin rakennustyössä käytettiin apuna muita opiskelijoita. Lopputulos on viimeistelty yleisaikakauslehti, joka sisältää eläviä tarinoita ihmisistä ja ilmiöistä. Lehden lukijat ovat pääasiassa nuorehkoja pääkaupunkilaisia, mutta sen tilaajia löytyy myös muualta maasta.
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on myös kertoa onnistumisesta: oman lehden julkaiseminen onnistuu, jos sitä kylliksi haluaa. Siitä huolimatta on hyvä keskittyä tekemään kunnon suunnitelmat, jotta työ etenee helpommin ja joutuisammin. Tuhti on osoitus siitä, että journalistisesti laadukkaan lehden saa aikaan myös ilman loppuun asti hiottua konseptia.The subject of this thesis is developing and implementing a new magazine. It’s called Tuhti and it was published in January 2009. The purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that the authors have learned in the Program of Journalism at HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences.
The sponsor of the thesis is marketing agency Redland Ltd., but the actual idea for making the magazine came from the thesis team. Redland is also the publisher of Tuhti.
The making of the thesis started by laying out ideas at the beginning of 2008. Nevertheless, the actual making of the new magazine started in summer 2008. It was designed to be both a
book- and story-like publication. The pilot issue, Tuhti 1/2009, was ready to print in December and it saw the light of day in January 2009.
The authors composed not only all of the articles in Tuhti, but the main part of the publication’s layout design and some of the illustrations as well. Redland was responsible for most of the marketing and advertising of the magazine, as well as part of the layout design. In addition to the three listed authors, other students worked as assistants for Tuhti.
The outcome, the final product, is a general magazine that contains life-like stories about people and phenomena. The readers of the magazine are mostly youngish inhabitants of the
Helsinki metropolitan area, but there are subscribers from all over the country.
The thesis is also a story of success; it is possible to make and publish your own magazine if you want to badly enough. It is highly recommended to focus on planning properly, in order

Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
