No full textPietro Piovani ha sviluppato un’originale riflessione filosofica che si inserisce nel dibattito sulla modernità, concentrandosi sulla demistificazione dell’ordine cosmologico antico e medioevale, attraverso un processo in cui emerge tutto il valore della persona (categoria già assunta dal pensiero medievale ma che, secondo Piovani, collabora precisamente – in virtù della sua capacità di non lasciarsi classificare in un ordine unificante – al frammentarsi dell’orizzonte cosmologico) e del messaggio cristiano relativo al logos incarnato: «Il Logo incarnato incomincia a essere veduto per quello che è: non continuazione ma rifiuto del Logos erede del Nous». Una condizione che apre al primato dell’etica sull’ontologia e alla possibilità, per la stessa religione, di non dover più rispondere alle necessità dell’ontologia (“desostanzializzazione”), ma di poter finalmente riflettere la lacerazione dell’esistenza nella sua espressione poliforme della differenza.

Pietro Piovani has developed an original philosophical reflection that fits into the debate on modernity, focusing on the demystification of the ancient and medieval cosmological order. This process highlights the value of the person (a category already embraced by medieval thought but which, according to Piovani, precisely contributes—due to its ability not to be classified within a unifying order—to the fragmentation of the cosmological horizon) and the Christian message related to the incarnate logos: “The incarnate Logos begins to be seen for what it is: not a continuation but a rejection of the Logos inherited from the Nous.” This condition opens the way for the primacy of ethics over ontology and the possibility for religion itself to no longer have to respond to the needs of ontology (“desubstantialization”), but to finally reflect the rupture of existence in its polymorphic expression of difference.

In Principles of moral philosophy Piovani said that given the finite nature of the individual, the existing "no longer needs no foundation (...) because it is based." In particular, the contemporary individual is more than ever unfounded, having to constantly rely so. In this regard Piovani speaks of assenzialismo: being a be "limited" man bases its existence on an absence, that does not constitute something negative, but, on the contrary, represents that "most" of Nietzsche's memory is unique about the individual

No full textPietro Piovani is a philosopher who is still, unjustly, little known. Here we set out to investigate the absence of foundation as a crossroads in contemporary philosophy and to evaluate the new contribution of Piovani’s reflection. In our study, we analysed mainly the works of the past twenty years and especially Principi di una filosofia della morale (1972) and Oggettivazione etica e assenzialismo(1980). The basic option in Piovani’s thinking is that, given the finite nature of the individual, as the willing who was not self-willed, man no longer needs any foundation. In fact, the contemporary individual is more unfounded than ever, having to constantly base himself on and interact with a reality that is ever changing. Piovani reaches the height of his critical foundation by stating that, forced to stabilise his own instability, man must base his existence on an absence. Here, Piovani, through the "non self-willed willing", eradicates the assumptions of modern thought, and captures the beginning of existence in the experience of limitation and finiteness. Man, who is based on de-ontology, on de-esse, is a sign of a dissatisfaction that asks to be satisfied, of an inadequacy. This study highlights how Piovani’s thinking, having abandoned the perspectives of Western ontology, proposes a new reflection on the positivity of the inadequate where absence is heralded as the greatest energy force of life. Philosophy, therefore, has a future only as negative philosophy
